PhD /M.Tech /M.S.(Research) Admission Notice 2015

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Ropar has invited applications for PhD /M.Tech /M.S.(Research) programs in various disciplines for 1st semester of academic year 2015-2016.

I. COURSES AND ELIGIBILITY:
 A. Ph.D
(1) Computer Science and Engineering:
Eligibility Criteria: M.Tech./M.E/M.S. or equivalent qualification in computer science and engineering or equivalent degree with 60% marks (or 6.5 grade point out of 10) (55% marks for SC/ST). However, exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.

A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification.

Areas of Research: Activity Recognition, Pattern Recognition, Machine Learning, Pervasive and Mobile Computing, Pervasive Health Care, Assistive and Rehabilitative Technology, Cyber-Physical systems, Sensor Networks, Participatory Sensing, Wireless Networks, Energy Management.

(2) Electrical Engineering:
Eligibility Criteria: Minimum Grade Point Average of 6.5/10 or 60% of marks in, M.E./M.Tech/M.S. in Electrical/ Electronics /Comm- unications/Computer Science/Instrumentation Engineering or equivalent or Microelectronics/Solid-state Technology/MEMS/Nano Science/Nano Technology/Material Science/Engineering Physics or equivalent, relevant to the area of research are eligible to apply.

Areas of Research: 1. Renewable Energy, 2. Mixed Signal Analog and RF VLSI Circuits and Systems, 3. Semiconductor Devices and Nanoelectroincs, 4. Image and Video Processing.

(3) School of Mechanical, Materials and Energy Engineering:

Eligibility Criteria:
1. Master's degree in Engineering/Technology or a Master's degree by Research in Engineering/Technology. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's.
 OR
2. Master's degree in Sciences with a valid score in GATE/UGC/CSIR/NET/NBHM or equivalent qualification. Candidates must have obtained at least 60% marks (or 6.5 Grade Point out of 10) in their Master's.
 OR
3. Exceptional candidates having B.Tech/B.E qualification with valid GATE score can apply for direct admission to PhD programme.
A candidate with a Bachelor's degree from any IIT and having a CGPA/CPI score of 8.00 (out of 10.0) and above are exempted from requirement of GATE qualification to apply.

Areas of Research: Bio-Medical (BM), Design & Analysis (DA), Manufacturing & Materials (MM), Thermo-Fluid (TF)

(4) Sciences:
(a) Chemistry:
Eligibility Criteria:     First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Masters or equivalent degree in Chemistry/Bio-Chemistry/Materials Science and Technology/ Pharmaceutical Sciences/Biotechnology.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:
a)      Valid GATE Score.
b)      UGC/CSIR-NET qualification or equivalent qualification.
c)      DST-INSPIRE fellowship.

Area of Research: Electronic Structure Calculations, Quantum Dynamics, Nanomaterials, Electrocatalysis, FuelCell/Batteries, Catalysis and Materials Synthesis, Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Homogeneous Catalysis, Polymeric biomaterials for Drug Delivery, Inorganic and Organometallic Chemistry and Supramolecular Organic Synthesis.

(b) Mathematics:
Eligibility Criteria:     First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in Master?s Degree in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Physical Sciences, Engineering Sciences or equivalent Master?s Degree.

Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:
a)      Valid GATE score.
b)      UGC/CSIR NET qualified or NBHM or equivalent qualification.
c)      DST-INSPIRE Fellowship.
Areas of Research: All areas of Pure & Applied Mathematics.

(c) Physics:
Eligibility Criteria: First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in M.Sc. in Physics/B.Tech. in Engineering Physics.
Candidates meeting this requirement must also fulfill one of the following additional requirements tenable for current year:
a)      Valid GATE score.
b)      UGC/CSIR NET qualification.
C)     DST-INSPIRE Fellowship.
 OR
A First Class (6.5 grades point out of 10) or 60% marks (55% marks for SC/ST) in M. Tech. Candidates meeting this requirement must also have cleared GATE examination at any point of time in their career.

Areas of Research: Nuclear Structure and Neutrino Physics, Experimental Nuclear Physics, Condensed Matter/Nano-Physics, Nonlinear Laser Spectroscopy and Biophotonics.

(d) Humanities and Social Sciences
Eligibility Criteria: 55% (or 6 grade point out of 10) in Master's or equivalent degree in Cognitive Science,Economics, English Literature or Linguistics with UGC-NET or valid score in GATE.

The candidates must be interested in working in the research areas/subjects mentioned below. Candidates interested in interdisciplinary research, in the relevant areas of research mentioned below can also apply.

Areas of Research:
(1) English Literature: American Studies, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, Modern Fiction, Postcolonial Studies.
(2) Linguistics: Morphology, Optimality Theory, and Phonology, Psycho/Neurolinguistics, Language and Cognition
(3) Economics: Applied Econometrics, Open Economy Macroeconomics, International Economics and Finance, Industrial and Urban Economics, Economic Geography and Regional Spillover.

*In the area of Linguistics, applicants with only external funding (JRF etc.) will be considered.

B.  M.Tech:
Eligibility Criterion:
B.Tech / B.E. in relevant area.

C: M.Sc. / M.S.:
Eligibility:
Chemistry:  B.Sc. or equivalent degree with Chemistry
Mathematics: B.Sc. / B.Tech.
Physics : B.Sc .(Physics with Mathematics/Statistics)
Computer Science & Engineering : B.Tech/ B.E/ M.Sc/ MCA in  Computer science and allied branches with valid GATE score
Electrical Engineering : Minimum Grade Point Average of 6.5/10  or 60% of marks in Bachelor?s degree in  Electrical Engineering (Electrical and
Electronics Engineering)/ Electronics  Engineering(Electronics & Communication Engineering/ Computer Science & Engineering or equivalent related to the
area of research, with a valid GATE score are eligible to apply. IIT B.Tech degree holders with a CGPA  score of 8.0 or above on a scale of 10 [SC/ST: 7.5 CGPA] are also eligible to apply even without GATE score.
