Prathibha Scholarship for Students with Talent and Aptitude for Research in Science (STARS)


Kerala State Council for Science, Technology & Environment (KSCSTE), has invited applications for the award of Prathibha Scholarship for 2014-15.

Prathibha Scholarship is a merit scholarship scheme for identifying ‘Students with Talent and Aptitude for Research in Science (STARS)’, implemented by the KSCSTE, for attracting students to study Science and pursue a career in Science Research and is offered to students who have qualified meritoriously in the Higher Secondary Examination in Science subjects and are pursuing Degree course in Basic/Natural sciences.

Applicant should be of Indian Origin and should have passed Higher Secondary Examination in any of the Boards like State Board/CBSE/CISCE from Kerala, securing at least 90% marks or equivalent grade in Higher Secondary Examination. Applicant should be enrolled for B.Sc./Integrated M.Sc. Degree course in any University/recognised Institution in India. Applicant should have qualified in Higher Secondary Examination in the same year of application for the scholarship.

The Prathibha scholarship is awarded for three years of study of the Degree course or the first three years of study of the integrated M.Sc. course. Each selected student will be awarded a Scholarship of Rs.12000/- for the 1st year, Rs.18000/- for 2nd year & Rs.24,000/- for 3rd year of the BSc. /Integrated M.Sc. Degree Course.

The scholarship could be continued for M.Sc. course or subsequent years of integrated M.Sc. course subject to the condition that the student scores aggregate of 75% marks or equivalent grade for the degree course or first three years of integrated M.Sc. course, in which case they would receive Rs 40, 000/- for M.Sc 1st year/4th year of Integrated M.Sc., and Rs 60, 000/- for the 2nd year M.Sc./5th year Integrated M.Sc.

The scholarship will be released initially for the first year only; but it is renewable in the subsequent years of the course subject to successful completion of the previous year’s examination with not less than 60 % marks in aggregate or equivalent grade.
The total number of scholarships awarded in a year will be 100. These scholarships will be distributed among different Boards of Examination such as State Board, CBSE and CISCE (Class XII), in proportion to the number of eligible applicants in the respective Boards of examination from Kerala.

To ensure adequate opportunities to girl students, a minimum of 50% of the total scholarships is set-aside for them. 10% of the scholarships are reserved SC/ST applicants.

Those who are in receipt of any other scholarships are not eligible to apply for Prathibha Scholarship. However, SC/ST students who are receiving lump-sum grant are exempted from this criterion. Further, the awardees under this scheme of scholarship will not be allowed to receive any other scholarship during the tenure of receipt of Prathibha Scholarship. In case the Prathibha scholar desires to avail any other scholarship after receipt of the Prathibha scholarship, the Prathibha scholarship amount received by them should be refunded with immediate effect from the date of avail of the other scholarship.

The scholarship is awarded as per ranking based on the marks secured in Higher Secondary Examination for all science subjects. In case of tie in the total marks for science subjects, ranking is made based on the marks obtained for the subjects selected (Main) for the degree course. Further, tie if any is resolved by considering the order of marks scored in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics respectively.

The Course of study should be continuous and no break is allowed in between. In the event of discontinuance of the course by the student, the matter may be informed to KSCSTE through an application signed by the student and forwarded by the Head of the institution, within 15 working days of discontinuation of the course. Applications without necessary certificates and not forwarded by the Head of Institution will be rejected.

The Notification, Guidelines, Terms & Conditions, Application form etc are available in this link.

The duly filled application should be accompanied by the following documents.
(i)            Age proof of the applicant
(ii)           Attested copies of HSE certificate / Mark list
(iii)          Community certificate for SC/ST applicants
(iv)         Certificate in proof of place of origin (Attested copies of any one of S.S.L.C, Birth certificate or Nativity certificate could be considered for this purpose)
Application duly filled in along with the required enclosures should be forwarded by the Head of Institution where the candidate is undergoing the degree course, to reach ‘The Head, Women Scientist Division, Sasthra Bhavan, Pattom (P.O), Thiruvananthapuram - 695 004’, latest by 30th September 2014.
On publication of selection list by the KSCSTE, the selected Prathibha Scholars should submit the following documents for disbursement of scholarship.
(i)            ‘Terms and Conditions’ printed in stamp paper worth Rs. 50/-, duly signed and forwarded by the Head of the Institution where the student is undergoing Degree course
(ii)           Status Verification Certificate- duly signed
(iii)          Advance receipt in prescribed format, duly signed by the student

The scholarship renewal request for subsequent years should be forwarded to KSCSTE in the prescribed format with the necessary enclosures.Separate application is to be submitted for availing renewal of scholarship and the same is also available at this link at http://www.kscste.kerala.gov.in  

Prathibha scholars who qualify the eligibility norms for continuation of scholarship for M.Sc. /4th year of Integrated M.Sc. course should submit fresh application.

For renewal of scholarships, applicable for 2nd and 3rd year BSc, 2nd year MSc/ 5th year Integrated MSc Courses, Application for Scholarship Renewal is to be submitted in the prescribed format. It should be accompanied by copies of mark list of previous year’s examination (in case of semesters, mark list of two semesters in the previous year may be attached), Status Verification Certificate -duly signed, Terms and Condition – duly signed and Advance receipt in prescribed format duly signed by the student.

Introduction:
The prestigious Science Literature Award (SLA) is an annual award presented in the respective fields for the significant contributions of an individual for the promotion of Science literature in Malayalam.

This Award instituted by KSCSTE will be effective from 2003 onwards. Hence, this shall be irrespective of any similar awards instituted by erstwhile STEC.

In order to encourage more entries and to promote Science writers in Malayalam, KSCSTE has decided that once the Science Literature Award is given under any of the categories, the recipient authors are eligible to apply again for the Award only after completion of 5 years on receipt of the Award from KSCSTE.

Last Date for receiving the Application/Nomination is :  30-June 2014

General Guidelines

Terms and Conditions for the Science Literature Award for the year 2013

1. The Science Literature Awards for the year 2013 are entitled for the works published during the calendar year 2013, under the following categories:

i. Science Literature Award for Science Book (Children Literature)
ii. Science Literature Award for Science Book (Popular Science)
iii. Science Literature Award for Science Book (In-depth Science)
iv. Science Journalism Award.

2. Each Award carries a cash prize, a plaque and certificate.

3. Eligible authors may be nominated by the heads of organizations concerned. Institutions can nominate the candidates for the Award. Applications directly submitted
by the candidates are also accepted.

4. The applicant should apply only in the prescribed format for the Science Literature Award, specifying the Category for which applied or nominated by the Head of an Organization/ Institution. One can apply for more than one category also. However, in such cases, separate applications are to be submitted for each category.

5. Three copies of Books/ publications; detailed Bio-data and supporting testimonials (if any) must be submitted along with the application.

6. The Award is given for own independent work and no other work like translation of any book/article in part or in full shall be considered for the Award.
 7. Text books selected for curriculum on any subject for any course shall not be considered for the Award.

8. No abridgement of any book/ volume shall be considered for the Award.

9. The Award will be declared by KSCSTE after strict evaluation and the result will be announced in the leading dailies and will be published in the official website of the Council.

10. Official communication will be sent to the Award winners only.

11. The prestigious Science Literature Awards will be presented in a befitting function organized by KSCSTE, with due intimation to the Award winners and with press release.

12. The decision of KSCSTE on the Awards shall be final. KSCSTE reserves the right to  withdraw/ cancel the Award in full/ part at any point of time, without assigning any  reason whatsoever.

13. If no work is found suitable or no applications are received in any of the categories,  KSCSTE reserves the right to withdraw or cancel the Award for the particular category.

14. The terms and conditions are subject to change as per KSCSTE norms, at any time.

15. The duly filled up application in the prescribed format, along with 3 copies of Publications, detailed bio-data and copies of testimonials supporting their literary contributions should reach the office of the Member Secretary, Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, Sasthra Bhavan, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram-695004 on or before 5.00 pm on 30th  June 2014. Applications received after the due date will be summarily rejected.
