ABOUT TEZPUR UNIVERSITY
Tezpur University is located at Napaam, at a distance of 12 Km from Tezpur town, the istrict head quarter of Sonitpur. The town of ‘Usha-Aniruddha fame’ is situated in the North Bank of the mighty river Brahmaputra (Luit).

Regular bus services are available from Guwahati, Tinisukia, Dibrugarh, Jorhat, Lakhimpur and Itanagar to Tezpur. From Tezpur ASTC bus stand, University bus service operates regularly at hourly interval to the University on all working days and also to a limited extent on week ends as well as on holidays as per the schedule.
During the training periods, the climate is likely to be cold with the expected temperature of about 15 - 180C.

Participants are requested to come with warm clothes.

INTRODUCTION
Till date more than 700 bacterial, 60 archaea and 10 eukaryotic genomes (including human) have been sequenced and all of them are now publicly available in three major databases of the world, such as DDBJ, Japan; EMBL, Europe; and NCBI, USA. Prior to 1995, when the complete genome sequence of, Haemophilus influenzae (the first genome sequenced completely) became available, analysis of nucleotide sequences of different genes was carried out by using computer-based programs. In the post genomic era, bioinformatics has become a major thrust area of research to retrieve information from the genome sequences. Hence, bioinformatics is an interdisciplinary science of biology, mathematics (statistics) and computer science. Its implications in the area of evolution, molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, cell and developmental biology have revolutionized these three sciences. Since, human health is a major concern, tools and programs have been developed fitting in to biological research, for which bioinformatics has become almost indispensable. At Tezpur University (Dept. of MBBT), a Bioinformatics Infrastructure Facility (BIF) was established in 2007 with the financial grant from the Bioinformatics Cell, Dept. of Biotechnology, Govt. of India, New Delhi. The BIF is organizing two training programs with the major focus on giving exposure to teachers of colleges and universities, research scholars and master degree students on the usefulness of bioinformatics and its implications. The topics of discussion and hands on training to be imparted are given in details in the prospectus.
