PhD (Physics) Admission Notice 2015

Applications are invited for admission to the Department of Physics, University of Calcutta (92 Acharyya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata 700009) for PhD Course and subsequent research work leading to PhD degree in Physics.

Essential qualification:
MSc in Physics However, candidates who are studying in the final semester of the qualifying examination and have cleared all the papers in all previous semesters may also apply. Final mark sheet showing that the candidate has indeed passed that qualifying examination should be produced at the time of joining the PhD programme.

Candidates who have already passed UGC / CSIR (JRF) / NET / SET / SLET / GATE / Teacher Eligibility or equivalent examinations or passed the MPhil examination need not appear at the written examination, but have to appear at the interview.

Candidates who wish to pursue research work through this Department should apply in the prescribed proforma (can be downloaded from the departmental webpage at http://www.physics-caluniv.in/admissions.html)  by paying Rs. 100/- through a challan obtainable from Rajabazar Science College Campus (Sales Counter).

Outstation candidates may apply by sending the filled in application form, self attested testimonials along with a demand draft of Rs. 100 in favour of ‘University of Calcutta’ payable at Kolkata.

The eligible candidates will have to appear in a written MCQ-type examination of 1 hour duration to be held in this Department on August 11, 2015 at 1030 hr. The syllabus of this examination is the Physics MSc syllabus of this University excluding Elective and Advanced Papers. The successful candidates will be called for an interview on August 11 and 12, 2015. The final selection for joining this Department as a PhD student will be on the basis of this interview.

The number of PhD students that will be taken this time is at the most 14 (Fourteen), if found suitable, including reservations as per existing rules. The allocation of supervisor will also be on the basis of this interview (see CU website for the areas on which research is carried on here).
