Science Fiction story writing competition for PhD students

Entries have been invited under the ‘AWSAR’ Programme of the National Council for Science & Technology Communication (NCSTC) Division.

The AWSAR stands for “Augmenting Writing Skills for Articulating Research”, which is an initiative to disseminate Indian research stories among the masses in a format that's easy to understand and interesting for a lay reader. Under this initiative, PhD and post-doctoral scholars in science and technology streams would be encouraged to write at least one popular science story during the tenancy of their scholarship, and to participate in a national competition.
Indian citizen pursuing PhD or PDF in any stream of Science and Technology (S&T), within the tenancy of respective fellowship can apply.

Award Categories
Selection of best 100 entries of popular science stories and prizes.
For PhD researchers: The initial screening of the entry will be done by expert panel. 100 entries will be selected and each will be awarded with cash prize of   10,000/- along with Certificate of Appreciation.
For Post doc fellows: Twenty entries would be selected from articles submitted by PDFs relating to their line of research. Each will be awarded with cash prize of   10,000/- along with Certificate of Appreciation.
Selection of top three leading stories
For PhD researchers: The top three articles/stories will be selected from the leading stories. Further, they will be awarded with the cash prize of   1,00,000/-,   50,000/- and   25,000/- respectively.
For Post doc fellows: One outstanding article/story will be selected from the leading stories. Further the same will be awarded with the cash prize of   1,00,000/-.
These awards will be bestowed on 28 February at National Science Day event every year. All the awardees will be given an opportunity to attend Science Film Training Workshop organized by Vigyan Prasar.

The following will be the criteria for judging the entries:

The entries will be judged on the basis of accuracy, clarity, insightfulness, and resourcefulness.
The entries should convincingly Awer the questions such as why does the research matter? Does the story explain the writer’s research in a way that is easy to comprehend? Is it a compelling read? etc.
The judgement will be done by a panel of science writers and scientists selected by Department of Science and Technology.
These awards will be bestowed on 28th February at National Science day. All the awardees will be given an opportunity to attend Science Film Training Workshop organized by Vigyam Prasar.
