ADMISSIONS 2010-2012

B.Sc.Nautical Science

The three-year B.Sc.Nautical Science course is conducted under affiliation with the University of Madras. It is approved by the Directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It is a course leading to Second Mates Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after 12 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Navigating Officers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. The three-year B.Sc.,Nautical Science course is strictly residential. The syllabus is specially drawn up to give broad based maritime education, with special emphasis on fundamentals of maritime subjects and practical aspects of the profession. The educational and training programme is designed to inculcate officer like qualities and a high sense of discipline in the cadets.

Entry Requirements :

Academic Standards : A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent examination with minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics group, (but not less than 50% in each subject), and atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard
Age : 17 to 25 years as on 3rd August 2009
Medical Standard : Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/6 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.

Diploma in Nautical Science

The one-year Diploma in Nautical Science course is conducted under affiliation with the Indira Gandhi National Open University. It is approved by the directorate General of Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India. It is a course leading to B.Sc. Nautical Science, after 24 months of sea service, and also leading to Second Mates Foreign-Going Certificate of Competency awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after the 18 months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Navigating Officers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world.The one-year Diploma in Nautical Science course is strictly residential.

Entry Requirements

Academic Standards :

(1) Pass in HSC/ISC (10+2) or equivalent from a recognized Board/University with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry with not less than 60% marks in PCM OR With Physics as an individual subject in one of the years of B.Sc.degree from a recognised University with Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Electronics with an average of not less than 55% marks in the final year of B.Sc.Programme OR B.E./B.Tech. or its equivalent degree from I.I.T or from a college recognised by AICTE/UGC/DEC

AND

(2) Should have passed with not less than 50% marks in English as a subject, at either 10th or 12th standard or in the Degree programme conducted by a recognized Board/University

Age : 25 years as on 1st August 2009 (for all categories) , the age of the candidate should be as follows :

· Not more than 20 years in case of 10+2 pass
· Not more than 22 years in case of B.Sc.Degree
· Not more than 24 years in case of BE/B.Tech.

The age limit is relaxable by 2 years in case of female candidates

Medical Standard :

Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/6 in each eye, and with no colour blindness

HND NAUTICAL SCIENCE

The first year of the HND Nautical Science Course will be conducted at VAMS, Chennai, and the second year of study will be conducted at GCNS, Glasgow.
Phase 1 is of 39 weeks at VAMS, followed by 38 weeks at GCNS. Thereafter, 15 months of sea service are required to qualify for Deck Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (earlier known as Class 3 or Second Mates Certificate) examinations in the UK.

Academic Standards : A pass in 10+2 or its equivalent examination with preferably minimum 60% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics group, and preferably atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th standard

Age : Preferably 17 to 20 years as on 2nd September 2009
Medical Standard : Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/6 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.

B.E.Marine Engineering


The four-year B.E.Marine Engineering course, approved by DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India,is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency, awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.

Entry Requirements :

One-Year Presea Training for Graduates (GME)

The One-Year Presea Training course for Graduates (GME), approved by DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency , awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.

Entry Requirements :

Academic Standards : B.E.Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture degree with minimum 50% marks in Final year. The candidate should have obtained atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th std. or degree course

Age : 28 years as on 21st March 2009 or on 5th September 2009 (for next batch)
Medical Standard : Candidate should be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with minimum unaided vision 6/12 in each eye, and with no colour blindness.

Two-Year Presea Training for Diploma Holders (DME)

The Two-Year Presea Training course for Diploma Holders (DME), approved by DG Shipping, Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, is a course leading to Class IV Marine Engineer Officer Certificate of Competency , awarded by the Ministry of Shipping, Government of India, after six months of sea service, enabling the cadets to become Marine Engineers on board Merchant Naval ships anywhere in the world. This course is strictly residential.

Academic Standards : Diploma in Mechanical / Marine / Electrical and Electronic Engineering / Naval Architecture / Electrical Engineering with minimum 50% marks in Final year. The candidate should have obtained atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th std. or Diploma course

Age : 28 years as on 21st March 2009 or on 5th September 2009 (for next batch)

HND MARINE ENGINEERING

The first year of the HND Marine Engineering Course will be conducted at VAMET, Chennai, and the second year of study will be conducted at GCNS, Glasgow. Thereafter, 6 months of sea service are required to qualify for Engineer Officer of the Watch Certificate of Competency (earlier known as Class 4 Certificate) examinations in the UK.
