Online MSc International Environmental Management 2012
Universities of Madras and Northampton have invited applications for admission to Online Masters degree programme in Environmental Management commencing in March 2012. The Masters programme is supported by the Higher Education strand of the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI).

The eligibility requirement is a good Honors / Bachelor degree from a recognized Institution of Higher Education / University.
Preference will be given to the relevant professional experience. The qualifying degree will normally be in a recognized environmental science discipline such as physical geography, biology, environmental chemistry, geology, engineering or a related area. Those with degree in other social science subjects including law will also be considered, according to the interests and background of the candidate. Competence in English, computer and internet access are required.

The University is offering M.Sc.,(Geoinformatics) degree course under Private Study (Semester) during the academic year 2011-2012 in the Department of Geography.
1. Introduction
An Intensive Two-Year M.Sc Geoinformatics (Private study) at the Department of Geography, University of Madras is designed to provide the candidates a sound knowledge in the field of Geospatial technology for effective use of Geoinformatics in sustainable resource development planning. The course is designed for management level training for duration of two years. Upon completion of the course, participants should be able to contribute to the design, implementation and management of geoinformation production systems and quality control systems.
2. Objectives
The main objective is to provide a comprehensive training in theory and practice in the field of Geoinformatics at the level of supervisors. After the completion of the Degree, the graduate should be capable of performing competently the routine tasks in the field of geoinformatics and capacity to supervise technicians in the routine tasks and relate to professionals in the planning and execution of Geoinformatics projects.
3. Main Target Groups
The course is mainly intended for those who are involved in the operational use of integrated Geoinformation production and management in:
· National survey and mapping organisations, International organisations, United Nations etc
· Application oriented organizations (cadastre, local authorities, utilities companies, natural resources surveys, environment, private geoinformation production organizations),
· Private sector,(examples: Information technology industry, GIS consulting firms, Environmental management agencies, Tourist industry, Utility companies, E-commerce, Mineral exploration
· Emergency services, Public health and epidemiology, Planning and urban development, Crime mapping, Transportation and infrastructure
· And many more
4. Eligibility for Admission
A Candidate who has passed BA/BSc Degree Examination with Geography / Geology /Physics/ Environmental Sciences / Computer Science / Computer Applications/Information Technology/ Agriculture/Remote Sensing as the main subject of study or Geography as one of the subjects of study with knowledge of mathematics / statistics at least at the +2 level or BE Civil Engineering or any Information Technology related fields or an examination of any other University accepted by the syndicate as equivalent thereto.
Candidates with degrees in other subject areas will be considered if they can demonstrate interest, aptitude and experience in a field relevant to the application of geospatial technology.
5. Duration of the Course
The duration of the course is for two academic years consisting of FOUR semesters.
6. Medium of Instruction: English
7. Nature of the Programme
The Course is a combination of lectures, demonstrations, seminars, practical and project workshops offered under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS). The course will be offered under Private Study at the Department of Geography, University of Madras.
8. Cost of the Programme and student Strength Course Fee is Rs.50, 000/- (Fifty thousand only) for two years. Fees should be paid at the time of
admission. Payment shall be made in two instalments (First year: 25,000, Second year: 25,000). Maximum student strength will be 50.
9. Compulsory Intensive Contact Classes and Orientation
Ten days of practical sessions including lectures and seminars will be conducted at the Department of Geography, University of Madras for each semester and the attendance is compulsory and a minimum of 80 percent of attendance to be gained by each candidate. For the examination purposes, the record works completed and duly signed at the intensive practical training along will be considered for examination. All practical exercises will be recorded in A4 size sheets and submitted for evaluation.
10. Project Work
The M.Sc project is an extended piece of work carried out largely independently. At the end of the third semester, the title of the project work will be decided and approved for each candidate. A faculty member will be assigned as advisor. The topic for research project work within the fields of cartography, geographic information science, spatial planning, photogrammetric mapping, settlement studies, remote sensing, etc. will be selected by the student in consultation with the advisor. Students are encouraged to carry out projects in collaboration with industry, or in support of research projects in the Department of Geography/ Government departments/UN agencies.At the end of the project, students will have to present a seminar. The project report shall be submitted by the candidate before the commencement of the Second Year Examinations. Viva will be conducted at the Department of Geography, University of Madras, Chennai.
11. Eligibility for the Award of Degree
A candidate shall be declared to have passed the examination if he/she obtains not less than 50 percent of the marks in each paper / practical / project. The candidate who does not obtain the required minimum marks for a pass in a paper(s) / practical / project shall be required to appear for and pass the same at a subsequent appearance. A candidate shall be eligible for the award of the degree only if he/she has undergone the full course of study for a period of not less than two academic years and pass the examinations in all the four semesters and earn the prescribed 91 credits.
All courses are standardised and the Credits for each course are in accordance with the hours of learning process, which includes lectures, labs or project work or presentation in the form of report or / record The subjects listed under each semester are compulsory courses in each semester.
12. Examination
Examinations will be conducted at the end of each semester. Those candidates who have attended the intensive practical training only will be eligible to appear for theory examination. The candidates who pass all the examination prescribed for the course in the first appearance only are eligible for ranking.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES
1. Candidates shall read the Prospectus carefully before filling in the application and preserve the prospectus till the completion of the programme.
2. The candidates has to detach and fill in the following:
(i)Application form (ii) Computer Coding sheet (iii) Address slip
3. Application for add-on Post Graduate Diploma Programmes shall be submitted to the department concerned after admission to Post Graduate programme.
4. Applications must be complete in all respects. Incomplete Applications will be rejected without any intimation.
5. Separate application forms (at a cost of Rs.300/-) shall be submitted for each Programme (including Regular and Self-supportive programme) offered by the different Schools. Applications cannot be transferred from one School to another.
6. Foreign Nationals including NRIs with valid Passports and Visa issued by the Government of India and Refugees will be considered for admission subject to the conditions prescribed by the Government, their eligibility of schooling and qualifying examinations passed.
7. 15% supernumerary seats are available for all the PG courses (Regular programmes only) for Foreign Nationals including NRIs. They need not appear for Entrance Test.
8. The filled-in Application shall be sent directly to the Registrar, University of Madras, Tholkapiar Valagam (Chepauk) on or before 05.05.2011.
9. Attested copies of mark statements of the qualifying examination shall be sent along with the filled-in application form. However, the applicants who will appear for the final semester examinations during April/May 2011 shall send the application form along with the attested mark statements up to Five Semesters.
The final semester mark statement shall be sent within 7 days after the publication of results of U.G./P.G. Examinations of the Madras University.
10. The candidates who have passed their qualifying examination from other Universities shall obtain the eligibility certificate from the University of Madras and submit the same at the time of admission to the Course of study.
11. To obtain the eligibility Certificate, candidates are directed to contact the University Information Centre (Enquiry Office) /ERC Section of this University.
12. Entrance Examination will be conducted by the respective Departments / Schools and Hall ticket will be sent to the students by the Departments concerned.(List of courses for which Entrance examinations are conducted and list of courses for which admissions are made based on the qualifying examinations are provided elsewhere in this brochure)
13. Admissions to Masters/M.Phil. programmes are based on the marks obtained in the Basic qualifying Examinations 50% and the Entrance Examination 50% of marks.
14. Admission to M.B.A. (Regular and Self-supportive) and M.C.A. courses are based on the marks obtained in the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) conducted by the Anna University. Besides, 15% Supernumerary seats are available for M.B.A.
Self-supportive course for the candidates sponsored by the Public/Private sector at a separate fee.
15. Attach a Rs.20/- stamped self addressed 24x12 cm envelope along with filled-in application.
16. University is not responsible for any postal delay or loss in transit.
17. Number of seats are limited to each department offering the courses and selections are made following communal roster prescribed by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu.
18. Candidates from other States (except SC/ST) will be considered for selection under General Turn only.
19. Relaxation upto 5% of marks is considered to SC/ST/Physically and visually Challenged candidates for admission to M.Phil. programmes. Differently abled candidates shall enclose a certificate issued by the Department of Rehabilitation, Government of Tamil Nadu, in proof of evidence.
20. University reserves the right not to conduct any of the courses if the circumstances so warrant.
21 The MBA/MCA application forms shall reach the office 7 days of release of TANCET result by the Anna University along with a copy of the TANCET Marks obtained from Internet.

23. If there is any dispute regarding P.G./M.Phil./P.G. Diploma/Diploma/Certificate courses admission, the matter needs to be resolved only in the High Court of Madras, Chennai.
24. Last date for submission of filled in Application for all P.G. and M.Phil. Programmes (except MBA & MCA) is 05-05-2011.
25. Filled in application form with enclosures together with the Computer coding sheets should be submitted to the office of the Registrar, University of Madras, Tholkapiar Valagam Chepauk, Chennai – 600 005. Original Certificates need not be sent along with filled-in application.
