Higher Education Scholarships


Ministry of Science and Technology, Department of Science and Technology has invited applications for `Scholarship for Higher Education (SHE)’, a component of the ‘Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research’ (INSPIRE) Programme, launched by Government of India with the objective of strengthening the National Science and Technology base and being implemented by Department of Science and Technology. The Scholarship for Higher Education focuses on attraction of talent to study Natural/Basic Sciences at Bachelor & Master’s level.

A total of 10,000 scholarships are available annually under SHE from April 2008. The scholarships are available only to those studying B.Sc, B.Sc (Hons) and Integrated M.Sc/MS Programmes in any recognized institution in India in Natural/Basic Sciences. The scheme as of now does not include courses in Engineering, Medicine, Technology and other Professional/Applied Science courses.

Each selected candidate will receive annually, a scholarship worth Rs.80,000/- in value. It will include Rs.60,000/- per annum in cash and a summer time attachment fee of Rs.20,000/- to be paid to the mentoring institution for undertaking summer time project.

Selected candidates will be supported for a maximum period of five years starting from the first year of B.Sc/B.Sc. (Hons)/Integrated course leading to M.S or M.Sc, or the completion of the course, whichever is earlier. Continuation of the scholarship for selected candidates will be based on performance in the examinations conducted and certified by the institution imparting education.

Students who happen to be among the top 1% in 12th Standard at their respective Board Examinations and are pursuing courses in Natural and Basic sciences at the B.Sc. or Integrated M.Sc. levels are eligible to apply.

The cut- off marks for this for different Boards for the years 2008, 2009 and 2010 are as follows.

Student who passed Class XII Board Examination in 2011 and are in receipt of Eligibility Certificate/ Note issued by the respective Board are also eligible to apply. Students who have secured top 10,000 ranks in the Joint Entrance Examination of IIT, AIEEE or AIPMT and who are studying for the identified courses in Natural/Basic sciences in any academic institute or university are eligible to apply for scholarship.

Those admitted to 5 years Integrated M.Sc. programs in Basic & Natural Sciences at all Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), those admitted to Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Basic Sciences (DAE-CBS) at the University of Mumbai or happen to be Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), National Talent Search Examination (NTSE), Jagadish Bose National Science Talent Search (JBNSTS) scholars and Science Olympiad Medalists, opting to undertake courses in the Natural & Basic sciences leading to B.Sc. and M.Sc Degrees are also eligible to apply for ‘SHE’ scholarship.

Applicant should attach attested copies of (i) Certificate of Class X Board Examination for verification of Date of Birth (ii) Mark sheets of Class XII Board Examination (iii) Copy of the Eligibility Certificate/ Note for students passed in 2011 and (iv) Endorsement Certificate from Principal of the College/ Director or Registrar of the Institute or University where the applicant is presently enrolled.

Application can also be submitted online at http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in/requirement.html as per the instructions given there. Applicants both offline & on-line, must submit Hardcopy of the duly filled-in application with all necessary documents in an envelope super scribed ‘Application for INSPIRE Scholarship for 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011’, should reach ‘Director, National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies (NISTADS), Dr K S Krishnan Marg , New Delhi – 110012’, by ordinary Post only, within 90 days from the date of the advertisement in Newspaper. Those who have applied earlier including as per the advertisement dated 3rd April 2011 announcement on INSPIRE Scholarship & waiting for result, need not to make any fresh application now.
