FOR THE ENTRANCE TEST FOR THE Ph.D PROGRAMME IN ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING AND
INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING IN THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED PHYSICS, UNIVERSITY OF
CALCUTTA
Applications,
in the following prescribed format, are invited from candidates, willing to
pursue Ph. D programme in the Department of Applied Physics, University of Calcutta.
Subjects/fields/areas of the programme are mainly in the areas of Electrical Engineering
and Instrumentation Engineering. However, if a candidate wishes to apply for
admission to the programme from any interdisciplinary field, a part of which
either falls in the area of Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation
Engineering, he / she will have to attach a separate application in this regard
with his/her application form addressed to the Head of the Department for
consideration.
•
Eligibility Criteria : The following
candidates are eligible to apply
i)
Candidates having minimum 66% of total marks or equivalent grade in Post B.Sc-
B.Tech/ B. Tech/ BE or equivalent degree in Electrical Engineering or Instrumentation
Engineering as per CU Ph.D rules-2009. They should also have at least 60% of
total marks or equivalent grade marks all through their academic career
starting from Madhyamik or equivalent Examination. Such candidates will have to
sit for the Ph.D. Programme Entrance Test.
ii)
Candidates with 66% of total marks or equivalent grade in M.Tech/ME degree in Electrical
Engineering or Instrumentation Engineering or allied subjects, from any AICTE
recognized Institute, along with the criteria of above paragraph (i) will be
exempted from the Entrance Test to be conducted by the Department.
iii)
Candidates having 1
st
class M.Sc degree in Electronics or Computer Science and who have cleared UGC /
CSIR(JRF) examinations/ NET /GATE /SET/ SLET/ Teacher Fellowship or have passed
equivalent examinations are exempted from the Entrance Test, otherwise they
have to sit for the Entrance Test.
iv)
If a candidate does not satisfy the minimum requirements regarding marks in any
one of the examinations (Madhyamik, Higher Secondary, B.Sc, B. Tech., M.Sc, M.
Tech.) as mentioned in items (i) and (ii) above, but possesses at least 50%
marks in that examination, he/she may be allowed to apply provided he/she has
already published one or more technical paper(s) in national / international journal(s)
with impact factor. Such cases will be placed before the DC for detailed
scrutiny to consider the eligibility of the candidate for appearing at the examination
and or interview as the case may be. The decision of the Departmental Committee
in such cases will be final.
v)
Candidate having B.Tech and M.Tech degree other than Electrical Engineering or
Instrumentation Engineering or the Candidate having M.Sc degree in Electronics
or Computer Science will have to attach a separate application seeking
permission with his/her application form addressed to the Head of the Department
for consideration. Such cases will be placed before the DC for detailed scrutiny
to consider the eligibility of the candidate for appearing at the examination
and or interview as the case may be. The decision of the Departmental Committee
in such cases will be final.
All
candidates, including candidates clearing the Entrance Test, will have to appear
in an interview to be conducted by the Department. A candidate qualifying in
the interview will be provisionally selected for the Ph.D programme and shall
be required to enroll as a probationary Ph.D. student on payment of a
non-refundable fee determined by the University
Enrollment to
registration :
A
probationary PhD student will be required to complete his / her PhD registration
within two years from the date of his / her enrollment, failing which his / her
admission in the PhD programme shall automatically stand cancelled.
Each
Ph.D. student, while carrying on his/her research during the tenure of his/her registration,
shall be required to undertake a course work for a minimum period of one semester
(six months).
In
addition, candidates mentioned in item no.(i), after being provisionally admitted
to the Ph.D programme, will also have to qualify in some other criteria as per CU
norms before being registered as a Ph.D candidate.
For
further detailed information, applicants may go through University of Calcutta
(Regulation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Ph.D), Regulations 2009, in
the University website.
The Ph.D. entrance test will be of Multiple Choice Question type and Short answer
question type. The examination will be of 1 (one) hour duration.
The questions of the Entrance Test will, in general, cover topics of Electrical
Engineering, Instrumentation Engineering, basics of Physics, Electronics and Computer
Science , circuit theory and Engineering mathematics.
At the most 20 candidates (in concurrence with the reservation policy) will be enrolled
in the year 2013.
For Scheduled Caste , Scheduled Tribe and Physically Handicapped candidates reservation
rules of Calcutta University applies.

Procedure:
1.
The conditions for eligibility will be guided overall by the rules specified in
the notification no. QCSR/34/06 regarding Regulations for the Degree of Doctor
of Philosophy (Ph.D.) of the University of Calcutta
2.
Eligibility: Candidates with an M.Sc. or equivalent degree in Statistics and
allied subjects from any UGC recognized University/Institute are eligible to
apply for admission in the Ph.D. programme.
3.
The admission procedure consists of a written test followed by an interview for
candidates successful in the same. Those who have qualified NET / SET
(Mathematical Sciences) / GATE (Mathematics) or hold a UGC Teachers’ Fellowship
or already obtained M.Phil. in Statistics and allied subjects or M. Tech.
(QR&OR) degree of ISI prior to the application deadline will be exempted
from the written examination but will have to appear in the interview.
4.
Reservation policy will be followed as per rules.
5.
Future announcements will be available on the Departmental Notice Board.
Structure of the
written examination:
1.
There will be 25 multiple choice questions each carrying 2.5 marks out of which
one has to answer 20 questions. If a candidate answers more than 20, only the
first 20 answered will be evaluated.
2.
There will be 15 short answer type questions of 5 marks each out of which one
has to answer 10 questions. If a candidate attempts more than 10, only the
first 10 attempted will be evaluated.
3.
Pass marks for the test will be announced in due course.
4.
Candidates successful in the written examination would have to compete with
other eligible candidates who have already cleared NET / SET / GATE / M. Phil /
M. Tech. (QR&OR) at the interview stage. The list of finally selected
candidates would be posted in the University website and Departmental Notice
Board.
5.
Candidates selected for the final interview will be required to specify his/her
areas of interest by a specified date before the interview. However, the
selection committee may, at its discretion, require a candidate to opt for a
topic/area other than his/her initial choice before admitting him/her into the
Ph.D. programme. The final date for submitting the brief will be announced
along with the intimation for the interview.

are invited from eligible candidates with at least 50% marks in
M.A./M.Sc./M.Com. along with Honours at the Degree level & with at least
55% marks in the B.Ed. degree in prescribed form obtainable from the University
Sales Counter on payment of Rs.100/- for General category & Rs. 50/- for
the candidates belonging to SC/ST& DA categories for admission to the
Master of Education Course in the i) Department of Education, C.U.(no. of seats
-35), Alipore Campus,1 Reformatory Street, Kolkata-700027; ii) David Hare
Training College(no. of seats -35) ,25/3,Ballygunge Circular
Road,Kolkata-700019; iii) Institute of Education for Women, Hastings House (no.
of seats-35, for female candidates only) 20B, Judges Court Road, Alipur,
Kolkata -700027 . The candidates employed on full time basis must apply through
proper channel and furnish a no objection certificate from their employer at
the time of submission of Application forms. Self-attested copies of Mark-Sheets

Total intake capacity comprising the above mentioned 3(three) Institutions is
105.Out of the total seats 50% will be reserved for the deputed teachers and
the rest 50% will be reserved for fresher candidates. All fresher (C.U &
non-C.U.) candidates will appear for the admission test. Selection will be made
strictly in order of merit and subject quota for 60% of seats for C.U.
candidates and also for rest 40% of seats for C.U. and non- C.U. candidates the
same procedure will be followed. The admission will follow the subject quota as
approved like (i) Social Science and Accountancy-40% (ii) Science and
Mathematics-40% (iii) Language-20%.
Admission
test procedure: The students will be admitted on the basis of MCQ test, where
the questions will appear from the three core papers of B.Ed. Syllabus,2012 of
University of Calcutta, on OMR sheet with 50 questions carrying 2 marks,
adhering to the standardized format of MCQ of the University. For each correct
answer 2 marks, for wrong answer minus 0.5 marks, and for not attempted 0
(Zero) marks will be awarded. If there is a tie of marks obtained in the
written entrance test amongst the candidates then the candidates with less
negative marking will be placed in higher position in the merit list than the
other candidate.
Scheduled
Caste/ Scheduled Tribe applicants from the other States will not get the
reservation facility of SC/ST.
Age
limit: 40 years as on 30.6.2013 for fresher candidates and 55 years as on
30.6.2013 for candidates employed in Secondary/Higher Secondary Schools,
Colleges, Govt. and Semi Govt. organizations. There is a relaxation of age for
maximum of 5(five) years for students belonging to Scheduled Caste, Schedule
Tribe and Differently Abled categories.
