National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) 2014


National Entrance Screening Test (NEST) is a compulsory test for students seeking admission to National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CBS), Mumbai. Both NISER and UM-DAE CBS were set up by Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India in 2007. Their mandate is to train scientific manpower for carrying out cutting edge scientific research and for providing input to scientific programmes of Department of Atomic Energy and other applied science institutions in the country. The test is conducted in 45 centers across India. This brochure gives the detailed procedure for applying for the test, syllabus of the test and various dead lines.

Integrated Science Education and Research Center (ISERC), Visva Bharati, is also participating in NEST 2014 and will admit students for its Integrated MSc course from the Merit List of NEST 2014. The eligibility criteria are the same as that for NISER/ CBS and the students admitted to ISERC are also eligible for INSPIRE scholarship.

Registration opens on Jan 07, 2014, 12:00 noon.

Eligibility criteria for admission

Candidates must qualify all three eligibility criteria listed below:

• Candidates in General and OBC category should be born on or after July 22, 1994. The age limit is relaxed by 5 years for SC/ ST/ Physically Disabled (PD) candidates.

• Class XII qualifying examination should be passed in either 2012 or 2013. Candidates appearing in 2014 are also eligible. (Where only Letter Grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the respective Admission Committees will be final.)

• At least 60% marks in aggregate (or equivalent grade) in Class XII (or equivalent) examination from any recognized Board in India. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates and for Persons with Disability (PD), the minimum requirement is 55%.


FEE STRUCTURE

Male applicants:

(a) General and OBC categories : ` 700/-
(b) SC and ST categories : ` 350/-

Female applicants:

 All categories : ` 350/-

Postal charges (additional for offline application form only): ` 50/-

OFF-LINE APPLICATIONS  
Candidates opting for ‘off-line’ application should send request letter to the Chief Coordinator NEST 2014 at the ‘address of correspondence’ given above, for obtaining a printed copy of the application form. The request letter should contain full address of the candidate including PIN code. Upon receiving the request, NEST office would send an application kit which includes the application form, instructions for filling up the form, NEST 2014 brochure, syllabus for the examination, and an envelope for sending back the completed application form.

Once you receive the application kit, please do the following:
 1. Fill up the application form completely and correctly. Instruction for filling up the application form is
provided at the back of the application form. The application form carries an application number. Make
a note of the number for future references.
2. Paste one passport size photograph at the designated place
3. Sign the form at the designated place
4. Prepare a Demand Draft (DD) or pay through NEFT transfer. Details of these payments options are given below. Please follow the fee structure given in section III.
5. Provide demand draft or NEFT transfer details, whichever applicable, in the application form
6. Enclose the demand draft or part-C of the NEFT challan (as the case may be) along with the application form and send them in the envelope provided with the kit. If you choose to pay by DD, make sure you write your name and application number overleaf.
Payment instruction:

Instruction for preparing the Demand Draft:  
The demand draft should be made in the name of (drawn in favour of) NISER NEST and payable at Bhubaneswar. The draft, along with the application should reach NEST office on or before March 8, 2014.

Instruction for NEFT transfer:  
 A NEFT challan with all necessary bank details and application number is provided with the kit. Fill up the remaining fields of the challan carefully and make electronic transfer through any bank of your choice.
Retain part-B (Candidate’s copy) of the challan as a proof of payment and send the part-C (NEST office
copy) of the challan to the NEST office along with application form.

Please do not transfer money using personal net banking through direct remittance.
