Application is to be submitted in the PRESCRIBED FORMAT along with Copies of all mark sheets/certificates from +2 onwards
Study Proposal (Please read the GUIDELINES with the Application form)
Application Fee of Rs. 200, as a DD drawn in favour of the Centre for Development Studies, payable at Trivandrum.
SC, ST and PH (with ≥ 40% disability) applicants are exempted from payment of the
application fee

MPhil Programme in Applied Economics
The CDS MPhil Programme admits students from any discipline. The focus on applied economics from a plural perspective and adaptation of effective learning tools add to its uniqueness.

The curriculum is designed to suit:
students of economics who wish to sharpen their skills in applied economic research;
student from other disciplines who are interested in the economic dimensions of social development;
Professionals in Governmental/ Non-Governmental organisations, media and consultant/ research organisations, who seek to enhance their skills in applied economic analysis.


The Programme, started in 1975, has had students from different parts of the country and with range of academic backgrounds including technology, medicine, agriculture, forestry, law, sociology, and mathematics. Currently, the 37th batch is completing coursework. Up to now 350 students have graduated and the alumni occupy important positions in the academia, journalism, government and in civil society organizations.

C u r r i c u l u m

The Programme involves coursework and a dissertation completed under faculty guidance.
The coursework, spread over 4 courses in two semesters, comprises modules on quantitative techniques, economic theory and its application to selected economic problems and Indian economy.
The dissertations are usually on issues in national/regional economy or on social/ historical/ environmental problems with an economic dimension. Students are free to take up subjects falling within any area of specialisation, depending on their interest, provided they focus on a problem with an economic dimension. The studies are to be completed by the end of the fourth semester. The maximum period to be spent on the programme is two years from the start, although it is possible to complete it in less than two years.

E L I G I B I L I T Y T O A P P L Y :
Master’s in Economics/ other Social Sciences/ Humanities/ Law with ≥ 55% or
in Sciences/ Technology /Life Sciences with ≥ 60%.
Those awaiting results of the qualifying examination may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the Programme only if their previous institutions certify that they have completed all requirements for award of degree. The name of such candidate shall stand automatically removed from the rolls of the Centre & University if he/she fails to secure the requisite marks in Master’s, when his/her Master’s results are announced.
• SC, ST & PH (with >40% disability) candidates eligible irrespective of percentage of marks for the Master’s.

CDS envisages an intake of 10 students this year
• Statutory reservations for SC, ST, OBC (non-creamy layer) & PH (≥ 40% disability) candidates.
• Foreign nationals and officials nominated by the Government of Kerala will be considered separately.
Selected candidates are admitted to the MPhil Programme; and they can seek to be considered for admission to PhD Programme after the completion of coursework subject to conditions.

THE S E L E C T I O N P R O C E S S has two stages.
A. Preliminary Screening is based on the aggregate score for academic record (from +2 to Master’s) and the research proposal.
B. Short listed candidates shall then undergo a written test and interview at CDS.
Final selection shall be based on the combined score for the written test and Interview

2. JNU Registration/Enrolment fee: Rs. 3115
The written test and Personal Interviews are scheduled at CDS on JULY 03 & 04, 2012
Candidates appearing for the interview will be reimbursed the return Sleeper Class rail fare if the current residence (indicated as address for communication in the application) is more than 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram.

PhD Programme in Economics
Launched in 1975, the PhD Programme at CDS offers registration under the Jawaharlal Nehru University. CDS is also a recognised research centre of the University of Kerala for the PhD. So far 57 candidates have been awarded PhD (48 from JNU and 9 from KU); seven theses are under evaluation and 21 scholars are registered. (March 2012)


S e le c t io n Pr o c e s s
CDS envisages an intake of 6 students this year. The selection process has two phases:
First, candidates will be short–listed for written test & interview on the basis of the merit of their Study Proposal
Evaluation of the Study Proposal will be done by a panel of faculty members.
This year we invite study proposals in the following areas:
• Gender and Development
• Industry, Trade and Technology 4
• Migration
• Population and Human Development
• Poverty, Vulnerability and Social Security
• Issues in Economic Growth and Development
• Labour and Employment
The final selection will be based on a written test and personal interview. Besides, merit the selection committee will consider the viability of conducting the study proposed by the candidate at CDS.
The written test and personal interviews are scheduled to be held at CDS on JULY 10 & 11, 2012
Candidates appearing for the interview will be reimbursed return sleeper class rail fare if the current residence (indicated as address for communication in the application) is more than 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram.


Selected candidates are required to join the Programme on August 01, 2012.


E lig i b ili t y
MPhil with Final Grade Point Average of at least 6.0 (high second class) on a 10 point scale and a Master’s degree with ≥ 55% marks in Economics or related disciplines.
In exceptional cases, those who do not have an MPhil may be considered if they have at least two years’ research experience in a University/ Research Institution and research publications in refereed academic journals.

Those awaiting award of the MPhil Degree may also apply. Such candidates, if selected, shall be allowed to join the Programme only if their previous institutions certify that they have completed all requirements for award of degree. The name of such candidate shall stand automatically removed from the rolls of the Centre & University if he/she fails to secure the requisite FGPA in M.Phil, when his/her
MPhil results are announced.
SC, ST & PH (with >40% disability) candidates are eligible irrespective of percentage of marks secured in the qualifying degree.


Foreign nationals and those who have undergone the qualifying Programmes abroad will be eligible subject to clarification on equivalence of their Degrees by the University.


ADMISSION 2012
CDS invites applications in two categories.
1. External candidates applying for direct admission with eligibility as above.5
2. Students of the CDS MPhil Programme from 2009 onwards seeking Provisional admission to PhD Programme through the following channels:
a. At the end of the MPhil Coursework, if obtaining a Cumulative GPA of at least 6.50
and with a fellowship, or
b. Upon completion of the MPhil Programme including dissertation, with a Final GPA of at least 6. This would enables student to join the programme without waiting for the award of the MPhil Degree; In this case, the PhD enrolment shall be provisional to obtaining the requisite FGPA.


Note: CGPA of 6 and FGPA of 5.50 for SC/ST & PH (with >40% disability) candidates
Admission to the PhD Programme is subject to the acceptance of the PhD study proposal submitted with the application.

All the selected candidates will be offered Fellowships, available under various schemes, except in the case of students seeking admission through 2 b above.
• ICSSR Institutional Doctoral Fellowships
• Selected scholars, who have qualified for UGC’s JRF/SRF, RGNF and Maulana Azad
National Fellowship may avail of such fellowships for the CDS Programme.
• Selected scholars from SC/ST communities of Kerala can seek assistance under the
Government of Kerala Fellowship Scheme.
• CDS Endowment Fellowships under the National Research Programme on Plantation
Development, funded by the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India


C a mp u s F a c i l it i e s
Hostel accommodation is available on campus for the tenure of the registration. CDS has separate hostels for men and women. All rooms have attached bath and are moderately furnished. Campus has a cafeteria serving south Indian cuisine, run by the Self Employed Women’s Association. a women’s non governmental organization .
