Introduction
The National Institute of Epidemiology (NIE) located at Ayapakkam, Ambattur, Chennai is one of the permanent institutes of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). The Institute has vast experience in teaching basic statistics for doctors, conducting randomized controlled clinical trials, field prophylactic studies, evaluation of disease control programmes, immunization coverage surveys etc. The Institute has also been organizing various short duration training programmes for medical research workers. There is a need to train medical doctors, scientists and research investigators in proper appreciation and application of statistical methods to improve the quality of medical research and to have meaningful collaboration between them and statisticians. In this context, the Basic Course in Statistics is being conducted half yearly and also on felt- need basis.

Programme
It is proposed to conduct the 5-day basic course in statistics for this year from 5th November to 9th November 2012, at NIE, Chennai. The Course is designed for research workers engaged in medical research.

Objective
To demystify the art of statistics and to promote better understanding of the logic of various  statistical methods and their underlying concepts and to promote better understanding of basic statistics and its application in medical research.

Applicants
Medical Doctors, Scientists and/or Investigators of research projects/studies are eligible to apply.

Conduct
The Programme will consist of class- room lectures, practicals and group participatory activities.

Course Content
Day -1 Introduction to Bio–statistics, Types of data, Tabulation & Diagrams, Averages
Day -2 Variation, Probability & Normal distribution, Sampling and Data management
Day-3 Concept of significance test, Tests for proportion and means, Confidence intervals
Day-4 Analysis of variance, correlation, regression, Non-parametric tests
Day-5 Sample size determination. Appropriate choice of significance tests Group presentation

All these 4 days a separate practical session for the necessary topics and a group work activities will be carried

Faculty
Faculty will consist of experienced staff members of the Institute.

Facilities
The Institute has a well-equipped library with good collection of latest books on biostatistics, clinical trials and epidemiology. The participants will have access to a computer laboratory and internet facility in the library. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lap tops and calculators. Participants can use the canteen facilities for breakfast, lunch & tea by purchasing necessary coupons.

Number of seats
The Course will be limited to a maximum of 25 participants. The enrolment will be on the basis of first-come first-served.

Course fee
A nominal course fee of Rs. 5000/- per participant that covers the cost of course material and organizational expenses.

Support
No TA / DA will be paid by the Institute. Sponsoring organization should bear the TA / DA for the participants.

Accommodation
Outstation participants should make their own arrangements for boarding and lodging. Oncampus limited hostel accommodation is available and this will be given on the basis of first come first served of the participant’s request.

The hard copy of the same duly signed by the applicant shall be forwarded by the competent authority on or before 10-10-2012 and this should be sent to the Director, National Institute of Epidemiology (ICMR), R127, Second Main Road, Tamil Nadu Housing Board, Ayapakkam, Ambattur, Chennai – 600 077 along with a demand draft for Rs. 5000/- favoring “Director, National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai”.
