Eligibility Detail:

Applicants for the degree course should have passed the Higher Secondary Examination (XII Std.,) under the 10 + 2 pattern prevalent in Tamil Nadu or its equivalent from other Universities or Boards.

Candidates, who pass the All India Senior School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi, will be eligible for admission, provided they pass the examination with a minimum of five subjects of which English shall be compulsory. An applicant should provide an eligibility certificate, from the University of Madras at the time of interview.

Candidates for the M.Com Degree should have passed B.Com., B.B.M., B.A.(Cooperation), BA(Business Economics), B.A (Industrial Organisation ) or B.Sc. (Maths) with Accountancy and Costing or Banking as allied papers scoring 50% and above in courses other than B.Com.

English is the medium of instruction for all the courses of study. Only Hindi and Tamil are offered under First Language. All courses are under the semester pattern prescribed by the University of Madras.

 Applications are invited for admission to Department of Physics, University of Calcutta (92 Acharyya Prafulla Chandra Road, Kolkata 700009) for Ph.D. Course and subsequent research work leading to Ph.D degree in Physics. The filled-in application form, along with the challan, should be submitted to the Office, Department of Physics, definitely by June 25, 2014. The eligible candidates will have to appear in a written MCQ-type examination of 1 hour duration to be held in this Department on June 30, 2014 at 11-00 hr. The syllabus of this examination is the Physics M.Sc. syllabus of this University excluding Elective and Advanced Papers. The successful candidates will be called for an interview on June 30, July 3 and 4, 2014. The final selection for joining this Department as a Ph.D. student will be on the basis of this interview.

The number of Ph.D. students that will be taken this time is at the most 14 (fourteen), if found suitable, including reservations as per existing rules. The allocation of supervisor will also be on the basis of this interview (see CU website for the areas on which research is carried on here).

Candidates who have already passed UGC/ CSIR(JRF) Examinations/ NET/ SET/ SLET/ GATE/

Teacher Fellowship or equivalent examinations or passed the M.Phil./M.Tech or equivalent examination need not appear at the written examination, but have to appear at the interview.

Candidates who are studying in the final semester of the qualifying examination and have cleared

all the papers upto 3rd semester can also apply. Final marksheet showing that the candidate has indeed passed that qualifying examination should be produced at the time of joining the Ph.D.

The candidates having final degree of M.E./M.Tech. , B.Tech. and M.C.A. are to apply for enrollment in the Ph.D. (Tech.) program and the candidates having the final degree of M.Sc. has to enroll for the Ph.D. (Sc.) program.

M.C.A. candidates applying for Ph. D. Tech. program would have to follow the same rules applicable for B. Tech./B.E. Candidates for registration.

Age, Qualifications and experience requirement for

Boiler Attendant of the Second Class: A candidate for a certificate of competency as a Boiler Attendant of the Second Class shall not be less than eighteen years of age and has passed matriculation or equivalent examination from a recognized institution of board has served for not less than two years, in the capacity of a Fireman or Operator or an Assistant Fireman or Assistant Operator on a steam boiler; or has served for not less than three years as a fitter where boilers are manufactured or erected, operated or repaired. Out of this he should have served as Assistant Fireman for at least one year; or must have served for not less than two years on small industrial boilers, in case of Industrial Training Institutes certificate holder.

Boiler Attendant of the Second Class: A candidate for a certificate of competency as a Boiler Attendant of the first class shall not be less than twenty years of age and he possesses a certificate of the second class and has served for not less than two years, as boiler attendant with second class certificate of competency as sole charge of a boiler whose rated heating surface is not less than fifty square meters; or produces from the head of an industrial or technical institution, a certificate stating that he has completed a three years course of training, one year of which must have been as an apprentice in a steam power plant of mill or a factory or an engineering workshop where engines and boilers are repaired or made and in addition has served for not less than one year as sole working charge of a boiler of not less than fifty square meters of heating surface with Second Class Boiler Attendant certificate of competency; or has worked for not less than two years as Fireman or Assistant Fireman with Second Class Boiler Attendant Certificate of competency under the charge of First Class Boiler Attendant on boiler having heating surface of more than fifty square meters.

A deprivation score of 0.4 prescribed by the Government for the year 2014-15 under Statute 13 (3), shall be added to the 10th class GPA of applicants from non-residential Government Schools including the Zillaparishad and Municipal Schools for selection, with the objective of providing weightage to the socio economically challenged students for admission.  

The university reserves the right to change or modify the admission policy if any as per the Government Guidelines issued from time to time.
