Admission to M.A. in Development Studies programme, to start from July 2013


Eligibility (Regular/Sponsored Candidates)   Financial Support     Application Procedure     

Applications are invited for admission to the Master of Arts (M.A.) programme in Development Studies, starting in July 2013, as per details of information indicated below.

Categories of Students for M.A. Programme in Development Studies

The Institute admits MA students under the following categories:

I)   REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
The students will work full-time for their M.A. degree.

II)  SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organization, NGO, development agency or industry for doing MA in the Institute on a full-time basis.  The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.  He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute.  Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

Note:  The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to MA Programme.

Eligibility for Regular M.A. Candidates
A Bachelor’s (10+2+3) degree (Major/Honours) or equivalent from a recognized University, in any  discipline, with a minimum of 50% marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale (45% marks or 5.0 CPI in a 10-point scale for SC/ST/PD candidates) in major/honours only
OR

Candidates not having Major/Honours courses, must have the concerned degree with a minimum 50% aggregate marks or 5.5 CPI in a 10-point scale for General/OBC category candidates and a minimum 45% aggregate marks or 5.0 CPI in a     10-point scale for SC/ST/PD category candidates.


Eligibility for Sponsored (Full-Time) M.A. Candidates
Same as for `Regular’ candidates, but also fulfilling additional conditions specified for Sponsored (Full-Time) candidates, as indicated under  “Categories of Students for MA Programme”.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2013. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by            26-08-2013. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and all other conditions as mentioned under eligibility criteria for admission in to the programme. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.



Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD  applicants

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories.
OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below. The OBC(NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after               01-09-2012, shall only be acceptable. 



Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)



1. Institute Merit Scholarship is provided in the 2nd year to the student who secures highest Yearly Performance Index (YPI) during 1st year of the programme, subject to the condition that the concerned student clears all the courses in first available chance.
 
2. Merit-cum-Means Scholarships are available to a maximum of 25% students belonging to General/OBC categories, based on criteria of merit as well as means (as to be decided by the Institute from time to time).

3. All SC/ST students are eligible for SC/ST scholarships as per Institute rule.

Application Procedure
 
First Step

Please get a print-out of the `Guideline for Filling-up Online M.A. Application Form’, by visiting the concerned website given below.

Second Step

For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following documents (including scanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading). Otherwise, you may have difficulty in completing on-line submission of your application form.

(i)   A scanned soft copy of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg or jpg or gif only, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your coloured photograph is mandatory.

IF A SCANNED COPY OF YOUR COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT UPLOADED, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

(ii)  A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);



(iii) If applicable, a scanned soft copy of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL) Certificate as per format prescribed below)], in image format like jpeg or jpg or gif only, of size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that OBC(NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or after 01-09-2012.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU APPLY AS SC/ST/OBC(NCL) CANDIDATE, BUT DO NOT UPLOAD A SCANNED COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE CASTE CERTIFICATE, YOUR CLAIM FOR CONSIDERATION UNDER RESERVATION CATEGORY MAY BE REJECTED; AND YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED UNDER GENERAL CATEGORY.

(iv)   if applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate;

(v) if applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [ i.e. Sponsored (Full-Time)] - as per format prescribed below;

(vi) Scanned soft copies of (a) Pass Certificate (Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form.

If you are not in a position to upload scanned copy of your qualifying degree pass certificate due to reasons beyond your control, if called for Written Test, you will be allowed to personally submit the same in the concerned Department on the day of Written Test.

BUT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED YOUR QUALIFYING DEGREE PROGRAMME, AND DO NOT UPLOAD SCANNED COPY OF THE CONSOLIDATED MARK SHEET, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

THOSE APPEARING IN THEIR FINAL EXAMINATION will need to scan and upload only the Mark Sheet of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree; and this is MANDATORY.

Please note that, if called for Written Test, the candidate will have to produce the Originals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from Class X onwards). This is also applicable for the result awaited candidates, except that along with other required documents they will produce Original as well as attested copies of all Mark Sheets of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree.

(vii) if applicable, attested copy of Certificates relating to your  professional experience etc..

(viii) Demand Draft : Demand Draft is NOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test.

In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called* to appear in Written Test, only then he/she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.


Note:   *  Instead of waiting to receive the call letter, you may keep on visiting and seeing updates in the website of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences of IIT Guwahati.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE NOW NOT REQUIRED TO SEND HARD COPIES OF ANY APPLICATION RELATED DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING THE DOWNLOADED ON-LINE APPLICATION FORM OR ANY DEMAND DRAFT, TO THE INSTITUTE.

IF YOU ARE SHORTLISTED AND CALLED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES OF IIT GUWAHATI FOR WRITTEN TEST,  THEN ONLY YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PERSONALLY BRING ALL SUCH DOCUMENTS IN ORIGINAL (ALONG WITH A SET OF DUPLICATE COPIES).


Third Step

Please:

(i) enter in to the zone of Online Application Form by visiting the concerned website given below; and

(ii) fill-up the Online Application Form [by going through  the `Guideline for Filling-up Online M.A. Application Form’ ] and submit ( i.e. execution of `Final Submit’ function);

(iii) Upload your photo and other relevant documents as explained at points (i), (iii) and (vi) under Second Step above.

YOU CAN UPLOAD THESE DOCUMENTS ONLY AFTER SUCCESSFUL SUBMISSION OF ONLINE APPLICATION FORM [i.e. only after (not before or simultaneously) successful execution of `Final Submit’ function).

YOU ARE AGAIN REMINDED THAT UPLOADING OF DOCUMENTS AS STATED AGAINST POINTS (i), (iii) AND (vi) UNDER SECOND STEP ABOVE, ARE MANDATORY. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY TO THIS REQUIREMENT, YOUR APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

Fourth Step

Please:

(a) take a print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and

(b) also keep a copy of your Filled-up Online Application Form saved in your computer or a CD or a Pen Drive (if the computer does not belong to you) for your future reference.

Fifth Step
After getting the print-out of your Online Application Form, you may put your signature with date on the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form.

YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SEND THE SIGNED HARD COPY [DOWNLOADED COPY] OF YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO IIT GUWAHATI NOW@.

Note: @    Please note that, if you are called to appear in Written Test,  then only you will be required to submit (i) all these documents (including your signed and filled-up Online Application Form), PLUS (ii) the required Demand Draft in original [as explained at point (ix) under `Second Step’], in the Department in which you are applying for admission (i.e. Department of Humanities & Social Sciences of IIT Guwahati).   .

Selection

Applicants satisfying the eligibility requirement will be assessed for selection through a WRITTEN TEST. The written test aims at assessment of knowledge about contemporary issues in the field and sensitivity to social issues, expressed through written analysis in English.

Legal Jurisdiction

The Courts at Guwahati alone shall have the jurisdiction to settle and decide all matters and disputes related to the above referred admission process, as IIT Guwahati is the organizing Institute.
