India is one of the world’s largest producers as
well as consumer of food products and Indian food industry ranks fifth in terms
of production, consumption and exports. Food processing industry in India is
increasingly seen as a potential source for driving the rural economy,
establishing a vital linkage and synergy between Industry and Agriculture- the
two pillars of the economy.
Estimated to be worth USD 121 billion, the Indian
food processing industry accounts for 32% of the country’s total food market.
Accounting for 14% of manufacturing GDP, nearly 13% of India’s exports and 6%
of total industrial investment, the industry employs 13 million people directly
and 35 million people indirectly. Currently growing at more than 10% per annum,
it is expected to touch USD 194 billion by 2015 .The Ministry of Food
Processing Industries (MoFPI), in its Vision 2015 Action Plan includes trebling
the size of the food processing industry, raising the level of processing of
perishables from 6% to 20%, increasing value addition from 20% to 35%, and
enhancing India’s share in global food trade from 1.5% to 3%.
Liberalisation and globalization have unveiled new
opportunities for diversification in the foodprocessing sector and opened new
vistas for growth. However, despite continual efforts and initiatives of the
Government to provide the required stimulus to the sector, processing activity
is still at a nascent stage in India with low penetration.
The food processing sector is highly fragmented
industry and a huge number of entrepreneurs in this industry are small in terms
of their production and operations, and are largely concentrated in the unorganized
segment. The significance of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in
this sector is very important being attributable to its capacity of employment
generation, low capital and technology requirement, use of traditional or
inherited skill, use of local resources, mobilization of resources and
exportability of products.
In order to facilitate and exploit the growth
potential of the sector, the government on its part has initiated extensive
reforms. To promote private sector activity and invite foreign investments in
the sector the Government has allowed 100% FDI in the food processing &
cold chain infrastructure.
Objectives
of the Course
The short course is designed for the participants
with the following objectives:
To enhance
knowledge and skills regarding the status and challenges faced by the
food industry in India.
To develop an
overview related to technology, marketing, finance and operations involved in the
small and medium food processing enterprises.
To provide
practical orientation to develop an overall expertise in the food

Eligibility
of Participants
Assistant Professors/ Associate
Professors/Scientists from Agricultural Universities and ICAR in the field of
Agri Business Management/Home Science /Agriculture /Agricultural
Engineering/Dairy Technology and other relevant subjects with at least two
years experience are eligible for the course.
Number of Seats and selection
Number of participants will be 25 and selection
will be on the criteria of suitability for the course followed by first cum
first serve basis.
Duration and
Venue
The short course will be of 10 days duration i.e.,
from 6.1.2014 to 15.1.2014. The venue of the course will be the Institute of
Agri Business Management (IABM), Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural
University, Bikaner.
Application
Form
The application form duly completed in all respects
should reach to the Course Director through proper channel latest by 31.10.2013
along with non-refundable postal order or demand draft of ` 50/- as
registration fee in favour of Director, IABM, Bikaner payable at Bikaner. Once
selected, candidates will be informed through e mail and by post latest by
30.11.2013 to which they should
reply with acceptance by 15.12.2013.
TA/DA
The participants will be paid for the journey, to
and fro, by rail or bus or other means of transport, as
the case may be, on production of certificate for
travel by shortest route. The payment will be made
as per the entitlement class of travel but
restricted to AC II tier train fare. DA will be paid for journey
period only.
Boarding and
Lodging
The participants will be provided rent free
accommodation and boarding facilities in the University guest house during the
training period.
How to Reach
Bikaner is well connected to all parts of India by
train and road. IABM is located 3 km from bus station and 4 km from railway
station. Auto/taxi can be hired from bus/railway station to reach University
guest house.
