Workshop 3: Grounded Theory Method in Psychology

Resource Persons:Dr. Kumar Ravi Priya, Associate Professor of Psychology , Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur.

Grounded Theory Method (GTM) is, as per literature, the most frequently used qualitative research method in social science and Psychology. It is so not just due to the popular notions of ‘developing theory inductively grounded in data’ but its amenability to help scientifically develop insights about the experiences, perspectives and worldviews of various stakeholders in the context of social/political phenomena, health and mental health issues, organizational or institutional settings and the field of education. In Psychology , this methodology is being utilized predominantly in the areas of health psychology , clinical psychology and educational psychology (that are growing towards being interdisciplinary sciences) besides showing its constantly growing use in its most other sub-disciplines and the allied domains of management and nursing science. This one-day workshop can be of interest for the researchers in the field of psychology and allied social science who want to learn the scientific approach of: (a) locating GTM in the scientific paradigms of qualitative research methodology, (b) generating contextually ‘rich’ qualitative data, (c) analyzing qualitative data (coding and memo writing), and (d) establishing scientific rigour of the findings. The workshop also provides a first-hand experience of how the scientific approaches of GTM can be applied in various domains of psychology that adhere to diverse perspectives and paradigms and how, if research questions demand so, it may be supplemented with test construction and further quantitative analysis.
Dr. Kumar Ravi Priya has been serving as an associate professor of psychology at the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur since March, 2012. He joined IIT Kanpur as a faculty in 2006. Utilizing ethnography and grounded theory method in conducting and supervising research in the field of wellbeing and mental health among population at risk and disaster survivors, Dr. Priya has published in various national and international conference proceedings and numerous peer-reviewed journals of national and international repute.
