Admissions at IISERs
Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER) at Bhopal, Kolkata, Mohali, Pune and Thiruvananthapuram have notified the admissions to their 5 year BS-MS Dual Degree Programmes for 2011-12, with major in Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. IISER Kolkata offers major in Earth Sciences also. Admissions to IISERs are offered through three different channels or streams. The first stream is the ‘KVPY’.

Those selected under the ‘Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana’ (KVPY), a Programme of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, to encourage students of Basic Sciences, Engineering and Medicine to take up research careers in these areas, can apply through the KVPY stream. (Details of the Scheme are available at www.kvpy.org.in/main/. Applicants under this scheme should belong to SA(2009)/SX(2010)/SB(2010)/SP(Passed 10+2 in 2010/2011).

IISER application window for those applying under the KVPY stream will be open between 21st March and 23rd June 2011. Applicants may visit the link http://iiser-admissions.in/applykvpy.php and submit the online application as per the instructions given at the link.

The second stream of admission is the ‘IIT-JEE’ stream. Those who have a rank in regular merit list of IIT-JEE and have scored 60 % marks in class XII are eligible to apply under this scheme. Online Application for IIT JEE Stream commences on 9th June 2011 and closes on 23rd June 2011 at http://iiser-admissions.in/applyjee.php.

The third stream of admission is the ‘State/Central Board’ stream. Those who have completed Class XII in 2010 and Class X in 2008 as well as those completing Class XII in 2011 and have completed Class X in 2009, as per the Cut-off percentage of marks fixed for the INSPIRE Scholarship of DST, given at http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in/Inspire-Advertisement.pdf can apply under this stream. OBC (Non-creamy) applicants will get a 5% relaxation in the DST cut-off score. The cut-off for SC/ST applicants is 60% in Class X and Class XII for all Boards. Online Application for State & Central Boards commences 15th June 2011 and closes on 8th July 2011.

Those applying under the ‘State/Central Board’ stream must also qualify in the IISER Science Aptitude Test to be held on 16th July 2011. Applicant may choose an IISER of his/her choice for the Aptitude test, at the time of applying.

IISER aptitude test for State/Central Board stream will be based on Class 11th and 12th Standard syllabus in Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics on the pattern of CBSE syllabus. The Test will have a paper of 2 hours duration with equal weightage for Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. Sample questions are given at http://iiser-admissions.in/faq.php

A student may apply through one or more channels. However, separate application has to be submitted for each channel. Each IISER admits a total of 100 students. A maximum of 125 students each will be admitted under the KVPY and IIT-JEE Streams. The rest of the seats will be for the ‘State / Central Board Stream. IISER students are required to stay in campus hostels.

Reservation policy of Government of India will be followed for admission. Accordingly, 15% seats are reserved for SC; 7.5% for ST and 27% for OBC (Non-creamy). Reservation for the PD candidates will be 3% in each category.

Subject to satisfactory academic performance at IISER, all students admitted to IISERs are eligible for INSPIRE/KVPY Scholarship of Rs. 5000/- per month. Application fee for each admission channel is Rs. 500/- for General/OBC applicants and Rs. 250/- for SC/ST applicants.

As per the procedure for KVPY stream, on applying online, after submission of all the details asked, the applicant may ‘Preview’ the form and use edit button and revise/modify the Online Application Form entries, if needed. If satisfied, the applicant must click on the ‘Submit’ button on the preview screen. Subsequently, the applicant will get an ‘Application Number’ and the ‘Login Password’, to login to the admission website. [The candidate will have to use this Password for all subsequent access to the admission website. If the applicant forgets the password, he/she may go to the ‘Applicants Login’ page and click Forgot Password link. Password will be sent to the applicant by email].

The applicant will then be prompted to get a ‘Bank-Pay-in Slip’. This has to be printed and the fee paid with this slip at any branch of State Bank of India. Applicant should write down the Bank Branch Code and date of deposition on the pay-in-slip. An additional amount of Rs.50/- will be charged as bank commission. While accepting the application fee, the bank will give a Unique Journal Number on the pay-in-slip. Applicant must ensure that the bank official has entered the Unique Journal Number on the counter foil of the pay-in-slip.

After making the payment, the applicant must go to the ‘Applicants Login’ page where the applicant will have to provide the Application Number and the Password to login. He/She should then enter the Unique Journal Number given by the Bank on the pay-in-slip, Bank Branch Code and the date of deposition and ‘Submit’. The applicant will be prompted to get his/her completed application which may be printed on a good quality A4 size paper. The applicant must paste a recent good quality colour photo of size, 3.5 cm x 4.5 cm in the space provided in the printout. The candidate and his/her parent/guardian should sign at the bottom of the printed application. The printout along with the counter foil of bank pay-in-slip may be retained by the applicant and has to be brought for verification at the time of counseling.

Applicant can choose any one of the IISERs for counseling while applying. Only short-listed candidates will be called for counseling. A non-refundable fee of Rs. 1000/- for General/OBC applicants and Rs. 500/- for SC/ST will be the fee for counseling. Choice of IISER can be given based on the preference, at the time of counseling. Allotment will be made on the basis of the applicant's choice and rank. Allotment made to an IISER is final. No application for transfer to another IISER will be entertained.
