Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore-560 012 has invited applications for the 'Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana' (KVPY), a program started during 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas.

The program funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India is administered by IISc, Bangalore.

KVPY aims to identify and encourage talented students with aptitude for research and strives to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is developed for research and growth in the country.

Generous scholarship and contingency grant is provided up to the Pre-Ph.D. level to the selected students. In addition, summer programs for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

The Fellowships in the range of Rs. 4000/- to Rs. 7000/- p.m and contingency grants to the tune of 4 months fellowship p.a is offered to students studying in Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine and are only for Indian Nationals studying in India.

Eligibility:

Basic Sciences: There are four categories under Basic Sciences.

Stream SA: Applicant should be enrolled in Class XI (Science Subjects) during 2009-10 and should have secured minimum 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in Class X Board Examination.

Stream SB+2: Applicant should be enrolled in Class 12 (+2) during 2009-10 and aspiring to join Under Graduate programme in Basic Sciences (B.Sc / Integrated M.Sc) for the session 2010-11 and should have secured minimum 75% (65% for SC/ST) marks aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in Class X Board Examination.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in 1st year B. Sc / Integrated M.Sc. during 2009-10 and have secured minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects in Class XII Board Examination are eligible.

Stream SP (Basic Sciences): Students enrolled in Class XI/XII,  I/II year (B.Sc./Integrated M.Sc.) in Basic Sciences during 2009-10 and have secured minimum 60% (50% for SC/ST) marks in aggregate in Class X & XII Board Examinations are eligible to apply under this stream. Monthly Fellowship and Annual Contingency will be Rs. 4000/- and Rs. 16000 respectively for SA and SP (After Xth Class). SELECTION PROCEDURE:

Basic Sciences (SA and SB): Eligible applicants from Streams SA and SB will be called for a written aptitude test (multiple choice) to be conducted at different centers across the country on 1st November 2009 (Sunday). The details of the venue of the aptitude tests will be put on the KVPY website in October 2009. Final stage of selection will be the interview based on performance in the aptitude test.

SP (Basic Sciences); SP (Engineering) and SP (Medicine): Applicants short listed based on the project submitted will be called for an interview, which is the final stage of the selection procedure. The interview will be conducted either at IISc, Bangalore or IIT-Bombay, Mumbai or ICMR, New Delhi during the month of December 2009 or January 2010.

Those seeking admission to Part-time Ph. D Programme should possess the educational qualifications as needed for Full-time Integrated M. Phil-Ph D. programme, should currently be in full-time employment, should be a senior level educational functionary/administrator with a minimum of five years work experience in teaching, educational planning and administration.

The selection process includes initial short-listing of applications based on the relevance and quality of the brief write-up (in the prescribed format) in the proposed area of research to be submitted along with the application form.

ADVANCED TOOL MAKER'S COURSE (ATM):

Duration of the course is 2 years (4 Semesters). Applicant should have SSC/Metric with I.T.I. in any one of the trades - Tool & Die Maker / Fitter / Machinist/Turner. Upper age limit is 25 years (not born before 31.08.1984) with Relaxation up to 5 years for SC/ST Candidates. There are 30 seats for the course. Selection will be based on merit in the qualifying examination (10th Class & ITI with weightage in the ratio of 50-50 respectively). Course Fee is Rs. 12,000/- per year.

Cost of application form for PGTD/PDTD/DTDM courses is Rs.500/- for all categories and Rs.250/- for SC/ST. For ATM Course, it is Rs.200/- and Rs./100/- respectively. There is no Application fee for PWD category.

Admissions will be made through a Joint Entrance Test, 2009 to be held at Jodhpur, Jaipur, Udaipur, Ajmer, Bikaner, Kota, Sriganganagar, New Delhi & Lucknow on the 24th June, 2009 (Wednesday). The Examination Centres may also be located at Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Thiruvananthpuram, Kolkata, Mumbai, Bhopal and Guwahati. There will be two papers for the test. Each paper carrying 360 marks will have 120 objective type questions. First paper to be held from 8 am to 10 am will have 80 Questions from Physics in Section A and 40 Questions from Zoology in Section B. Paper 2 to be held from 11 am to 1 pm will have 80 questions from Chemistry (Section A) and 40 from Botany (Section B). Each correct answer will fetch 3 marks. For wrong answers, 1/2 mark shall be deducted. Merit position shall be determined on the basis of total marks obtained in both the papers.

Admissions for Ayurved course being run by the National Institute of Ayurveda, Jaipur and for the Homoeopathic & Unani Faculties will be made through Joint Entrance Test conducted at the National Level; for which the residents of all the States in India can apply for admissions. For admission to all the remaining Ayurved Colleges, bonafide Residents of Rajasthan may apply for the Joint Entrance Examination.
 
Applicant should complete 17 years of age on 31-12-09 and should have passed the 10+2 examination (Science Biology Group) of the Rajasthan Board of Secondary Education or equivalent there to. For admission to Ayurved & Unani Faculties, the candidate must have obtained at least 50% average marks in Physics, Chemistry & Biology. Those who have appeared this year at 10+2 examination with Science Biology may apply for admission subject to the submission of 10+2 mark sheet with requisite (50%) marks in Science- Biology Group as per the time schedule.

Indian Maritime University, East Coast Road, Uthandi, Chennai - 600 119, a Central University, has invited applications for admission to the  6-semester (3 year) B.Sc. Nautical Science programme with a minimum duration of 3 years and maximum duration of 6 years permissible to complete the programme.

The programme is constituted of three stages. A candidate is initially admitted for the one year (2 Semesters) Pre-sea course, which is designed to impart basic knowledge on the type of merchant ships, ship operations, types of goods carried by ships, shipping trade and a good foundation in the basic principles of navigation and environmental sciences. On completion, candidate will be awarded Diploma in Nautical Science (DNS). This Diploma programme is followed by one and half year (3 Semesters) on-board ship training.

On successful completion of the same; a candidate is awarded Advanced Diploma in Nautical Science (ADNS). The Sixth Semester constitutes 'Second Mate Certificate of Competency' awarded by the Director General of Shipping and simultaneous award of B.Sc. (Nautical Science) Degree from the University.

Eligibility for admission is a Pass in 10 + 2 examination from a recognized Board/University with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM), with not less than 55% marks in PCM aggregate OR With Physics as an individual subject in any one of the years of B.Sc., with not less than 50% marks in the final year of B.Sc., from a recognized University provided that the candidate must have passed 10 + 2 examination with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics (PCM) from a recognized Board OR B.E./B.Tech or its equivalent degree from I.I.T. or from a college recognized by AICTE/UGC/DEC.

Applicant should also have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as a separate subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/University.

Those appearing in eligibility educational qualification examination are also eligible to apply provided they meet all the eligibility criteria and produce the certificates to that effect. Those with three year Diploma from a recognized Polytechnic can also apply subject to the condition that their PCM aggregate in the Diploma programme shall not be less than 55%. Applicant should not be more than 25 years. The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates and 5 years for SC/ST candidates.

Applicant should be medically fit as per the standards set by Merchant Shipping Medical Examination Rules, 2000 as amended from time to time Eye-sight should be 6/6 in each eye without visual aids and should have Normal colour vision. Candidates will have to undergo a full eyesight test conducted by the Mercantile Marine Department (MMD) before being finally selected for the programme.

Admission to this programme is offered on the basis of qualifying in a written test. The Entrance Test is conducted twice a year. Candidates seeking admission can fall in two categories namely Sponsored and Non-Sponsored. Candidates can be sponsored for admission by employing shipping companies/their authorized manning agents registered with the DGS and hence fall under category of Sponsored candidates. The Non-Sponsored candidates are those candidates who do not get sponsorship for their admission in the programme but they later seek sponsorship for their on-board training after obtaining admission in the programme.

All candidates (sponsored or non-sponsored) have clear the entrance test to become eligible for admission. Non-sponsored candidates shall be required to attend Counselling session after clearing the written Examination.

The Entrance Test will be conducted at IMU. The Examination shall have 180 objective type multiple choice questions distributed in six parts which are to be attempted in 3 hours. A candidate will be assessed with 30 questions each form English, General Knowledge, Reasoning Aptitude, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. The standard of the Entrance Test will generally be that of 10+2 level.

This  course, strictly residential, leads to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after 6 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world.

Applicant must be Unmarried (male/female) Indian Citizens, with a pass in 10 + 2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, and at least 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard and should be 17 to 25 years as on 3rd  August 2009, relaxable for SC/ST as per government guidelines.
