FELLOWSHIP OF THE INDIA DIABETES RESEARCH FOUNDATION

POST GRADUATE TRAINING PROGRAMME IN DIABETOLOGY


Dr. A. Ramachandran, M.D., Ph.D., D.Sc., FRCP.(Lond).(Edin)., is an internationally acknowledged pivotal figure in the field of contemporary Diabetes Health Care and Research. Dr. Ramachandran's extensive contributions in the field of diabetes research cover almost all aspects of Epidemiology of Diabetes Mellitus and its complications, approaches and technology in diabetes health care delivery and health economics of diabetes care. His original research papers in the various areas of diabetology have been published in leading international journals on diabetes care and research. He is the recipient of several international honours and awards. He has been honoured by the Royal College of Physicians of London and Edinburgh by awarding him the Fellowship of their respective colleges. This recognition was mostly due to his outstanding work in the field of diabetes epidemiology at national and international levels.
India Diabetes Research Foundation (IDRF) is a non profit, non commercial scientific institution established by Dr. A. Ramachandran. It is located in the centre of Chennai city and is fully equipped and staffed to conduct research and educational activities in diabetes health care. Dr. A. Ramachandran has also established Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospitals, with the state of the art facilities for providing modern diabetes care.


As part of its education activities, India Diabetes Research Foundation in collaboration with Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospital conducts a regular two year training programme for doctors. This programme is coordinated and conducted by the teaching and research faculty of IDRF and the hospital. On the successful completion of the training programme the doctors will be awarded Fellowship of the India Diabetes Research Foundation. The rules and regulations pertaining to this training programme are given in the succeeding paragraphs.


ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be medical graduates with the basic MBBS Degree. They should have completed the Compulsory Rotatory Internship and possess the registration certificate issued by the Medical Council of India (MCI). Upper age limit is 35 years. The age limit may be relaxed at the discretion of the Selection Committee for doctors in medical service in the government / public sector / private sector undertakings and sponsored for the training by their parent institutions. Applicants from such institutions should apply through proper channel with a “No objection certificate” from the institutional head.


COURSE FEE
The Fee for the entire training programme is Rs. 30,000/- (Rupees Thirty thousand only). The total fee will be paid by the applicant before the commencement of the training programme by a crossed demand draft drawn in favour of "India Diabetes Research Foundation" payable at Chennai


STIPEND & ACCOMMODATION
1. Trainee doctors will be paid monthly stipend of Rs.9,000/- (Rupees Nine Thousand Only) per month to cover their boarding and lodging expenses during the training period. Doctors sponsored by the government / public sector undertakings will not be paid the monthly stipend.
2. Trainee doctors will make their own arrangements for accommodation in Chennai. IDRF will assist them in this regard.


APPLICATION PROCEDURE
1. Eligible medical graduates are to submit their applications as per the application format given in the website along with a crossed draft for Rs. 500/- drawn in favour of IDRF, payable in Chennai as application fee. The details in respect of next post graduate training programme are as under


Last date for receipt of applications – 15 th Nov 2008
Date of Entrance examination – 5 th Dec 2008
Date of Commencement of the Course – 2nd Jan 2009
2. Completed application form should include photocopies of the following documents
a) MBBS Degree Certificate
b) Internship Certificate
c) Registration Certificate issued by Medical Council of India
d) Testimonials and Certificates of Prizes, if any
3. A Crossed draft of Rs.500/- drawn in favour of India Diabetes Research Foundation and payable in Chennai will be enclosed with the documents as application fee.
4. Completed application form with the relevant documents should reach the Managing Director, IDRF by the stipulated date.
5. Incomplete applications will be rejected and no correspondence will be entertained.


SELECTION PROCEDURE
1. Applications will be assessed by the Selection Committee headed by Prof. A. Ramachandran, President, IDRF.
2. The short listed applicants will be called for written examination and interview.
They will be intimated individually and will report at the specified date & time with originals of the certificates submitted by them for verification.
3. No correspondence will be entertained with rejected applicants.
4. Applicants who appear in the written examination, interview and are declared successful will be directed to meet the Director-Projects of the IDRF on the same day, who will explain to them the terms and conditions of the training programme and their contractual obligations.
5. Before joining the training programme, the selected applicants will pay the prescribed fee and will enter into a Formal Agreement with the IDRF which will be based as per the contractual obligations and the terms and conditions explained by the Director– Projects.


DURATION & SCOPE OF TRAINING
The Course will cover four semesters of six months each. At the end of every semester, there will be an examination. Apart from this, daily performance appraisal of their clinical performance, individual attitudes and skills will be made by the teaching
faculty.

The post graduate trainees will undergo clinical training in Dr. A. Ramachandran’s Diabetes Hospitals which will include postings in the wards, OPD and various specialized departments such as Ophthalmology, Diet, Diabetes Education and so on.

IDRF will conduct structured training sessions and CME programs, lectures, including case presentations, journal club sessions and guest lectures throughout the duration of the training period. Sessions on biostatistics and research methodology will be the part of the training programme. Trainees will undertake a research project under a research guide and will submit a dissertation/thesis before appearing in the final examination.


The Management reserves the right to change the terms and conditions of the training programme as these relate to admission procedure, course fee, duration of Programme, rules and regulations applicable to the post graduate trainees and so on
