Nirma
University:
Nirma
University was established in the year 2003 as a Statutory University under a
Special Act passed by the Gujarat State Legislative Assembly. The University
Grants Commission (UGC)
has
recognized Nirma University under Section 2(f) of UGC Act and the university is
also accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Nirma
University is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU)
and provisional member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). In
addition to the Institute of Science, the constituent institutes of the
University include Institute of Technology, Institute of Diploma Studies,
Institute of Management, Institute of Pharmacy and Institute of Law. The
115-acre green campus is serene with picturesque landscapes. Excellent hostel
and transport facilities are available along with bank, dining halls, canteen,
Yoga hall, Clinic, Gymnasium and Sports grounds on the campus.
Infrastructure
for research:
• Research
laboratories, a central instrumentation facility, plant growth area, animal cell culture facility, insectarium, animal house.
• Major
equipments include Thermal Cycler, Gradient PCRs, ELISA reader, CO 2 incubator,
Biosafety Cabinet, Plant growth chamber, UV-visible spectrophotometers, Gel
documentation system, Ultra sonicator, Biolog , Hybridization chamber, HPLC,
Fluorimeter, Denaturing Gradient Gel Electrophoresis,
Orbital shakers, Refrigerated centrifuges, -20 & -80 C Deep freezers,
Liquid Nitrogen storage facility; Compound-, Inverted-, and Dissection microscopes.

The Human Ethical Committee, Animal Ethical Committee, Biosafety committee, and
Research Advisory committee are in place for excellent monitoring of biological
research.
Research Areas:
• Maintenance of
memory T cells vis-Ã -vis vaccine development.
• Actinomycetes
and soil microbial diversity, Biotransformation of combined industrial effluent
microbes for bioremediation of hydrocarbons, Breach of Rhizobium legume
specificity, Molecular basis of MPS phenotype, Halophiles, Plant anti-microbials.
• Genetic
determinants of cancer and congenital disorders, Molecular marker of male
infertility, Glucose transporters in diabetes, Probiotics, Neurobiology of Epilepsy
and diabetes.
• Protein
stability, folding, misfolding and aggregation.
The Institute
has 8 core faculties with diverse expertise in biological sciences and all of
them are active researchers, of which six are recognized Ph.D. guides. Ph. D admission
is conducted as per UGC rule.
Special Feature:
In vivo studies
in animal models, plant models and insectarium.
Research Projects:
Completed 8
minor research projects funded by Nirma University and 2 minor research
projects funded by GUJCOST.

DBT (Dept. of Biotechnology), Govt. of India and 1 by GSBTM (Gujarat State
Biotechnology Mission), Govt. of Gujarat.
Publications:
Since
the start of our research program in 2007, 35 papers in international journals,
20 in national journals, 4 book chapters, and 10 books have been published.

current significance are offered as Special Elective Papers like; Genomics
& Proteomics, Industrial Microbiology & Fermentation Technology,
Reproductive Physiology, Human Genetics, Advanced Immunology, Vaccinology,
Bioprocess Engineering and Structural Biology.

coursework, seminar presentations, dissertation research projects and
Industry-interaction provide the students optimal opportunity to develop
scientific knowledge, skill, and aptitude for research.

computers, Internet, print & digital collection of 1890 books & 65
journals.

Instrumentation Rooms and dedicated research laboratories

classrooms equipped with audio-visual facility
More focus is
given on learning than teaching. The progress of student is assessed through
Continuous Evaluation.

Admission
Eligibility:
Bachelor's
degree in Chemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, BHMS, BAMS,
Physiotherapy, and others with minimum 50% marks and the selection will
be based on the merit of entrance test to be conducted by th the
Institute on 12 May, 2013 at Ahmedabad. If large number of students
are applying from other states, accordingly new centers may be created and announced.

The application
form with prospectus can be downloaded from our website www.nirmauni.ac.in (Around last week of February, 2013) and
the completed application can be submitted along with a Demand Draft of Rs.
1000/- in favour of “Institute of Science, Nirma University” payable at
Ahmedabad.
The
last date for submission of the completed application is 30th April, 2013.

Procedure
Number
of available seats are advertised twice a year in April and December
(Tentative). Selection will be made on the basis of Entrance Test (If the
number of applications is large), Presentation of Project proposal and
Interview.
Eligibility
Criteria
The
applicant holding Master’s Degree or equivalent in the concerned field with 55%
or equivalent grade is eligible. If the applicant has passed the qualifying
examination from University other than Nirma University, he/she will be
required to obtain eligibility certificate from Nirma University. The
arrangement for obtaining the same will be made on the spot on payment of Rs.
500/-.
