CALL FOR AWARD OF RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS

The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS), Mumbai, in partnership with The Kusuma Trust (UK) and The Kusuma Foundation (India) invite applications from Indian citizens currently working in the social/education and development sectors for award of five (5) research fellowships during 2013-14.

About IIPS and the Kusuma Foundation Research Fellowships
The International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) situated at Deonar, Mumbai, was established in 1956 by the United Nations and Government of India as a demographic training centre for Asia and the Pacific Region. In 1985 the UGC accorded the Deemed University status to the Institute. Currently, the Institute runs three masters courses (two in Population Studies – another in distance learning mode, and one in Bio-Statistics & Epidemiology) and research degrees (M.Phil and Ph.D). The Institute has a unique standing as the only university in the world solely dedicated to population sciences. With well-qualified faculty drawn from various disciplines, the Institute has some exemplary research to its credit, including two very large-scale surveys, namely the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS) and District Level Household Surveys (DLHS) (both completed three rounds).

The Kusuma Foundation (India) is a registered non-profit company based in Delhi and part of the Kusuma Trust (UK), an independent, charitable grant making organization, with a mission to facilitate and increase access to education and other life opportunities.

The Foundation has recently signed a partnership agreement with IIPS to initiate a three-year Research Fellowship programme to promote research in education in India.

The main objective of the partnership is to train and impart research skills to young professionals and faculty working in NGOs and colleges who have the potential but not the opportunity, to conduct research on education issues of national importance and relevance to Kusuma’s strategic priorities. The fellowship should also enable the fellows to disseminate their findings at national and international forums.

The research fellowship will provide selected candidates with high-level research skills including knowledge of statistics, qualitative research and data analysis. Fellows will be trained in identifying, defining and justifying research problems and carrying out studies of national importance. The Fellowship will enable participants to carry out independent studies and publish in national and international peer reviewed journals.

The Fellowship
A fellowship amount of Rs. 150,000 (Rupees one lakh fifty thousand only) each for a period of one year will be awarded to five successful candidates. The fellowship has no separate contingent grant or fund earmarked for different items such as data collection, but it excludes tuition fees, travel, and accommodation expenses during training at IIPS, Mumbai. The fellowship amount will be disbursed during the tenure accordingly as the programme progressed.
The fellowship will consist of four training modules on research methodology, each with one week duration (five working days) at IIPS. The five selected fellows will attend a training module once every quarter. During the course of the trainings, fellows will identify and define an area of research relevant to secondary and higher education and employment in India, and then carry out the research over the course of the year.
Research will primarily focus on two districts, viz. Sambalpur (Orissa) and Hardoi (Uttar Pradesh), and the fellows will work on issues relevant to Kusuma’s strategic priorities.
The training modules have been prepared by experts in the field, keeping in mind the mission of the Foundation and the selected fellows.
Experienced mentors from IIPS will support fellows to carry out their research. Mentors will also guide Fellows in writing the papers and help them to publish their research in peer-reviewed journals. A dissemination workshop will be organised at the end of the Fellowship. The workshop will bring together different stakeholders involved in education to share key findings of the studies carried out by the IIPS-Kusuma Fellows.

All selected fellows will be required to sign a contract. The tenure of fellowship is one year. During the fellowship tenure, fellows need not take study leave but must compulsorily attend all the four one-week training modules at IIPS. Extension of fellowship tenure maybe entertained only in exceptional cases and at IIPS discretion.

The fellowship is scheduled for launched on November 18, 2013, and training for the first batch of successful fellows will be held during 18 – 22 November, 2013.

Eligibility Criteria:
Any person currently working in colleges or development sectors, preferably below 40 years, with at least 55% in Masters degree in Education, Social Sciences, Statistics, Mathematics, Demography and any other relevant discipline with prior experience in research or those currently involved in research and evaluation and want to upgrade their skills can apply. Preference maybe be given to candidates who are currently teaching or working in colleges/development sectors and possessing higher degrees such as MPhil and/or currently enrolled in PhD programme.
A panel of experts constituted by IIPS & Kusuma Foundation will select the candidates through written test and personal interviews to be conducted at IIPS, Mumbai, on 13 September, 2013.

The application process:
All Fellowship applications must be sent to IIPS, Mumbai, by the first week of September 2013. Only applications completed in all respects will be screened and called for test and personal interviews. Each application must have the following documents:

About Institute & Animal Biotechnology Centre
National Dairy Research Institute (Deemed University) is the premier organization that provides Research and Development support for dairy development programmes of the Nation. Over the years, it has gained prominence as the front ranking research organization on global basis. Animal Biotechnology Centre (ABTC) is one of the prestigious centre of the Institute. Activities on biotechnology research at NDRI were initiated during mid eighties under a UNDP 'Centre of Excellence Programme on Biotechnology’. In 1987, on recommendation of the National Task Force of the Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India, a National Project on Embryo Transfer Technology was initiated at NDRI which was also supported by ICAR/ USAID bilateral co-operation in its initial stages. At NDRI, more than 10 calves from a single cow in one calendar year have been produced using Embryo Transfer Technology. The in vitro fertilization (IVF) technique was successfully used to produce the world’s first IVF calf in buffalo. The IVF technique has also been used to produce the goat kids for the first time in India.
At present the centre has developed impressive facilities for research and teaching in the areas of high end embryo biotechniques like animal tissue culture, in vitroembryo production, somatic cell cloning and embryonic stem cell production, transgenic animal production, genome analysis, expression genomics and proteomics etc. World’s first clone buffalo calf was produced on Feb 6, 2009 by hand guided cloning technique using somatic cells as donor cell. Cloned calf Garima-II was produced on 22nd September 2010, using embryonic stem cell as donor cell. Recently Garima-II has delivered a normal female calf “MAHIMA” on January 25, 2013.

Stem cells
Stem cells are a special kind of cells which are capable of undergoing unlimited number of symmetrical mitotic cell divisions without differentiation; maintaining stable diploid karyotype; are clonogenic, which have the same properties as the original cell; are capable of either entering a path leading to a fully differentiated cell or remaining as stem cells. Embryonic Stem cell technology is expected to have immense importance for the production of cloned, transgenic farm animals, enable studies on gene targeting, fundamental events in embryonic developmental, germ cell production and production of therapeutic delivery systems. The research on stem cells is a new area and has enormous potential in animal sector for quality animal production. The present training aims at imparting hands on training on stem cell techniques.
