Notice of admission to M.Sc. program in Economics
M.Sc. (Economics) 2015-16

The Department of Economics at the Shiv Nadar University would like to announce that admissions into the Masters Program in Economics are now open for the 2015-16 academic year.

The M.Sc. (Economics) is a two year (four semesters) program. The students undergo fairly rigorous training that prepares them for admission into PhD programs as well as for jobs in the government, the private sector. The department has a vibrant faculty with varied research interests offering the graduate students the option of working in a wide range of exciting fields. Please see the graduate prospectus of the department for more details.

Academically excellent M.Sc. students may continue on to do their Ph.D. with the department if they so wish.

Eligibility: Students who have or will have a bachelor’s degree (in any discipline) by September 2015 may apply. Prior economics training is not required.

Admission Process:
1.       The first step in the admission process is a written test held across six cities in India: Delhi-NCR, Kolkata, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru and Mumbai. Candidates will be informed about the venue of the test at least a week before the exam date. The written test will be held on 03rd May.
2.       Application Forms can be downloaded from the departmental webpage. Completed application forms should reach SNU by 17th April, 2015. Applications can be submitted by email or by post.
3.       The test will have 50 multiple choice questions.
Section I will have 5 questions that will test comprehension and analytical abilities. In Section II, students have a choice between answering questions from Section II A: Economics and Basic Mathematics
Section II B: Advanced Mathematics.
4.       Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview to be held at the Shiv Nadar University campus. The date for the interview is 25nd and 26th May. The department will reimburse candidates selected for interview with AC 3 Tier fare.
5.       Syllabus for entrance examination:
Section A. Economics and Basic Mathematics
Permutations and Combinations. Sets and Relations, Functions, Limits, Continuity, Differential and Integral Calculus. Unconstrained and Constrained Optimization. Descriptive Statistics: Measures of Central tendency, Dispersion, Skewness and Kurtosis. Probability Theory, Sampling, Estimation, Inference and Hypothesis Testing Theory of Consumer and Producer Behaviour; Market Structures: Perfect Competition, Monopoly and Oligopoly, General Equilibrium. Basic Models of International Trade: Ricardian Model and Hecksher Ohlin Model, National Income Accounting, Aggregate Demand and Aggregate Supply.

Section B. Undergraduate Mathematics:
Descriptive Statistics, Permutations and Combinations, Sets and Relations. Group and Rings and Fields. Functions, Limits, Continuity, Differential and Integral Calculus, Ordinary and Partial Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Unconstrained and Constrained Optimization, Probability Theory, Sampling, Estimation, Inference and Hypothesis testing

APPLICATION FEES: There is no application fee for M.Sc. (Economics) applicants.

Three dedicated research centers – Big Data Analytics Center, Center for Informatics, and Institute for Innovations & Inventions with Mathematics & IT – provide additional support for interdisciplinary research.

Eligibility: A candidate should have (or expect to have by August 2014) a Masters degree in the appropriate science discipline, with a minimum of 60% marks or an equivalent grade point.
Candidates who have qualified for CSIR-UGC NET-JRF, DBT-JRF, GATE-JRF, JEST, ICMR-JRF, or NBHM Fellowship are preferred. Short-listed candidates will be required to demonstrate their knowledge through an on-site written test and interview. Selections will be based on past academic performance, written examination and/or interview.

Financial Assistance: All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. program are eligible for teaching/ research assistantships/fellowships of Rs. 35,000 per month along with tuition fee waivers. In addition, SNU offers hostel fee waivers to all Ph.D. students.

About SNU
Shiv Nadar University (http://snu.edu.in/)  is a multi-disciplinary research university, established by the Shiv Nadar Foundation in 2011 through an act of the State of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is built on a spacious 256 acres fully-residential campus, near Dadri, U.P., at the outskirts of Delhi. Research Infrastructure
Laboratories in the School of Natural Sciences (SNS) are equipped with basic research facilities including fume hoods fitted with Schlenk lines, LCMS-qToF, UV-visible spectrophotometers, Infrared spectrophotometers, ball-milling, I-V measurement system, thermal evaporator, glove box, microwave furnace, polarization loop-tracer, bio-safety cabinets (for mammalian, bacterial and plasmodium cultures), CO2 Incubators, shaker incubators, flow cytometry, inverted microscope, plate reader, cell counter, fluorescent microscope, electroporator, PCR, RT-PCR, etc. Advanced analytical instrumentation such as 400 MHz NMR, HPLC, CHN analyzer, DSC, TGA, DLS, rheometer, single crystal and powder XRD, SEM, AFM, Raman spectrometer, photoluminescence, fluorimeter, surface profilometer, MEMS, pulsed electron deposition, magnetron sputtering, vacuum annealing oven, split tube, and cylindrical furnaces are in the process of being acquired.
Computational facilities at SNS include a high performance IBM cluster (“Magus”) consisting of 32 compute nodes (plus two nodes with GPU processors) delivering 332.8 Giga flops with each node and a theoretical peak performance of 10.649 TF from over all compute nodes. Additionally, there are several stand-alone Linux workstations that are being used for teaching and research purpose.
Several software for bioinformatics and cheminformatics, molecular modeling, molecular dynamics, quantum chemistry, and statistic learning are also available.
Our library, housed in a modern 5-storey building, provides online access, from anywhere in the campus, to thousands of electronic journals and databases including APS, AIP, ACS, RSC, AMS, SIAM, Springer, Elsevier, Wiley and Nature journals, in addition to various books and e-books.

Admissions of 2014

Shiv Nadar University’s eligibility criteria are developed to shortlist students with knowledge of subjects which serve as the foundation for each program. While students are admitted to specific programs, SNU offers the flexibility to transfer to any program/school in the University after completion of one year in the program admitted to. Students can also come in as an Undeclared candidate and decide on their Major by end of first year. Such transfer is subject to fulfillment of pre-requisites, availability of seats in the School or the Program and acceptance by the concerned department.

Fulfilling the eligibility criteria is only the first step and does not entitle a candidate to admission. The candidate needs to complete all the stages successfully to be offered admission to Shiv Nadar University. Also, the scholarships given here are indicative and the decision of Shiv Nadar University with respect to grant of scholarship will be final and binding depending on the performance through all stages of the selection process.

To provide a fair and equal opportunity to every aspirant, Shiv Nadar University normalizes the scores obtained in class 12 to even out the inconsistencies that exist between various Boards of Examinations. Admissions of 2014

Shiv Nadar University will follow a 4-stage admission process comprising:

Eligibility based on class 12 scores as defined in the section - Eligibility for Admissions and Scholarships - Undergraduate Programs

SNUSAT to be administered at over 250 Pearson Vue test centres across India helping every aspirant to participate in the process. SNUSAT will be available from 5th May 2014 till 25th July 2014. The SNUSAT will have the following format:

Non – Disclosure Agreement: 3 minutes

Multiple Choice Questions – 106 minutes divided into:

Quantitative Ability: 36 minutes
Abstract Reasoning: 40 minutes
Verbal Ability: 30 minutes

Essay question: 1 question, 15 minutes
