Admission formalities for various courses of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University have been initiated. The University offers doctoral, post graduate, graduate, diploma and certificate courses in veterinary and allied subjects in its four constituent colleges and three affiliated institutes. In addition, several technology enabled distance learning programmes are also offered.

Admission to all courses except B.V.Sc. & A.H and B. Tech (Dairy Science and Technology) are done directly by the University in online mode. Fees can be paid at various branches of Federal bank. Notification for all the courses will be available at the KVASU website www.kvasu.ac.in  from May 15th 2014 onwards. Various academic programmes of the University are as follows:

Undergraduate Courses
1. B.V.Sc. & A.H.: The undergraduate course, Bachelor of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.), is the basic qualification for practicing as a qualified veterinary practitioner in India. Admission to B.V.Sc. & A.H. is through the common medical entrance examination conducted by Kerala Government and Veterinary Council of India. Veterinary Colleges at Mannuthy and Pookode conducts the course.

2. B. Tech (Dairy Science and Technology): College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy offers Bachelor of Dairy Science and Technology (B. Tech.) course. Admission to the B. Tech. (D.Sc. and Tech.) course is done through the common engineering entrance examination conducted by Government of Kerala. Candidates are also nominated from ICAR.

3. B.Sc. Poultry Production and Business Management (PP&BM): College of Avian Sciences and Management, Thiruvazhamkunnu offers this new under graduate course from the Academic Year 2014 – 15 onwards. This course aims to mould managerial experts having adequate knowledge in poultry production. The graduates will have employment opportunities in key areas such as Poultry Production, Feed Mill management, Marketing and Poultry Processing. It also aims at supporting self-entrepreneurs who can take up their own ventures in poultry business.  Admission to B.Sc. (PP&BM) is regulated through an entrance examination conducted by KVASU.  Eligibilty: 10+2 Higher Secondary Examination with English, Physics, Chemistry and Biology with at least 50% marks  aggregate for these subjects in the qualifying examination.  Duration of course: 6 semesters (3 years). Number of seats available: 30

Postgraduate Courses
1. M.V.Sc.: Master of Veterinary Science (M.V.Sc.) course is offered by KVASU in various disciplines. The duration of the programme is two years, in four semesters. The admission to M.V.Sc. course is through an entrance examination conducted by the University. A few seats are reserved for ICAR candidates who qualify entrance examination conducted by ICAR and are advised to the KVASU. Moreover, seats are available in specific departments for candidates sponsored by Animal Husbandry Department (AHD), Government of Kerala. Any candidate with a Bachelors degree in Veterinary and Animal Sciences  recognized by the University with an OGPA of 6.0/10 or equivalent OGPA/equivalent percentage of 50% marks in traditional system are eligible to apply. For SC/ST candidates the OGPA shall be 5.5/10 or equivalent.
From this academic year onwards Residency system is introduced in KVASU for M.V.Sc and M.Tech programmes. One M.V.Sc. seat each, in 16 subjects in the Colleges of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Pookode and Mannuthy and one seat for M.Tech at College of Dairy Science and Technology, Mannuthy are reserved for this new innovative programme. The selection for Residency programme is based on option and merit of the candidate. The selected candidates will receive fellowship as decided by the University. They need to pay Re.1/- (Rupee one only) as tuition fee and are exempted from paying any of university fees.

2. M. Tech. in Dairy Technology: The programme comprising of four semesters with an intake capacity of five students is conducted at the College of Dairy Science and Technology. Admission to M.Tech. course is through an entrance examination conducted by the University.
Doctoral Programme (Ph.D.): Ph.D. programme is available at CVAS, Mannuthy and Pookode in various disciplines. Minimum duration of the programme is three years. Students with Masters Degree in the respective/related subject recognized by the University, with an OGPA of 7.5/10 or equivalent is eligible to apply. Admission is through an entrance examination conducted by the University.

Master of Science Programmes
To meet the demands of a comprehensive development in Livestock and allied sectors of the state and to promote entrepreneurial ventures in the livestock sector, KVASU has initiated academic programmes in diverse subjects of the Veterinary and Dairy sectors. Taking into account the requirement and essentiality of livestock and allied industry and the physical constraints of the learner, courses ranging from short term distance education mode modules to in- campus Masters degree programmes have been formulated.
Master of Science programmes are offered in (1) Biostatistics (2) Quality Systems in Dairy Processing (3) Wildlife Studies (4) Applied Biochemistry (5) Applied Microbiology (6) Animal Biotechnology and (7) Animal Sciences.

1. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biostatistics
Master of Science in Biostatistics is an interdisciplinary postgraduate course combining statistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology and health sciences and is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy. The course will enable the students to become biostatisticians, biostatistical programmers, SAS programmers, consultants and researchers in industry, hospitals, public health labs, planning and research departments, universities and government institutions. Eligibility: Bachelors degree in Statistics or Mathematics with Statistics as subsidiary subject at higher secondary level. Duration: Four semesters. Number of seats available: 15

2. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Quality Systems in Dairy Processing
This post graduate course is designed to generate qualified professionals to handle the emerging needs in quality control sector in Dairy Industry and is conducted in CDST, Mannuthy. The course will further equip the students and open up opportunities to undertake career in quality management of food products in a global scale, as supporting staff for teaching, research etc. Eligibility: Graduation in Dairy Technology /Food Technology /Food Science /Biotechnology /Chemistry /Nutrition and Dietetics from a recognized University. Duration: Four semesters. Number of seats available: 10.

3. Master of Science (MS) in Wildlife Studies
With increase in the concern for conservation of wild life in situ and in captivity globally over the years, there is an increase in the demand for trained personnel with sufficient practical exposure to manage real life situations involving free ranging and captive wildlife. The MS (Wildlife Studies) course of KVASU aims to equip bioscience graduates to qualify for jobs in wildlife sectors like those associated with zoos, forest and wildlife department, NGOs etc. where there is an increasing demand for wildlife biologists who can act as a link between wildlife, the wildlife veterinarian and the management. The course also will train students to develop academic and research skills in wildlife related matters so that they can take up further studies in national and international institutes of importance. It is conducted at CVAS, Pookode, Wayanad. Eligibility: Bachelor’s Degree in Biosciences (Botany, Zoology, Veterinary, Forestry). Duration: Four semesters. Number of seats available: 10.

4. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
This post graduate course is designed to generate qualified persons to handle the emerging needs in applied biochemistry. The course will equip the students to undertake career in teaching, research and in diagnostic laboratories/institutions. Duration - Four semesters, eligibility - Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry / Biotechnology from a recognized University, Number of seats available – 10 . The programme is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy

5. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Applied Microbiology
Applied microbiology is an important area with a co-ordinated approach, clubbing all the relevant fields which cater for the beneficial use of microbes for the betterment of the society. This programme is designed to generate qualified personnel to handle the rapidly emerging needs in the field of Applied Microbiology. A student mastering this course will therefore be able to do independent research or become professional specialist in any of the several areas covered by the curriculum. Duration - 4 semesters, Eligibility - Bachelors degree in Microbiology /Zoology /Botany /Biotechnology /Veterinary Science / Agriculture; Number of seats available – 10. The programme is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy

6. Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Animal Biotechnology
            This programme is designed to meet the great demand for trained manpower in biotechnology world over and particularly in India. Eligibility: B.Sc./B.Tech in Biotechnology /B.Tech in Dairy Sciences /B. Sc. Life Sciences; Duration: 4 semesters; Number of seats available – 10. The programme is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy

7.    Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Animal Sciences
M.Sc. Animal Sciences programme is offered by Livestock Production and Management department under Faculty of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy. The course aims to develop skills in designing projects and its efficient implementation by imparting knowledge on project management, human resource management and business management.  Eligibility: B.V.Sc. /B.Sc. Agriculture or other life sciences /B.Sc. Forestry; Duration: 4 semesters; Number of seats available - 10 (Preference for sponsored candidates)

DIPLOMA COURSES
1. Diploma in Poultry Production
The course “Diploma in Poultry Production” is designed to impart basic theoretical knowledge and reasonable practical experience in all aspects of poultry farming activities. Eligibility: Pass in Plus 2 with Biology or VHSE with Poultry / Livestock Production Management /Dairy Science. Duration: One Year (Two Semesters). Number of seats available: 60 (30 at CVAS, Mannuthy and 30 at CVAS, Pookode).  In addition to this, Diploma in Poultry production will be offered at three affiliated institutes of KVASU at Konni, Pathanamthitta; Chathannur, Kollam and Pulpally, Wayanad where 20 seats each will be reserved as merit seats and will be filled up from the rank list prepared by the University.

2. Diploma in Laboratory Techniques
The Diploma course in laboratory techniques intends to impart advanced skills to mould practicing laboratory professionals to excel in quality disease diagnosis to serve as an integral part of country’s health care system. Eligibility: Pass in Plus 2 or VHSE with Biology as one of the subjects. Duration: One Year (Two Semesters). Number of seats available: 30 at CVAS, Mannuthy.  In addition to this, Diploma in Laboratory Techniques will be offered at three affiliated institutes of KVASU at Konni, Pathanamthitta, Chathannur, Kollam and Pulpally, Wayanad where 20 seats each will be reserved as merit seats and will be filled up from the rank list prepared by the University.

3. Diploma in Dairy Science
Diploma in Dairy Science, a human resources development programme comprising both husbandry and dairy processing intends to promote personals in the dairy farm management sector and to man small dairy processing units. It is also expected that such trained human resources would be having good demand from outside the country.  Eligibility: Pass in Pre Degree or equivalent examinations in science subjects or VHSC with Livestock Management (Dairy Husbandry) or Dairying (Milk Products). Duration: Two year (Four Semesters). Number of seats available: 60 (30 at CVAS, Mannuthy and 30 at CVAS, Pookode). 

P.G. Diploma Courses from the Academic Year 2014 - 15

1. P.G. Diploma in Climate Services in Animal Agriculture
The course aims to generate trained manpower as a part of capacity building in climate change education, research and extension to meet the national and global demand of resource personnel in this field of specialization. Duration: I year (two semesters); Eligibility: M.V.Sc/Ph.D/ B.V.Sc in the case of  departmental/sponsored candidates; Number of seats : 20.

2. P.G. Diploma in Climate Services
The P.G. diploma in Climate Services will build expertise in climate research and relationships with local, national and international institutes and organizations, including India Meteorological Department, Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, National Institute of Oceanography, Indian Space Research Organization, CUSAT, KAU and KUFOS etc.  Duration: I year (two semesters); Eligibility: B.Tech/M.Tech/M.Sc/B.Sc  - open to general stream; Number of seats : 20.

TECHNOLOGY ENABLED DISTANT LEARNING PROGRAMMES
a. P.G. Diploma Programmes
1. P.G. Diploma in Livestock-Agri Entrepreneurship and Food Security Management (PGD in LEFM)-
The course P.G. Diploma is designed to develop entrepreneurial talent among practicing Veterinary, Agriculture, Dairy Science and Technology, Fisheries, Horticulture and Home Science graduates. It will help them to implement Entrepreneurship development programmes, strategic planning, implementation & monitoring of the programmes and to address the food security and food safety issues affecting agriculture and allied sectors. Candidates working under Government/public/private sector/NGO can apply for this programme. Duration: 12 months as two semesters with five days of contact classes per semester; Total number of seats:  200 seats per annum; Eligibility: Graduates with B.V.Sc. & A.H./ B. Tech (Dairy Science and Technology), B.Sc. (Agriculture)/   B.Sc. (Horticulture) /BFSc / B.Sc. (Co-operation & Banking) or B.Sc. Home Science degrees.

2. PG diploma in Ethnopharmacology (PGDEP)
The main purpose of the course is to make awareness among graduates about the importance of medicinal plants and traditional healing practices. Researchers, faculty of various institutions, veterinarians, practitioners of various medical disciplines will benefit from this course in widening their understanding of this traditional yet largely side lined science with immense potential for day to day application and research. Any graduate can enroll for the course, preferably graduates with B.V.Sc. & AH, BAMS, B.Pharm and B.Sc. (Botany).  Duration of the course is one year (2 Semesters). There will be 5 days of contact classes for each semester. Total number of seats:  100 seats per annum.

3. PG Diploma in One Health
 This program is first of its kind in India and is designed to provide One Health-specific exposure to public health, veterinary health, and environmental health professionals and students who wish to follow such careers.  Any graduate or post graduate in health sciences (medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, complementary & alternative medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy) and Environmental science from any recognized University can enroll for the course. Duration of the course is 12 months (2 Semesters). There will be 5 days of contact classes in each semester. Total number of seats:  50 seats per annum.

4. PG Diploma in Informatics and Management (PGDIM)
This post graduate diploma programme in Informatics and Management (PG DIM) envisage creating value addition for Veterinary and Dairy Science degree so as to get better positions in in the career market. Prefinal and final year B.V.Sc. & A. H. and B. Tech (D. Sc. & Tech.) students can apply for the program (anticipating 400 seats per annum).

5. Diploma in  Integrated Farming Systems (DIFS)
KVASU has launched this programme in Malayalam in collaboration with CPCRI, Kayamkulam and CIFT, Kochi.  Duration of the course is 12 months (2 Semesters). There will be 5 days of contact classes in each semester.  Eligibility- Women self help group members with SSLC and five years experience in farming (anticipating 400 seats per annum).

6. P.G. Certificate Course in Farm Journalism (PGC in FJ) 
This programme will help to develop journalistic skills among practicing Veterinary, Agriculture, Dairy science and Technology, Fisheries, Horticulture and Home Science graduates and will equip them to work as media/public relations managers. Candidates working under Government/public/private sector/NGO can apply for this programme. Duration - 6 months. During the period of study candidate has to attend contact classes for 5 days; Eligibility- B.V.Sc. & A.H./ B.Tech. (Dairy Science and Technology), B.Sc. (Agriculture)/ B.Sc. (Horticulture) /BFSc/ B.Sc. (Co-operation & Banking), B.Sc. Home science, any graduate; Number of seats available: 100.

7. PG Certificate (One Health)
The purpose of the PG certificate course on One Health is the establishment of closer professional interactions, collaborations, and educational opportunities across the various health professionals especially the veterinary and human health professions, together with their allied sciences, in order to improve health of our communities and animal health. This programme is intended for busy professionals and graduate/ post graduate in any science subjects preferably from health sciences (medicine, dentistry, veterinary science, complementary & alternative medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physiotherapy) and Environmental Science. The syllabus of the course covers basics of One Health, zoonoses and health economics, one health policy and public health administration and other courses concentrating on wild life, environment science and leadership. Duration of the course is 6 months (1 semester). There will be 5 days of contact classes.  Number of seats: 100.

8. UoG-KVASU Joint CertLAM (Certificate Course in Laboratory Animal Medicine)
It is a Postgraduate certificate programme designed with the objective to provide qualified Indian veterinarians with opportunities to enroll in Guelph’s  LAM programme and to become internationally qualified in the field of Laboratory Animal Medicine that is on high demand in almost all developed countries.  Duration of the course is 3 months to maximum 2 years. The number of seats is maximum of TEN per term. There will be three terms per year depending on the demand.

CERTIFICATE COURSES
1. Certificate Course in Animal Handling
This is a novel course designed specifically for employing persons in the Dept. of Animal Husbandry as animal attendants and is conducted at CVAS, Mannuthy The course is entirely a practical oriented programme.  It generates practical know how and exercise in assisting with all kinds of work like cleaning the animal sheds and premises, sterilization of instruments, preparation of swabs, restrain of  animals during treatment/surgery/vaccination/ transit, care of young ones, assisting in management  of animals and  birds, etc., routinely done at  Veterinary Centres, Artificial insemination centres, livestock and poultry farms. Eligibility: A pass in 7th standard and reading and writing knowledge of Malayalam. Experience in animal management by rearing livestock at home is desirable, which should be certified by the Ward member, Panchayath President and local Veterinarian. Duration: 6 months. The course shall be offered two times a year.

2. Certificate Programme in Livestock Production
Lack of entrepreneurial confidence is the main stumbling block which keeps the unemployed youth away from starting enterprises in Livestock sector. Equipping and empowering the youth by systematic training programmes and necessary follow up actions will contribute beneficially for augmenting Livestock sector in the State. It will also cater as a pre-qualifying course for school drop outs for entry to various diploma programmes of the University.  The syllabus includes introduction to livestock production, brief and practical study on breeding, feeding and managemental practices of cattle, goat, pig, rabbit and poultry, entrepreneurial importance of livestock sector, veterinary first aid, administration of medicines, fodder production, processing and preservation, milking and value addition, waste management, accounting and marketing and resource integration. Eligibility: SSC or equivalent and preference may be given to tribal community. The Medium of instruction would be Malayalam. Duration: 6 months.  The course shall be offered two times a year.

Applications are invited for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in Development Studies, starting in July 2013, as per details of information indicated below.

Categories of Students for M.A. Programme in Development Studies

The Institute admits MA students under the following categories:

I)   REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
The students will work full-time for their M.A. degree.

II)  SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organization, NGO, development agency or industry for doing MA in the Institute on a full-time basis.  The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.  He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute.  Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

Note:  The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to MA Programme.

Eligibility for Regular M.A. Candidates
A Bachelor’s (10+2+3) degree (Major/Honours) or equivalent from a recognized University, in any  discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale (45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD candidates) in major/honours only
OR

Candidates not having Major/Honours courses, must have the concerned degree with a minimum 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for General/OBC category candidates and a minimum 45% aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a     10-point scale for SC/ST/PD category candidates.


Eligibility for Sponsored (Full-Time) M.A. Candidates
Same as for `Regular’ candidates, but also fulfilling additional conditions specified for Sponsored (Full-Time) candidates, as indicated under  “Categories of Students for MA Programme”.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2013. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by            26-08-2013. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and all other conditions as mentioned under eligibility criteria for admission in to the programme. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.



Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD  applicants

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories.
OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below. The OBC(NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after               01-09-2012, shall only be acceptable. 



Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)



1. Institute Merit Scholarship is provided in the 2nd year to the student who secures highest Yearly Performance Index (YPI) during 1st year of the programme, subject to the condition that the concerned student clears all the courses in first available chance.
 
2. Merit-cum-Means Scholarships are available to a maximum of 25% students belonging to General/OBC categories, based on criteria of merit as well as means (as to be decided by the Institute from time to time).

3. All SC/ST students are eligible for SC/ST scholarships as per Institute rule.

First Step

Please get a print-out of the `Guideline for Filling-up Online M.A. Application Form’, by visiting the concerned website given below.

Second Step

For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following documents (including scanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading). Otherwise, you may have difficulty in completing on-line submission of your application form.

(i)   A scanned soft copy of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg or jpg or gif only, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your coloured photograph is mandatory.

IF A SCANNED COPY OF YOUR COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT UPLOADED, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

(ii)  A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);



(iii) If applicable, a scanned soft copy of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL) Certificate as per format prescribed below)], in image format like jpeg or jpg or gif only, of size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that OBC(NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or after 01-09-2012.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU APPLY AS SC/ST/OBC(NCL) CANDIDATE, BUT DO NOT UPLOAD A SCANNED COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE CASTE CERTIFICATE, YOUR CLAIM FOR CONSIDERATION UNDER RESERVATION CATEGORY MAY BE REJECTED; AND YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED UNDER GENERAL CATEGORY.

(iv)   if applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate;

(v) if applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [ i.e. Sponsored (Full-Time)] - as per format prescribed below;

(vi) Scanned soft copies of (a) Pass Certificate (Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form.

If you are not in a position to upload scanned copy of your qualifying degree pass certificate due to reasons beyond your control, if called for Written Test, you will be allowed to personally submit the same in the concerned Department on the day of Written Test.

BUT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED YOUR QUALIFYING DEGREE PROGRAMME, AND DO NOT UPLOAD SCANNED COPY OF THE CONSOLIDATED MARK SHEET, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

THOSE APPEARING IN THEIR FINAL EXAMINATION will need to scan and upload only the Mark Sheet of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree; and this is MANDATORY.

Please note that, if called for Written Test, the candidate will have to produce the Originals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from Class X onwards).
