Department of Economics,
University of Jammu

Admissions to MA Economics (with specialization in Public Policy) for the session 2012-14

The Department of Economics, University of Jammu is offering the two-year programme MA Economics (with specialisation in Public Policy) from the academic session 2012.

The aim of the proposed MA programme is to train economists to analyse matters that belong to the realm of Public Policy in the context of an economic framework and with the technical tools that allow for rigorous analysis. While most Masters programmes in Public Policy are interdisciplinary programmes, the MA Economics (with specialisation in Public Policy) has been designed keeping in mind that the core of Public Policy borrows heavily from economics and therefore Public Policy must be analysed in this context. Currently similar programmes are offered by very few institutes in India like IIM Bangalore, TERI University New Delhi etc.

For those who have been following the changes in the Indian Economy are aware of the problems and challenges it faces due to inadequate infrastructure, constraints on natural resources as well as the potential and actual challenges created by climate change. The nature of these challenges is often unpredictable with each challenge having its own appropriate approach.

The aim of this programme is to train economists to study those areas that often require State/Public/Community intervention. These include those areas of Economics and the Economy like the Environment, Natural Resources, Energy, Transport, Health, Education, Common Property Resources, Urban Transformation, Climate Change, etc and come up with optimal policy responses based on the traditional definition of economics (“optimal use of scarce resources.”) Increasingly, even the corporate sector finds itself confronting these problems in the course of their businesses as the State’s capacity to tackle all such problems is limited.
Those who are trained in this programme will be of use not only for Research Institutes and Think Tanks but also new forms of businesses and consultancy groups that are emerging given the nature of conditions that are to be found in a diverse country like India and companies that are entering those areas (eg infrastructure) which were hitherto monopolised by the State.

The 16-course MA Economics (with specialisation in Public Policy) is a self financing programme with 25 seats. The course fee is Rs 60,000/- apart from the other fees. While those students who have economics as one of their subjects in the UG or have passed B.Com and BBA and have appeared in the JUET 2012 in Economics will be given first preference, other B. Com, BBA and BA (with Economics) graduates may also apply.

The last date of receiving completed application forms (downloadable Application Form ) by the Department of Economics is 28/9/2012.
