Eligibility Criteria
 Stream SA: Students enrolled in the XI Standard (Science subjects) during the academic year 2014 – 15 and have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/ & PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board Examination.
 Stream SX: Students enrolled in XII Standard (+2) [Science subjects] during the academic year 2014-15 and aspiring to join an undergraduate program in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./ B.Math/Int. M.Sc./M.S.) for the session 2015-16 provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/ & PWD) marks in aggregate in MATHEMATICS and SCIENCE subjects in the X Standard Board Examination.
 Stream SB: Students enrolled in the 1st year of B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math/Int. M.Sc./M.S. during the academic year 2014-15 and have secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/ & PWD) marks in aggregate in SCIENCE subjects in the XII Standard (+2) Board Examination.

HOW TO APPLY:



Applications have been invited by the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, for the award of fellowships under the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science.

The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue career in research. This program aims to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. A core committee looks after both the day-to-day and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.

Eligibility: Only Indian Nationals only to Studying in India are eligible for the fellowship. Those holding PIO, OCI Card and students intending to pursue/pursing under graduate program under Distance Education scheme/correspondence course of any university are not eligible to apply.

Students enrolled in an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, such as B.Sc./B.S./B.Statistics/B.Mathematics/Integrated M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science are eligible for the fellowships.

Fellowships are given under three streams.
Stream SA: Students studying Science subjects in Class XI during 2014-15 and having secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in Class X Board examination can apply under the SA stream. The fellowship of the students selected under this stream will be activated only if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences (B.Sc./B.S./B.Statistics/B.Mathematics/Integrated M.Sc./M.S.) in the academic year 2016-2017 after securing a minimum of  60% (50%for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects in Class XII/(+2) Board Examination. During the interim period of one year they will be invited for Regional /National (Vijyoshi) Science Camp and their travel and other related expenses will be met by KVPY.

Stream SX: Those who have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class X Board Examination and now studying Class XII/ (+2) during 2014–15 in Science subjects, aspiring to join undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics/Biology leading to  B.Sc./ B.S./ B.Statistics/B.Mathematics / Integrated M.Sc./ M.S. during 2015–16, after securing a minimum of  60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in Class XII Board Examination can apply under SX stream.

Students in their 2nd year of study in Cambridge International Examination Board and aspiring to join an UG program (viz. B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.)in Basic Sciences namely Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and Biology in the Academic year 2015-2016 are eligible to apply provided they have secured a minimum of 80% (70% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology) in the X Standard Board Examination. They must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects (Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology) in the XII standard Board Examination before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

Stream SB: Students enrolled in the 1st year of undergraduate program in Basic Sciences namely Physics/Chemistry/Mathematics & Biology leading to   B.Sc./B.S./B.Statistics/B.Mathematics/Integrtaed M.Sc./M.S. during the academic year 2014–15 and having secured a minimum of 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/Chemistry/Biology/Mathematics)  in the XII Standard Board Examination can apply in this stream. In the 1st year final examination of B.Sc./B.S./B.Math./B.Stat./Int. M.Sc./M.S. they must secure 60% (50% for SC/ST/PWD) marks before taking up the fellowship, if awarded.

A certain number of additional fellowships exclusively for the students belonging to SC/ST community and also for students under the category of Persons with Disability (Physically and Visually Challenged) will also be operated.

Selection Procedure: There will be an Aptitude Test, as part of the selection process. It will be held in the offline mode as well as the online mode. The online version of the KVPY aptitude test 2014 will be held at Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Pune.

The offline version of the aptitude test will be held at various cities across the country. The complete list of cities will be available in the online application system.

After scrutiny of application forms and meeting the eligibility criteria for various streams, all eligible students will be called for a written aptitude test conducted both in Hindi and English at different centers across the country on Sunday, the 2nd November 2014. The details of the venue of the aptitude test for the eligible students and their seat number will be published in the KVPY website during the second week of October 2014.

Admit Card: Students who have applied online may download the admit card for the aptitude test from the website from the second week of October 2014. For students who have applied with a hard copy, admit card will be sent by speed post.
Interview: Based on the performance in the aptitude test, short-listed students will be asked to appear for an interview which is the final stage of the selection procedure.

Application can be submitted online or offline.
Offline Application: Those who wish to apply offline should first obtain the KVPY application from. They should remit the application fee of Rs. 500/- at any branch of State Bank of India to ‘Bank Account Number: 10270577392, Indian Institute of Science, KVPY, State Bank of India, Indian Institute of Science 02215, IFS Code: SBIN00002215’ using a Bank challan/pay-in-slip given in the website. After this, they should request a hard copy of the application form by writing to ‘The Convener, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore-560 012’, sending the original copy of the Bank challan/pay-in-slip that reflects the payment of the Application Fee along with the request letter. Application Fee is waived for students belonging to SC/ST category and Persons with disabilities (Physically & visually challenged) students. Applicant must enclose the relevant certificates (Caste/PWD) along with the request letter in case the applicant belongs to SC/ST or PWD category. The last date for request of the Application form By Post is 28th August, 2014.

On receipt of the request letter with supporting enclosures (original Bank challan/Pay-in-slip & Caste/PWD certificate (as the case may be)), KVPY will send a hard copy of the application form by speed post. It is to be completed and returned with supporting documents.

Online Application: Application can be submitted online through the ‘Application 2014’ link at www.kvpy.org.in  latest by 8th September 2014.
Applicants should go to the link ‘Apply online’ there. When entering this link for the 1st time, the applicant will be prompted to complete the Registration process which may be done by following the instructions given, to receive a ‘User ID’ and ‘Password’ credentials for logging in. A registered user, who has received the user ID and Password on his/her registered E-mail and/or Mobile No can use the credentials for logging in. The submission of the final application has to be completed in three stages- submitting the Personal details, submitting the Academic details and making Payment and declaration.

Payment can be made online or offline. For online payment, applicant will be guided to the Payment Gateway for making payments with Credit Card/ Debit Card/ Net Banking. Applicant will receive Transaction ID for the successful transaction, which must be preserved for future correspondence.

For Offline Payment, applicant may use the uniquely generated Challan form the website and make payment in any listed branch of State Bank Branches. Application number and Challan number will be the same for an applicant.  He/she should use the correct challan to make the payment in case of multiple registrations. (a) Name of the candidate, (b) Application No, (c) Stream code, (d) Email id, (e) Mobile No and (f) Nationality are non-editable and cannot be changed. In case you have the need to change any of the above personal details you will have to fill a fresh registration form.

On the main page click on apply online and use the credentials to log in to  one’s saved application, click on the edit button (On the right hand top corner) go to the Payment & Declaration tab and update the Bank, Branch, Journal details and upload the scanned copy of Paid Challan.

The completed application form in case of offline applicants and the printout of the online application in case of online applicant along with all other supporting documents should reach KVPY office latest by 8th September 2014. Fellowship Amount: A student is eligible to receive KVPY Fellowship up to pre-PhD level or 5 years whichever is earlier. Those selected will get a monthly fellowship amounting to Rs.5000/- during 1st to 3rd years of B.Sc./B.S./B.Statistics/B.Mathematics/ Integrated M.Sc. /M.S. and an annual contingency grant of Rs. 20000/-

The amount of fellowship will be Rs. 7000/- during  M. Sc. / 4th to 5th years of Integrated M.Sc. /M.S./M.Mathematics/M.Statistics. The annual contingency grant during this period will be Rs. 28000/-

Renewal/Continuation of fellowship: Annual renewal of fellowships will depend on the KVPY Fellows maintaining a good academic performance of first class (60% marks) or equivalent grade point average (50% or equivalent grade point average for SC/ST/PWD)  in science subjects in aggregate in each academic year in the first attempt. Students who fail to secure 60% marks or equivalent grade in a year (50% or equivalent grade for SC/ST/PWD) will forfeit the fellowship. However, in the subsequent year if they get 60% marks or equivalent CGPA (50% or equivalent CGPA for SC/ST/PWD) on aggregate over all the previous years, the fellowship will be renewed from that year.

In addition to the above, participation and satisfactory performance in the Summer Camp in the first year and Summer project every year thereafter is required for renewal of the fellowship.

KVPY Fellows who opt out of the basic science (B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S.) stream at any stage will forfeit the Fellowship and Contingency Grant forthwith.

The fellowship for the students selected under the stream SA/SX/SB will be started after the XII Standard/ (+2) / I year UG, only if they pursue an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that are, B.Sc./B.S./B.Stat./B.Math./Int. M.Sc./M.S. in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Materials Science, Environmental Science or Geophysics.

Summer program: Summer program which forms a part of the nurture program for the KVPY Fellows are meant to expose the Fellows to methods of scientific search and inculcate in them an abiding interest in doing scientific research. These are normally organized during the summer vacation, when KVPY Fellows spend one or two weeks in scientific institutions listening to lectures by experts in different fields of Basic Sciences and other related subjects, observe things in a research environment, science in action, watch scientists at work, interact with scientists, visit nearby scientific research laboratories and institutions, exchange views and interact with other research students. Sometimes Fellows with specific interest are associated with individual scientists who talk to them about their interest, help them clear their doubts, give them problem to work on, let them do experiments, and tell them about the future scope in the area of their interest.

Summer Program for the KVPY Fellows is arranged at the Indian Institute for Science Education and Research (IISER) at Kolkata, Pune, Mohali, Bhopal, and Trivandrum for a week.

Other Privileges: Each KVPY Fellow will be issued an Identity Card so as to have access to National Laboratories/ Universities who have agreed to extend special privileges like library, laboratory facilities, etc. to KVPY Fellows on production of the ID card.
