Master of Science in Quality Systems in Dairy Processing
Now a day, the consumers are very much concerned about the safety of milk and milk products and the condition under which these are produced. Chemical and Microbiological safety plays a very significant role in the quality control of milk & dairy products world wide. Food borne illness associated with milk & dairy products consumption recently has been found to be a common problem. Presence of micro organisms in milk and milk products constitute public health hazards. Contamination of milk with pathogenic bacteria is largely due to unhygienic conditions in production and handling. Another potential area which causes risk to the consumers is antibiotic and elementary xenobiotic residues in milk & milk products. Application of HACCP system in dairy industry in order to maintain high quality of foods for safe consumption has increased the requirements for rapid and automated microbiological techniques. This post graduate course is designed to generate qualified persons to handle the emerging needs in Quality control sector in Dairy Industry. This course aims to provide information about chemical and microbiological contaminants in milk, rapid detection techniques and application of HACCP system on the food contaminants and Implementation of a regular toxicological control management program for bulk milk supply and to the Dairy product manufacturing sector to efficiently identify toxic sources and remove them in due time. The course will further equip the students and open up opportunities to undertake career in Quality management of food products, as supporting staff for teaching, research etc.

Master of Science in Wildlife Studies
The concern for conservation of wild life in situ and in captivity has increased globally over the years. This has increased the demand for trained personnel with sufficient practical exposure to manage real life situations involving free ranging and captive wildlife. A post-graduate course for bioscience graduates is the requirement of the day which can be pivotal in acting as a turning point for those who would like to turn from the mainstream towards the fast growing field of wildlife conservation and management. CVAS, Pookode, is located in Wayanad district, which consists of a unique geographical region naturally blessed with varieties of wild flora and fauna. A major part of the district consists of reserved forest areas and parts of the Niligiri Biosphere Reserve, identified by the UNESCO as a biodiversity hotspot of international importance. The location of the well equipped institute in this forest rich district of Kerala makes it the ideal place for development in the wildlife study sector and for the conduct of specialized wildlife related academic programmes like MS (Wildlife Studies).

This post graduate course is designed to generate qualified persons to handle the emerging needs in applied biochemistry. Students undergoing this course will understand the scientific basics of the life processes at the molecular level. It will orient them towards the applications of the knowledge acquired to organize biochemical analysis of organs/tissues. Besides, the programme will help to develop competence and skills to organize and conduct research. Their knowledge on instrumentation will aid in the handling of modern sophisticated equipments. Understanding molecular biology tools will help in the diagnosis, prevention and control of diseases. It will also lead to the augmentation of production and synthesis of biological products for improving health and treatment of diseases. Molecular biology tools also play an important role in the detection of food pathogens and thereby help to maintain food safety and security. The course will further equip the students and open up opportunities to undertake career in teaching, research and in diagnostic laboratories/institutions.

Diploma in Poultry Production
Among various agriculture-related activities, poultry sector is the one with the highest annual growth rate. In spite of higher output of the sector in India, per capita consumption of eggs and poultry meat is one of the lowest. Eggs and poultry meat supply high quality protein at cheaper costs compared to other protein sources. These products have a huge potential to alleviate food and nutritional insecurity of people. In this context, skilled human resource becomes essential for the growth of this sector, both as managers in the industry as well as self-employed entrepreneurs. The course “Diploma in Poultry Production” is uniquely designed to impart basic theoretical knowledge and reasonable practical experience in all aspects of poultry farming, namely layer production, broiler production, quail farming and other avian species management. The degree holders are expected to pursue viable poultry-business activities.

Eligibility

Diploma in Laboratory Techniques
Laboratory technology is concerned with the diagnosis of diseases through the use of clinical laboratory tests. A qualified laboratory technician plays a vital role in collecting the information needed, sampling, testing, reporting and documentation of these investigations. The results determine the presence, extent or absence of disease and provide data needed to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment. In the light of emerging and re-emerging diseases in animals and human beings along with the zoonotic and vector borne nature of many pathogens, an increasing demand for timely and accurate disease diagnosis is the need of the hour. There exist a wide gap between the growing need and existing facility in this field both in terms of quality and quantity. Therefore a key focus should be placed on providing technically competent personnel in the area of laboratory technology useful for animal/human laboratory analysis.
In order to obtain reliable and accurate results for laboratory tests, a sound theoretical knowledge and good practical skill on laboratory techniques is inevitable. The course will be a collaborative effort of three major disciplines like Parasitology, Pathology and Public health. It will comprise of elaborate theory classes, hands on practical and demonstration classes on collection, preservation and dispatch of clinical samples, handling of microscopes and other equipments, preparation of glassware/media, assistance to postmortem examination, detection of pathogens, analysis of blood and urine, examination procedures of clinical samples, preparation of reagents and solutions. Moreover the use of advanced disease diagnostic equipments necessitates a familiarity in proper handling and care.
The Diploma course in laboratory techniques also intends to impart advanced skills to mould practicing laboratory professionals to excel in quality disease diagnosis to serve as an integral part of country’s health care system.
