Raja
Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore
Ph.D.
programme 2013
(RRCAT-Ph.D.
Programme-2013)
Invitation to pursue Ph.D.
programme in specialized areas of Physics, Chemistry, and Life Sciences at the
Raja Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology, Indore.
Raja
Ramanna Centre for Advanced Technology (RRCAT), Indore, was founded in 1984 by
the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) for pursuit of R&D in the areas of
Accelerators, Lasers and related technologies. Since then, the Centre has set
up two Synchrotron Radiation Sources : Indus-1 & Indus-2, which are
national research facilities, and many smaller accelerators for radiation
processing applications. The Centre has excellent cryogenic facilities as well
as state-of-the-art equipments for low temperature physics measurements. A
variety of laser systems, particularly high power lasers, have been built and
are being used for a wide range of applications. These include gas lasers (like
copper vapour lasers, CO2 lasers), solid state lasers (like diode pumped solid
state lasers and semiconductor lasers) for the studies in the areas like
biomedical applications of lasers and laser-plasma interaction. The Centre also
has long standing programmes in the areas of RF-superconductivity,
low-temperature physics, material science, cold atom physics, non-linear
optics, opto-electronics, nano-science etc.
RRCAT
is a Constituent Institute of the "Homi Bhabha National Institute"
(HBNI), a Deemed University, and invites students with appropriate
qualifications to pursue Ph.D. programme in various specialized areas of
physics, chemistry and life sciences, listed above. As per the rules of HBNI,
the Ph.D. programme consists of course work of one year duration followed by
research work of up to 4 years duration. The Ph.D. 2013 programme will commence
on Aug.1, 2013. DAE Junior Research Fellowships will be offered to those selected
for the pursuit of Ph.D. The fellowship amount is Rs.16,000/- per month for the
first two years and Rs.18,000/- per month for the subsequent years, subject to
satisfactory yearly progress.
Eligibility:
Qualification :
For
Physics candidates : M.Sc. degree in Physics with a minimum of 60% overall
marks, and who have cleared Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST 2013) and/or
CSIR-UGC NET in 2012 (JRF, not lecturership).
For
Chemistry and Life Sciences candidates : M.Sc. degree with minimum 60% overall
marks, in Chemistry or Life Sciences, and who have cleared joint CSIR-UGC Net
in 2012 (JRF, not lecturership), are eligible to apply. Candidates with M.Sc.
in botany /agricultural science should
not apply.
Those
applicants who are completing the qualifying degree in summer of 2013 can also
apply, provided they have minimum of 60% overall marks in the completed
semesters. In the event of their selection, the final degree mark sheet would
have to be submitted by November 1, 2013. Continuation in the Ph.D. programme
will be subject to the candidate obtaining minimum 60% marks overall. 5 year
integrated M.S. (of IISERs) will be treated at par with 5 year integrated M.Sc.

limit : applicant should be born on or after August 1, 1987.
Nationality
: The applicant must be an Indian citizen.
Selection process :
The
selection of the students for the Ph.D. programme will be a two-step process:
1) Screening of the applications, followed by 2) Interview of the short-listed
candidates by the selection committees at RRCAT.
For
Physics candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based on the applicant's
score/rank in JEST 2013 and/ or
CSIR-UGC NET 2012.
For
Chemistry and Life Sciences candidates, the short-list shall be prepared based
on the applicant's rank in CSIR-UGC Net 2012.
The
short-listed Physics candidates shall be called for interview to be conducted
tentatively on May 22, 23, 24, & June 17, 18, 19, 20, 2013, at RRCAT,
Indore. The applicant must indicate choice of their interview date in the
application form, failing which they will have to appear for interview on one
of the above dates assigned by RRCAT.
The
short-listed Chemistry and Life Sciences candidates shall be called for
interview to be conducted tentatively in the third week of May 2013.
All the
outstation applicants called for interview will be paid to and fro sleeper
class train fare by the shortest route or the actual fare, whichever is less.
This is subject to the verification of their eligibility from the original

interview will have to submit proof of overall ≥ 60% marks in the completed
semesters. In absence of this, the candidate will not be interviewed and the
travel cost will not be reimbursed.
The
candidates selected in the interviews will be asked to report at RRCAT on July
8, 2013 for the medical examination. The Physics candidates will visit all the
guides of the Ph.D. vacancies offered to get a thorough idea about the Ph.D.
topics offered. This process and the assignment of Ph.D. topic to each
candidate will converge by July 31, 2013. The Chemistry and Life Sciences
candidates will be deputed to BARC Training School, Mumbai for their one year
course work, and the Physics candidates will carry out their one year course
work at BARC Training School, Indore, from the first week of August 2013.
