This training programme is the latest in a series of training courses organized by the National Academy of Agricultural Research Managcmcni (NAARM). Hyderabad in Geographical Information System (GIS). Remote Sensing (RS) and applications using open source technologies.
GIS is plays an important role in agriculture production throughout the world by helping farmers increase production, reduce costs, and manage their land more efficiently. Open Source Web based GIS plays an import an l role in providing value added services to end users. Due to lack of awareness in Open Source Softwares many researchers not addressed the spatial problems in their research works in ICAR / SAUs. This training programme emphasis mainly on effectively address the spatial variations using Open source softwares with Zero Budgeting on softwares The training programme will consists of lectures , Hands on experiences and a project
The aim of this training programme is to enhance competence of NARS professionals in understanding GIS, GPS and RS and applying these principles in Agricultural Sciences. This will consists of lectures. Hands on experiences and a project that will assist in maintaining momentum in utilizing the applications of GIS. GPS and RS in an effective way in agricultural research

Objectives
This training programme is designed with the twin goals of understanding and applying GIS tools in agriculture, and to develop a decision support framework for managing agricultural production systems for sustainability. GIS tools are central to such a framework. The specific objectives of the programme are:
1. To introduce the concepts and applications of GIS and RS in Agriculture using open source GIS and related spatial technologies like remote sensing and image processing
2. To introduce relevanl definitions, concepts, indicators and framework lo formulate and resolve questions related to agricultural production
systems.
3. To provide hands-on experience on gcospalial knowledge management case studies using of Kree and Open Source GIS tools

Course contents
GIS& RS concepts and its application in agriculture
Introduction to Free and Open Source Software's (FOSS) tools w.r.t GIS &RS
* Case study using Quantum GIS (QGIS)
• Case study using ILWIS for RS applications
Developing spatial databases using ORDBMS (Postgre SQL)
Spatial queries and analysis using PostGIS Open Source Web GIS tools to develop WMS. WFS, WCS services

Eligibility
The NAIP (ICAR) sponsored training programme is open for participants from ICAR InstituteS'State Agricultural Univercities/ Krishi Vigyan Kendrasi1' Senior Executives from Agribusiness. Participants will be selected on the basis of their ability to benefit from the training. The total no. of scats in the training programme will be 25 (Twenty Five only).

Duration
October 21st  to 30th  2013 (both days inclusive). Participants are expected to arrive latest by the evening of October 20th. 2013 and can leave after 1700 hrs on October 30th, 2013.

Programme Fee
There is no programme fee.

Board and Lodging
The programme is fully residential, and all participants are expected to stay in the academy's well-furnished Halls of Residence/Scientists Home. The participants will be reimbursed for the journey, to and fro. restricted to AC-II tier train fare or bus fare. Actual TA will be paid on production of original tickets by the participants for journey from the place of duly to NAARM, Hyderabad and back by shortest route. Arrangements for lodging and boarding will be made by host Institute.

Travel
Hyderabad is well connected by air, rail, and road with all parts of the country. The Academy would not be able to make arrangements to receive the participants at their alighting point. Participants may reach the Academy, located in the Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University campus in Rajendranagar, by hiring taxi/auto. Participants are advised to make their return journey reservation at their end. in advance, as it will be difficult to get reservation after their arrival at N A A R VI.
