UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA Ph.D PROGRAMME IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING ADMISSIONS 2013-2014

NOTICE FOR THE ENTRANCE TEST FOR THE Ph.D PROGRAMME IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS, UNIVERSITY OF CALCUTTA

Applications, in the following prescribed format, are invited from candidates, willing to pursue Ph. D programme in the Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta. Subjects/fields/areas of the programme are mainly in the areas of Electrical Engineering and Instrumentation Engineering. However, if a candidate wishes to apply for admission to the programme from any interdisciplinary field, a part of which either falls in the area of Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering, he / she will have to attach a separate application in this regard with his/her application form addressed to the Head of the Department for consideration.

Eligibility Criteria : The following candidates are eligible to apply
i) Candidates having minimum 66% of total marks or equivalent grade in Post B.Sc- B.Tech/ B. Tech/ BE or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering as per CU Ph.D rules-2009. They should also have at least 60% of total marks or equivalent grade marks all through their academic career starting from Madhyamik or equivalent Examination. Such candidates will have to sit for the Ph.D. Programme Entrance Test.
ii) Candidates with 66% of total marks or equivalent grade in M.Tech/ME degree in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering or allied subjects, from any AICTE recognized Institute, along with the criteria of above paragraph (i) will be exempted from the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Department.

iii) Candidates having 1
st class M.Sc degree in Electronics or Computer Science and who have cleared UGC / CSIR(JRF) examinations/ NET /GATE /SET/ SLET/ Teacher Fellowship or have passed equivalent examinations are exempted from the Entrance Test, otherwise they have to sit for the Entrance Test.
iv) If a candidate does not satisfy the minimum requirements regarding marks in any one of the examinations (Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, B.Sc, B. Tech., M.Sc, M. Tech.) as mentioned in items (i) and (ii) above, but possesses at least 50% marks in that examination, he/she may be allowed to apply provided he/she has already published one or more technical paper(s) in national / international journal(s) with impact factor. Such cases will be placed before the DC for detailed scrutiny to consider the eligibility of the candidate for appearing at the examination and or interview as the case may be. The decision of the Departmental Committee in such cases will be final.
v) Candidate having B.Tech and M.Tech degree other than Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering or the Candidate having M.Sc degree in Electronics or Computer Science will have to attach a separate application seeking permission with his/her application form addressed to the Head of the Department for consideration. Such cases will be placed before the DC for detailed scrutiny to consider the eligibility of the candidate for appearing at the examination and or interview as the case may be. The decision of the Departmental Committee in such cases will be final.
All candidates, including candidates clearing the Entrance Test, will have to appear in an interview to be conducted by the Department. A candidate qualifying in the interview will be provisionally selected for the Ph.D programme and shall be required to enroll as a probationary Ph.D. student on payment of a non-refundable fee determined by the University

Enrollment to registration :
A probationary PhD student will be required to complete his / her PhD registration within two years from the date of his / her enrollment, failing which his / her admission in the PhD programme shall automatically stand cancelled.
Each Ph.D. student, while carrying on his/her research during the tenure of his/her registration, shall be required to undertake a course work for a minimum period of one semester (six months).
In addition, candidates mentioned in item no.(i), after being provisionally admitted to the Ph.D programme, will also have to qualify in some other criteria as per CU norms before being registered as a Ph.D candidate.
For further detailed information, applicants may go through University of Calcutta (Regulation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D), Regulations 2009, in the University website.
 The Ph.D. entrance test will be of Multiple Choice Question type and Short answer question type. The examination will be of 1 (one) hour duration.
 The questions of the Entrance Test will, in general, cover topics of Electrical Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, basics of Physics, Electronics and Computer Science , circuit theory and Engineering mathematics.
 At the most 20 candidates (in concurrence with the reservation policy) will be enrolled in the year 2013.
 For Scheduled Caste , Scheduled Tribe and Physically Handicapped candidates reservation rules of Calcutta University applies.
