Jain Vishva Bharati Institute (JVBI) : A Profile

Jain Vishva Bharati Institute is a Institute of higher learning and research blended with spirituality, which came into existence in 1991. JVBI’s avowed aim is to integrate academic knowledge and its application for evolving a new social pattern based on non-violence and peace. “Right conduct is the essence of knowledge” is the motto of the Institute. Every programme and every activity is directed towards the realisation of this motto.
The mission of the Institute is to integrate modern science with ancient wisdom given to us by great spiritual practitioners and visionary seers. The Institution seeks to interweave moral & spiritual norms and values with the mundane and economic fibers of mankind to foster and develop universal human relationships for the peaceful co-existence of individuals, groups, communities, sects, races, sexes, religions, nations and peoples. The Institute provides reverential study courses in Jainology and Comparative Philosophy & Religion; Non-violence and Peace; Science of Living, Preksha Meditation and Yoga; Prakrit and Jain Agamas; and Social Work for development of a more balanced human being and humanity.
The Understanding Jainism Programme (UJP) of the JVBI emphasizes Jain Philosophy, Ethics, Non-violence, Meditation, Art & Architecture and life-style in India. It is interdisciplinary in nature, with participating faculty of the Humanities, Social Sciences and Linguistics.

Objectives :
i. To understand the concept and ideas of Jainism.
ii. To develop understanding and attitude of nonviolence.
iii. To familiarize the participants with the philosophy of creative non-violence
in India.
iv. To impart training of Preksha Meditation for emotionally balanced life-style.
v. To establish the importance and relevance of amity for the survival of
living being.

Course Credits
The programme has Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses of 3/4 week duration. The number of credits
a student can take in this programme depends on the agreements with individual students or agreement
reached with the Institute or participating institution.

For PG Student
Studies will be carried out on the basis of sacred Jain texts of Swetambar & Digambar tradition. Texts like Acaranga, Sutrakritanga, Bhagvati, Nandi, Dasvaikalika, Tattvartha Sutra, Samayasar, Gommatsar etc.
Study text could vary depending on the need.
Special highlights of the Programme
i. Visit to places of archaeological and historical
importance in and around Ladnun.
ii. Interaction with spiritual personalities.
iii. Meditation / Yoga session (morning session).
iv. Visit to wild life sanctuary.
v. Cultural interaction with local people of the
town for better understanding of culture.
vi. Trekking

Study Tour :
A study tour of one week covering Jaipur, Pushkar, Ajmer, Jodhpur, Nakoda, Osiyaji, Bikaner etc. will be
organized for the participants. Fee $250/- per student. Date and other details are available with co-ordinator.

JVBI Campus :
The JVBI campus is alcohol and smoke free. Only vegetarian food will be served. One has to observe the
campus culture.

Facilities Provided
Boarding and Lodging arrangements for students joining the UJP will be made in the campus.

Fee Structure
For UG/PG the course fee will be US $ 500 / EU 400 and US $ 600 / EU 450 respectively. For details of the payments contact co-ordinators. The Fee paid will be non-refundable.

Indian Classical Language Orientation Programme
Keeping in view the interest of international students in the ancient and classical languages of India, a
special programme of orientation in Sanskrit, Prakrit and Hindi will be organized during the programme.
Those who will participate shall be awarded one credit. The fee of the programme will be $50 each.
Prakrit
Prakrit capsule course will be dealt broadly with the phonology and morphology. It will cover both the traditional and linguistic pattern of teaching. To understand Prakrit, the contemporary classical language Sanskrit will be compared with. Though phonology and morphology students will learn the development of ancient Indian language through out the ages beginning from the sound system with vowels and consonants, behavior of sounds etc. and parts of speech, in the morphology and construction of sentences etc. will be in the curriculum.

Sanskrit  
An introductory course on basics of Sanskrit will also be the part of programme for willing candidates consisting of vowel, pronunciation, verbs, introduction to nouns, gender, alphabetical order, halanta and conjunct consonants, special symbols, dictionary practice and exercise.

Hindi
Hindi is one of the major spoken languages in India and has a rich literature of over one thousand years and can be compared with any other developed language and literature of the world. To understand Hindi, it is necessary to have preliminary acquaintance with the structure of the language and linguistics future. This programme consists: language element, elementary linguistics and salient features of Devanagri scripts, Hindi and its subordinate languages and exercise of spoken Hindi.

Location
The Institute is located in Ladnun, a small township in the Nagaur District of Rajasthan (India),  representing the ancient Indian Gurukul tradition. Surrounded by sand dunes, it has a green leafy setting and peaceful atmosphere, which can make a person forget the hustle and bustle of cities and tensions of a busy industrial life. Ladnun is 380 Kms. west of Delhi, the Capital city of India, and 215 Kms. North West of Jaipur, which is known as the Pink City and the Capital of the State of Rajasthan. It is well served by deluxe and express bus services from Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Udaipur, Delhi and other cities. The nearest airports are Jaipur and Jodhpur.
