Eligibility Criteria:
Eligibility Criteria for Admission into PhD Programme:

Minimum CPI or Percentage of marks in the qualifying degree, with specific requirements for different streams, have been indicated below:

Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, Part-Time, and External categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.

PhD in Engineering:
For admission to the PhD Programme in Engineering departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences / Veterinary Sciences / Pharmacy in a relevant area with a minimum Cumulative Performance Index (CPI) of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) A candidate having MSc degree with Mathematics as a subject at bachelor’s level is also considered for admission in the Department of Civil Engineering. The candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level with consistent first class at other levels.

v) A candidate with MSc in a relevant area is also considered for admission to the Department of Biotechnology. The Candidate should have a minimum of 7.5 CPI or 70% marks in Master’s level.

vi) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

vii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BTech studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BTech and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.

PhD in Design:
For admission to the PhD Programme in Design, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Candidates having MArch / MDes degree or MTech / ME degree in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master’s degree in Applied Arts / Ergonomics / Fine Arts / Psychology / Physiology with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree in Design or Engineering / Technology in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iv) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

v) A two-year Post-graduate Diploma in Design (NID / CEPT or equivalent) with first class at Bachelor’s level.

vi) BFA (4-year professional programme, after 10+2)/GD Art (5-year programme after 10th standard) with one year professional experience, with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

vii) A regular student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her MDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 8.0 at the end of second semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her third semester of study. Such students can receive only PhD Degree.

viii) A student of IIT Guwahati who is continuing his / her BDes studies and having a minimum CPI of 6.5 at the end of sixth semester may be enrolled in the PhD programme of the Department in the beginning of his / her seventh semester of study. Such students can receive dual BDes and PhD Degree. Both the degrees will be awarded after completion of PhD degree.

PhD in Science:
For admission to the PhD Programme in Science departments, a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) Bachelor’s degree in a related area in Engineering / Technology / Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

PhD in Humanities and Social Sciences:
For admission to the PhD Programme in the department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS), a candidate must satisfy one of the following criteria:

i) Master’s degree in Arts / Commerce / Science in a relevant area with a minimum of 55% marks or equivalent.

ii) Master’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Design (from other than IITs) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% marks.

PhD in Centres:

i) Master’s Degree in Engineering / Technology / Design / Architecture / Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks.

ii) Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology / Medical Sciences in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.5 or 70% of marks.

iii) Bachelor’s degree from an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 7.0.

iv) Master’s degree in Science in a relevant area with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks.

v) Master’s degree in Social Sciences, in a relevant area, with a minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% marks, is also considered for admission to the Centre for the Environment.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MTech Programme:

Minimum CPI of 6.5 or 60% of marks or First Class in the qualifying degree, fulfilling specific requirements for different disciplines, as indicated below:

Note:
(a) All regular category candidates (except those having BTech degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
(b) Minimum experience required for Sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, and Part-Time categories of candidates, have also been indicated below.

Computer Science & Engineering:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology or equivalent in an appropriate area or MSc (Computer Science / Information Technology) or MCA from a recognized Institution and a valid GATE score in CS.

Electronics & Communication Engineering:
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or Equivalent or MSc(Electronics) and a valid GATE score in EC / EE

Mechanical Engineering:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a) `ME’ for the specializations of (i) Fluids and Thermal Engineering, and (ii) Machine Design; and
(b) `ME’ or `PI’ for the specialization of 'Computer Assisted Manufacturing' only; and
(c) `ME’ or ` Aerospace Eng.’ for the specialization of 'Computational Mechanics' only.

Civil Engineering:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area and a valid GATE score in:
(a) `CE’ for the specializations of (i) Structural Engineering, (ii) Geotechnical Engineering, (iii) Environmental Engineering, (iv) Transportation Systems Engineering;
(b) `CE’ or `AR’ for the specialization of 'Infrastructure Engineering and Management'; and
(c) `CE’ or `AG’ for the specialization of 'Water Resources Engineering and Management' only.

Chemical Engineering:
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering / Technology in an appropriate area (having Mass Transfer, Heat Transfer, Fluid Mechanics, Thermodynamics, Reaction Engineering, and Process Control, as subjects in undergraduate programme) and a valid GATE score in Chemical Engineering.

Biotechnology:
Master’s degree in Science or 4-year Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, with biology or related subjects as one of the papers at the 10+2 level or later, along with a valid GATE score in related disciplines.

Eligibility Criteria For Admission Into MDes Programme:
Minimum CPI of 6.0 or 55% of marks in the qualifying degree / diploma as indicated below:

(a) All regular category candidates (except those having BTech / BDes degrees from an IIT with a minimum CPI of 7.0) must possess a valid score of all India Common Entrance Examination for Design (CEED). For eligibility for financial assistance for regular category candidates, please see the section 'Financial Support' below.

(b) Minimum experience required for sponsored (Full-time), Self-Financed, and Part-Time categories of candidates, have been indicated below. 4-year Bachelors’ degree or equivalent in Design, Engineering, Architecture, Interior Design or a Design related field.
OR 4-year Professional Diploma in Design of NID or Professional Diploma of CEPT (5-year programme)

After getting the print-out of Online Application Form, you may:

(a) affix your passport-size photograph at the assigned portion of the print-out of your filled-up Online Application Form;

(c) enclose attested copies of all relevant documents

If a candidate is shortlisted and called to appear in Written Test and / or Interview, he / she should immediately arrange a Demand Draft for Rs.150/- (Rs.75/- for SC / ST / PD candidates), from any nationalized bank, in favour of Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, payable at Guwahati. Qualifications Required:
DM Hepatology: MD in General Medicine or Pediatrics from an Indian University recognized by the Institute or Diplomat of National Board in General Medicine / Pediatrics or any other examination approved by the Institute for this purpose from time to time.

MCh Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery: MS in General Surgery from an Indian University recognized by the Institute or Diplomat of National Board in General Surgery or any other examination approved by the Institute for this purpose from time to time.

MD-PhD: MBBS or any other recognized medical qualification included in the first or second schedule or part-II of the Schedule (other than licentiate qualifications) of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1958. Holders of educational qualifications Included in part-II of the Third Schedule should also fulfill the conditions stipulated in subsection (3) of section 13 of the Indian Medical Council Act, 1956.

PhD (Biomedical Sciences): A candidate seeking admission to the PhD course must possess at least one of the following qualifications of recognized University / Institutes:
A degree of Master of Sciences or Master's degree in any subject allied to Bio Medical Sciences with at least 60% marks or Master of Surgery or Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree or Diploma of the National Board of Examinations.
MBBS degree with a minimum of 55% aggregate marks in the professional examinations.
PDCC (Liver Transplant Anaesthesia & HPB Interventional Radiology): MD in Anesthesia or Radiology respectively from an Indian University recognized by the Institute or Diplomat of National Board in Anaesthesia or Radiology respectively any other examination approved by the Institute for this purpose from time to time.

Upper Age Limit: Forty years (as on 31st July, 2012), relaxable by 5 years for SC / ST candidates.

PhD/MSc (Engineering), Admissions 2011-2012

Applications have been invited in the prescribed form, from eligible candidates for registration for Full time / Part time research, leading to PhD / MSc (Engineering) by research degree of the Kerala University, for the July 2011 session, subject to availability of vacancies.

Eligibility:
A. Candidates to be considered eligible to apply for registration for PhD research should have:
i. Masters degree or its equivalent with not less than 55% marks
ii. Qualified in the Entrance Test conducted by Kerala University or National Eligibility Test conducted by the UGC / CSIR / ICAR / ICMR or GATE or State Level Eligibility Test conducted by the Kerala Government or Fellowship awarded by the KSCSTE or MPhil degree by research and thesis.

B. For MSc (Engineering by research), the candidate should have
i. Bachelors Degree holders in Engineering with not less than 55% marks
ii. Qualified in the GATE or Entrance Test conducted by Kerala University or State Level Eligibility Test conducted by the Kerala Government.

Relaxation of marks:
Candidates who have got a minimum of ten years of teaching experience at a College or University are eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks. However, in no cases a candidate is having less than 50% marks be granted registration.

Notwithstanding the above candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes who have secured 45% marks in Science subjects and 40% marks in Arts and Commerce subjects can apply for registration for PhD research, provided they satisfy the other eligibility requirements stipulated in this notification. Physically / visually challenged candidates are eligible for a relaxation of 5% marks for registration for research leading to PhD Degree.

Exemption from entrance test:
i. College / University teachers with seven or more years of teaching experience and candidates with DM / MCh Degree are exempted from the Entrance Test.
ii. Scientists / Engineers working in approved Research Laboratories either owned or managed by the Central / State Government or in Autonomous Research
Institutions of National Status, with seven years experience in the Grade Scientist / Engineer having two research papers published in the recognised research journals of the concerned subject approved by the Board of Studies concerned, are exempted from the PhD Entrance Test.
iii. Candidates with DBT-JRF are exempted from the PhD Entrance Test and they are permitted to register for research leading to PhD Degree in Biotechnology.
iv. Scientists / Ayurveda Doctors working in Pharmaceuticals / Hospitals / Research Centres owned by Government with 7 years experience and having 2 research papers published are exempted from the PhD Entrance Test.

Part-time registration:
Part-time PhD registration shall be restricted to regular / permanent teachers in the concerned subjects, of the Departments and affiliated Colleges of the University of Kerala.
Part-time registration is also extended to teachers who are working in substantive vacancies in Government and Aided Colleges in the State of Kerala. However, the facility of part-time PhD registration (1) in Library and Information Science is also extended to those who are working as Library Staff in the University of Kerala on regular basis with a minimum of 3 years experience, if all other conditions are satisfied and (2) in Management Studies is extended to those working in managerial position with a minimum of 3 years experience in Government and Public Sector undertakings, provided all other conditions are satisfied.

Applications for part-time registration should be accompanied by a No Objection Certificate from the appointing authority and stating that they are appointed on a regular basis in the College / Department.

How to apply
Applications and other details can be downloaded from the Web site www.keralauniversity.ac.in or can be obtained from the Section Officer, Forms Section, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram directly or by post on request with sufficiently stamped envelope and demand draft / chalan for Rs.10/-.

Duly filled in applications should be accompanied by a Chalan Receipt / Demand Draft of Rs.500/-as registration fee. All remittance made by Demand Drafts should be drawn in favour of the Finance Officer, University of Kerala, Thiruvananthapuram. The drafts drawn on SBT Branches payable at SBT Service Branch, Thiruvananthapuram and on District Co-operative Banks payable at State Co-operative Bank, Head Office Branch, Thiruvananthapuram only will be accepted from candidates residing within the State. Those residing outside the State may submit SBI drafts payable at SBI Main Branch, Thiruvananthapuram.

Candidates who select University Departments as their research centres shall send their applications to the Head of the Department concerned. Candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes shall send a copy of their application to the Registrar also. Those who select recognised Research Institutions/Departments of affiliated colleges shall send their applications to the Registrar.

The last date for submission of applications is 15.07.2011.
