Applications are invited for admission to the Master of Technology (MTech) and Master of Design (MDes) programmes starting in July 2013. The departments and areas in which these programmes will be offered are:

Categories of MTech/MDes Students

The Institute admits MTech/MDes students under the following categories:

i)   REGULAR (FULL -TIME)
These are students who work full-time for their MTech/MDes degrees and receive assistantships from the Institute or fellowship from any other recognised funding agency.

ii)  SPONSORED (FULL-TIME)
A candidate in this category is sponsored by a recognised R&D organisation, academic institution, governmental organisation or industry for doing MTech/MDes in the Institute on a full-time basis.  The applicant must be a regular employee of his/her organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought.  He/She will not receive any financial support from the Institute.  Sponsorship letter (Form I) must be attached with the application.

iii)  PART-TIME
This category refers to candidates who are professionally employed personnel (including the staff of IIT Guwahati), who can attend classes at the Institute while employed.  These candidates should be able to attend regular classes as per the schedule of the Institute. The applicant must be a regular employee of a recognized organisation with at least two years of experience at the time of admission and be engaged in professional work in the discipline in which admission is sought. No financial assistance will be provided by the Institute to such students. A No Objection Certificate from the Head of the Institution/ Organisation in which he/she is employed (Form II) must be enclosed at the time of application.

iv)   PROJECT STAFF
This category refers to candidates who are presently working on sponsored projects in the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati.  The remaining duration of the project at the time of admission should be at least one year. This category of students may be registered on a full-time or part-time basis. No Objection Certificate (Form III) must be attached with the application.

Note:  The word `Form’ used under this section refers to the forms as specified in the Application Form for Admission to
            MTech/MDes Programmes.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MTech Programme

Minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or First Class in the qualifying degree, fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines, as indicated below:

   Note:     (a)     All regular category candidates (except those having BTech degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section “Financial Support” below.

(b)       Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, and Part-Time categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.


Computer Science & Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or MSc (Computer Science/Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and a valid GATE score in CS.

Electronics & Communication Engineering
     Bachelor’s degree in Electrical/ Electronics Engineering or Equivalent or MSc(Electronics) and a valid GATE score in EC/EE
For `Power and Control’ specialization, a valid GATE score in         EE or IN is a must.

Mechanical Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a)   `ME’ for the specializations of (i) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, and (ii) Machine Design; and
(b)   `ME’ or `PI’  for the specialization of “Computer Assisted Manufacturing” only; and
(c)    `ME’ or ` Aerospace Eng.’ for the specialization of “Computational Mechanics” only.

Civil Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a)   `CE’  for the specializations of (i) Structural Engineering,     (ii) Geotechnical Engineering, (iii) Environmental Engineering, (iv) Transportation Systems Engineering;
(b)   `CE’ or `AR’  for the specialization of “Infrastructure Engineering and Management”; and
(c)    `CE’ or `AG’ for the specialization of “Water Resources Engineering and Management” only.

Chemical Engineering
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area (having Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, and Process Control, as subjects in undergraduate programme) and a valid GATE score in Chemical Engineering.


Biotechnology
Master’s degree in Science or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later, along with a valid GATE score in related disciplines. 

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MDes Programme

Minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% of marks in the qualifying degree/diploma as indicated below:

   Note:     (a)     All regular category candidates (except those having BTech/BDes degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of all India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section “Financial Support” below.

(b)       Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, and Part-Time categories of candidates, have been indicated below.

1)   4-year Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field.

OR

4-year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)




MINIMUM EXPERIENCE FOR SPONSORED FULL-TIME AND PART-TIME CATEGORIES OF APPLICANTS FOR MTECH/MDES PROGRAMME

1.   Candidate in Sponsored Full-Time and Part-time categories must be a regular employee of the sponsoring organization with at least 2(two) years of professional experience in the respective field.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS FOR CANDIDATES STILL TO APPEAR IN QUALIFYING EXAMINATIONS

Candidates still to appear in their qualifying degree examinations may also apply, provided they appear in all their qualifying degree examinations and complete all requirements for their degrees before 15-07-2013. If selected, such candidates shall be admitted provisionally, and they will have to furnish the results of their qualifying degree examinations latest by            26-08-2013. Further, they must fulfill the minimum requirements of marks/CPI, and other conditions like valid GATE score/CEED score (as may be applicable) etc., as mentioned under eligibility criteria for respective programmes. Failure to fulfill any of these requirements, shall automatically result in cancellation of admission.


Relaxation for SC/ST/PD Candidates: Eligibility criteria will be relaxed by 5% marks or 0.5 CPI for SC/ST/PD  applicants.

Reservation of Seats for SC, ST, OBC(Non-creamy layer) and PD categories.
OBC(Non-creamy layer) candidates will have to enclose certificate and self-declaration statement as per format indicated below. The OBC(NCL) Certificate, issued by competent authority, on or after 01-09-2012, shall only be acceptable. 

Financial Support
(For regular students, who are Indian nationals)

1.   Assistantships are provided to regular students (Indian nationals) at the rate of Rs.8,000/- per month, with valid and qualifying GATE score above the prescribed cut off level for MTech programme; and valid CEED score for MDes programme . GATE/CEED score requirement is exempted for students with Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) with minimum CPI of 8.0.

2. Assistantships from external funding organizations will be available as per terms and conditions of the concerned
     funding organizations.

3. Students receiving assistantships from the Institute or from any other funding agencies, are required to     
     perform academic duties as per prevailing norms.

4. The continuation of the assistantship is subject to satisfactory performance of the assigned duties and
      satisfactory progress of the student in the MTech/MDes Programme.

5.  Financial assistantship will be for a maximum period of 2(two) years.


Application Procedure
 
First Step

Please get a print-out of the `Guideline for Filling-up Online MTech/MDes Application Form’, by visiting the concerned website given below.

Second Step

For filling-up Online Application Form, first of all, please keep ready with you the following documents (including scanned soft copies of some of the documents, as specified below, to be available in your computer or CD or Pen Drive for direct uploading). Otherwise, you may have difficulty in completing on-line submission of your application form.

(i)   A scanned soft copy of your recent coloured photograph of size more than 15 KB but less than 80 KB (4.5 cm. x 3.5 cm.) with file type jpeg or jpg or gif only, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that uploading of your coloured photograph is mandatory.

IF A SCANNED COPY OF YOUR COLOURED PHOTOGRAPH IS NOT UPLOADED, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

(ii)  A copy of your Date of Birth(DoB) Certificate (this will be required, if DoB is not mentioned in your Class X/XII Pass Certificate/Mark Sheet);

(iii) If applicable, a scanned soft copy of your Caste Certificate [including OBC(NCL) Certificate as per format prescribed below)], in image format like jpeg or jpg or gif only, of size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form. Please note that OBC(NCL) certificate should be issued by the competent authority on or after 01-09-2012.

ALSO PLEASE NOTE THAT IF YOU APPLY AS  SC/ST/OBC(NCL) CANDIDATE, BUT DO NOT UPLOAD A SCANNED COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE CASTE CERTIFICATE, YOUR CLAIM FOR CONSIDERATION UNDER RESERVATION CATEGORY MAY BE REJECTED; AND YOU MAY BE CONSIDERED UNDER GENERAL CATEGORY.

(iv)   if applicable, attested copy of your `PD’ Certificate;

(v) if applicable, the appropriate Form in original relating to candidate’s Category [Sponsored (Full-Time)/ IITG’s Project Staff/ Part-Time] - as per format prescribed below;

(vi) Scanned soft copies of (a) Pass Certificate (Original/Provisional) and (b) Consolidated Mark Sheet of the Qualifying Degree, size more than 15 KB but less than 100 KB, for direct uploading in to the Online Application Form.

If you are not in a position to upload scanned copy of your qualifying degree pass certificate due to reasons beyond your control, if called for Written Test/Interview/Counseling, you will be allowed to personally submit the same in the concerned Department on the day of Written Test/Interview/Counseling.

BUT, IF YOU HAVE ALREADY COMPLETED YOUR QUALIFYING DEGREE PROGRAMME, AND DO NOT UPLOAD SCANNED COPY OF THE CONSOLIDATED MARK SHEET, YOUR ON-LINE APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.

THOSE APPEARING IN THEIR FINAL EXAMINATION will need to scan and upload only the Mark Sheet of previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree; and this is MANDATORY.

Please note that, if called for Written Test/Interview/Counseling, the candidate will have to produce the Originals as well as Attested copies of all the documents relating to educational qualifications (from Class X onwards). This is also applicable for the result awaited candidates, except that along with other required documents they will produce Original as well as attested copies of all Mark Sheets up to the previous semester/year of the Qualifying Degree.

vii) if applicable, Original Score Card relating to your GATE/CEED.*

(viii) if applicable, attested copy of Certificates relating to your  professional experience etc..

(ix) Demand Draft : Demand Draft is NOT REQUIRED now. It will be required for a candidate only and only if he/she is called to appear in Written Test/Interview/Counseling.

In other words, if a candidate is shortlisted and called** to appear in Written Test/ Interview/Counseling, only then he/she will be required to arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC/ST/PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY GUWAHATI, payable at Guwahati.


Note:   * If you are yet to receive the original GATE/CEED Score Card, at least get the downloaded version of the same  from the concerned website.


 **  Instead of waiting to receive the call letter, you may keep on visiting and seeing updates in the website of the department in which you are applying for admission.

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU ARE NOW NOT REQUIRED TO SEND HARD COPIES OF ANY APPLICATION RELATED DOCUMENTS, INCLUDING THE DOWNLOADED ON-LINE APPLICATION FORM OR ANY DEMAND DRAFT, TO THE INSTITUTE.

IF YOU ARE SHORTLISTED AND CALLED BY THE CONCERNED ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT FOR WRITTEN TEST/INTERVIEW/COUNSELING,  THEN ONLY YOU WILL BE REQUIRED TO PERSONALLY BRING ALL SUCH DOCUMENTS IN ORIGINAL (ALONG WITH A SET OF DUPLICATE COPIES).



Third Step

Please:

(i) enter in to the zone of Online Application Form by visiting the concerned website given below; and

(ii) fill-up the Online Application Form [by going through  the `Guideline for Filling-up Online MTech/MDes Application Form’ ] and submit ( i.e. execution of `Final Submit’ function);

(iii) Upload your photo and other relevant documents as explained at points (i), (iii) and (vi) under Second Step above.

YOU CAN UPLOAD THESE DOCUMENTS ONLY AFTER SUCCESSFUL SUBMISSION OF ONLINE APPLICATION FORM [i.e. only after (not before or simultaneously) successful execution of `Final Submit’ function).


YOU ARE AGAIN REMINDED THAT UPLOADING OF DOCUMENTS AS STATED AGAINST POINTS (i), (iii) AND (vi) UNDER SECOND STEP ABOVE, ARE MANDATORY. IF YOU DO NOT COMPLY TO THIS REQUIREMENT, YOUR APPLICATION MAY BE REJECTED.


(iv) At the end of On-line Application Form for MTech programme only, there is a web link provided for applying optionally for Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) Graduate Fellowship Scheme(DGFS). This is an optional facility, and therefore   interested applicants for MTech programme only may like to visit the concerned web site and apply for the same.

If an applicant is selected for admission in to MTech programme of IIT Guwahati and simultaneously also selected for DGFS, he/she will be eligible for availing DGFS while pursuing MTech programme at IIT Guwahati.
  

Fourth Step

Please:

(a) take a print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form; and

(b) also keep a copy of your Filled-up Online Application Form saved in your computer or a CD or a Pen Drive (if the computer does not belong to you) for your future reference.


Fifth Step
After getting the print-out of your Online Application Form, you may put your signature with date on the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form.

YOU ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SEND THE SIGNED HARD COPY [DOWNLOADED COPY] OF YOUR APPLICATION FORM TO IIT GUWAHATI NOW@.

Note: @    Please note that, if you are called to appear in Written Test/Interview/ Counseling,  then only you will be required to submit (i) all these documents (including your signed and filled-up Online Application Form), PLUS (ii) the required Demand Draft in original [as explained at point (ix) under `Second Step’], in the Department in which you are applying for admission.   .

FURTHER, IF YOU ARE INTENDING TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION TO MTECH PROGRAMMES OF MORE THAN ONE DEPARTMENT, you will be required to follow the entire process COMPLETELY SEPARATELY for each of the concerned departments.

Selection

The Institute reserves the right to call a limited number of candidates for written test/interview/counseling, if required, based on performance in GATE/CEED, grades/marks in the qualifying examination, etc.

Legal Jurisdiction

The Courts at Guwahati alone shall have the jurisdiction to settle and decide all matters and disputes related to the above referred admission process, as IIT Guwahati is the organizing Institute.
