Combined Defence Services Examination CDS (I), 2012
Including SSC Women (Non-Technical) Course


Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2012 (Including SSC Women (Non-Technical) Course), conducted by the Union Public Service Commission, will be held on 12th February, 2012 for admission to the following courses with the tentative vacancies given in brackets.

(i) 134th Course commencing in January, 2013 (including 32 vacancies reserved for NCC ‘C’ Certificate (Army Wing) holders) at the Indian Military Academy, Dehradun (250 vacancies)
(ii) Executive (Hydro/General Service) Course Commencing in January 2013, (including 6 vacancies reserved for NCC 'C' Certificate holders (Naval Wing) at Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala (40 vacancies)
(iii) 193rd F(P) Course)- Pre-Flying Training Course commencing in January, 2013 at Air Force Academy, Hyderabad (32 seats)
(iv) 97th SSC Course (for Men) commencing in April, 2013 at Officers Training Academy, Chennai (175 seats)
(v) 11th SSC Women (Non-Technical) Course commencing in April, 2013 at Officers Training Academy, Chennai (30 seats)

Admission to the courses will be made on the results of the written examination to be conducted by the Commission at Agartala, Aizwal, Allahabad, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bareilly, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cuttack, Dehradun, Delhi, Dharwad, Dispur, Gangtok, Hyderabad, Imphal, Itanagar, Jaipur, Jammu, Jorhat, Kochi, Kohima, Kolkata, Lucknow, Madurai, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji (Goa), Patna, Port Blair, Raipur, Ranchi,Sambalpur, Shillong, Shimla, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Tirupati, Udaipur, and Vishakhapatnam, followed by Intelligence and Personality test by the Services Selection Board for candidates who qualify in the written examination.

Applicant must be a Citizen of India with exceptions as specified in the Notification.

For entry into IMA, applicants should be unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1989 and not later than 1st January, 1994.

For Indian Naval Academy, applicants should be unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1991 (2nd January, 1989 in case of NCC Naval Wing ‘C’ Certificate holders) and not later than 1st January, 1994.


For Air Force Academy, applicant should be unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1990 and not later than 1st January, 1994.

For Officers' Training Academy- (SSC Course for Men) only Male candidates (married or unmarried) born not earlier than 2nd January, 1988 and not later than 1st January, 1994, are eligible.

For Officers Training Academy-(SSC Women Non-Technical Course), unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1988 and not later than 1st January, 1994.

Educational Qualifications:

(i) For I.M.A. and Officers’ Training Academy applicant should hold a Degree of a recognised University or equivalent.
(ii) For Indian Naval Academy, applicant should have a Degree in Engineering for CDSE and Degree in Engineering or B.Sc. (with Physics or Mathematics) for NCC entry.
(iii) For Air Force Academy, applicant should have a Degree of a recognised University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or should be a Bachelor of Engineering. Graduates with first choice as Army/Navy/Air Force have to submit proof of graduation provisional certificates on the date of commencement of the SSB Interview at the SSB.

Candidates who are studying in the final year Degree course and have yet to pass the final year Degree examination can also apply, subject to submission of proof of passing the Degree examination to the concerned office on or before the dated as specified in the Notification.

Candidates possessing Professional and Technical qualifications which are recognised by government as equivalent to Professional and Technical Degrees are also be eligible for admission to the examination.

Physical Standards: Candidates must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2012 as per guidelines given in the Notification.

Fee: Female/SC/ST candidates are exempted from payment of fee. Others have to pay a fee of Rs. 100/- either by remitting the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

Application: Application can be submitted online only at http://www.upsconline.nic.in.


Online Applications can be filled up to 11.59 pm on 28th November, 2011, after which, the link will be disabled.

Detailed instructions for filling up Online Applications are available at the website. Only one application should be submitted by a person. However, if he/she submits another/multiple applications, due to any unavoidable situation, then he/she must ensure that application with the higher RID is complete in all respects. In case of multiple applications, the application with higher RID (Registration ID) will be entertained by the Commission. Fee paid against one RID will not be adjusted against any other RID.

An applicant should clearly specify in the concerned column of the Online Application, the Services for which he/she wishes to be considered in the order of his/her preference.

A male candidate is advised to indicate as many preferences as he wishes to, subject to the condition given below. Since women candidates are eligible for OTA only, they should give OTA as their first and only preference.

A male candidate is competing for Short Service Commission (Army) only, should indicate OTA as the one and only choice. However, a male candidate competing for Short Service Commission Course at OTA as well as permanent commission course at IMA, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy should indicate OTA as his last preference. If it is not recorded as the last choice, OTA will be deemed to be the last choice even if it is given a higher preference by the candidate.

Those desirous of joining Air Force Academy must indicate AFA as their first choice, as they have to be administered Pilot Aptitude Battery Test at one of the AFSB and AF Medical at Central Medical Establishment/Institute of Aviation Medicines. Choice exercised for AFA as second/third etc. will be treated as invalid.

Applicants except as specifically provided in the notification will be considered for appointment only to those courses for which they exercise their preference and for no other course(s). Request for addition/alteration in the preferences already indicated by a candidate in his/her application will not be entertained by the Commission. Second choice will come for consideration only when the first choice is not offered to the candidate by Services HQ. When first choice is offered and a candidate declines the same, his/her candidature will be cancelled for all other choices for regular commission.

Those who are recommended by the UPSC for grant of permanent commission on the basis of the final results of the Examination, but who could not be inducted on these courses for any reason whatsoever may be considered for grant of SSC even if they have not indicated their choice for this course in their applications, if they are subsequently willing to be considered for this course subject to certain conditions, details of which are given in the Notification.

Candidates with Air Force as first and only choice, failing in the Pilot Aptitude Battery Test, but desirous of being considered for SSC (OTA) should exercise their option for OTA also.

NCC ‘C’ Certificate (Army Wing/Senior Division Air Wing/Naval Wing) holders may also compete for the vacancies in the Short Service Commission Course but since there is no reservation of vacancies for them in this course, they will be treated as general candidates for the purpose of filling up vacancies in this course.

Candidates who have yet to pass NCC ‘C’ Certificate (Army Wing/Senior Division Air Wing/Naval Wing) examination, but are otherwise eligible to compete for the reserved vacancies, may also apply but they will be required to submit the proof of passing the NCC ‘C’ Certificate latest by 13th November, 2012. Details are given in the Notification. To be eligible to compete for reserved vacancies the candidates should have served for not less than two academic years in the Senior Division Army Wing and three academic years in the Senior Division Air Wing/Naval Wing of National Cadet Corps and should not have been discharged from the NCC for more than 24 months for IMA/Indian Naval Academy/Air Force Academy courses on the last date of receipt of Application in the Commission’s Office.

Candidates should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.

Scheme of Examination: The Written examination for admission to Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Air Force Academy, will have three papers (i) English (ii) General Knowledge and (iii) Elementary Mathematics, each of 2 hours duration and each carrying 100 marks. For Admission to Officers’ Training Academy, the written examination will have 2 papers (i) English and (ii) General Knowledge, each of 2 hours duration and each carrying 100 marks.

All papers will have objective type questions only. The question papers (Test Booklets) of General Knowledge and Elementary Mathematics will be set bilingually in Hindi as well as English. Candidates are not permitted to use calculator for answering objective type papers. They should not therefore, bring the same inside the Examination Hall.

The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level. The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be expected of a graduate of an Indian University. For English, the questions will be designed to test the candidates’ understanding of English and workmanlike use of words. The paper on General Knowledge will have questions to test the knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which candidate should be able to answer without special study.

The syllabus for the paper on Elementary Mathematics is given at http://upsconline.nic.in/CDSI-2012-E.pdf. It will have questions from Arithmetic, Algebra, Trigonometry, Geometry, Mensuration and Statistics. Each Question will have four alternatives as answers. For each question for which a wrong answer has been given by the candidate, one third (0.33) of the marks assigned to that question will be deducted as penalty.

If a candidate gives more than one answer, it will be treated as a wrong answer even if one of the given answers happens to be correct and there will be same penalty as above for that question. If a question is left blank i.e. no answer is given by the candidate, there will be no penalty for that question. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the subjects of the examination.

Those called for the interview will have to take the Intelligence Tests both verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks, and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects, aimed at judging the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment of not only his/her intellectual qualities but also his/her social traits and interests in current affairs.

The maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be 300, 300, 300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers’ Training Academy respectively.

A Candidate recommended by the Services Selection Board will undergo a medical examination by a Board of Service Medical Officers. Commission will be granted only on successful completion of training. The date of commission will be that following the date of successful completion of training.
