It is now well-established that the teacher holds the key to success in education, specially in science education. It is only in countries (such as Finland and South Korea) where the teacher has been accorded prime importance that there has been real success in science education. Money seems to be the less important factor.
The programme envisaged is to provide opportunities and training to teachers in science education. Various aspects that will be covered in the proposed programme would be subject content, teaching methodology in science, laboratory experiments, research experience and experience in education technology. The training will be provided through projects and one or two formal courses.

Persons with the following backgrounds could be considered for such a programme.

Those who are already teachers and who have a Bachelor's degree in Education. They will be required to take only one or two courses in the relevant subject such as chemistry, physics or biology and carry out projects on laboratory experiments, as education technology as well as research.
Teachers who do not have a Bachelor's degree in Education, but have a Bachelor's or Master's degree in science: They would be given a course in education philosophy and related aspects in addition to one or two courses in the relevant subject. They will also carry out the projects mentioned earlier in (a)
Young people who are not teachers and would like to take up teaching as a profession: They would be given the same training as the teachers without B.Ed mentioned in (b) above.

The programme will be for one year (for full – time students), at the end of which they will be given a Post- graduate Diploma in Science Education. The programme will take 2.0 years for teachers who do this on a part – time basis.
