Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) offers the Master’s Degree Programme and the Post Graduate Diploma Programme in the area of Counselling and Family Therapy.


Master of Science in Counselling and Family Therapy [M. Sc. (CFT)] is aimed at developing professionals in this vital field, which is gaining greater salience in the present times from both social and employment perspectives. The contemporary social scenario has resulted in an increased need and demand for professional support in terms of Counselling and Family Therapy, which is being increasingly recognised as an effective approach both for promoting positives like strengthening family ties, fostering positive parenting, and increasing resilience of individuals in vulnerable situations as well as for addressing negative aspects such as socio-psychological problems, maladaptive behaviours, declining mental health, and psychosomatic disorders that are being increasingly witnessed in recent times. By developing the requisite knowledge, understanding, attitudes and skills in the area of Counselling and Family Therapy, this unique Master’s Degree Programme would help to train professional cadres in the field. A remarkable feature of this programme of study is its focus on the applied aspect and the thrust on opportunities for hands-on experience for the learner. The programme has theory, supervised practicum, internship, and dissertation as components. The duration of the Master’s Degree programme is two years. However, it can be completed in a maximum period of 5 years.


Post Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Family Therapy (PGDCFT) is of one year duration. It is a response to the felt societal need for Counselling and Family Therapy professionals, who could lend a helping hand in promoting positive family processes and help individual family members in distress in a comprehensive way. It is aimed at training professionals in the area, and thus fill the existing lacuna. The PG Diploma has theory as well as supervised practicum components, and can be completed in a maximum of 4 years.


A special feature of the Master’s Degree Programme is that it has provision of an exit point for learners (after successful completion of first year courses) in the form of PGDCFT. Conversely, a learner who has successfully completed PGDCFT can apply to join the second year of M.Sc.(CFT).
