Recruitment of Scientists (Fellows)

National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) a premier Research Institute under the aegis of Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (an autonomous Organization under Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India), proposes to appoint talented academics and researchers under the Scheme ‘Quick Recruitment of Scientists (Fellows) for Major Research Projects’ tenable at NGRI, Hyderabad. Applications in the prescribed format are invited for the following positions from bright and eligible Indian Nationals with excellent and consistent academic record, a high degree of motivation and propose to take up research in Earth Science as a career.

The applicants should have a proven record of independent research as demonstrated by publications and / or other professional accomplishments.

1. Scientist Fellow Range-1:Rs.31000/32550/34100/35650/37200
Qualifications : Ph.D. in Science or Engineering (or) M.Tech. / ME (Engineering)
Desirable : Postdoctoral research experience and quality publications
in journals of international repute
Age : Below 40 years as on the last date prescribed. (Desirable below 30 years)
Emoluments : Fixed/consolidated at any stage in Range-1 with 5% annual increase in the emoluments, if otherwise eligible

2. Scientist Fellow Range-2:Rs.36000/37800/39600/41400/43200
Qualifications : Ph.D. in Science or Engineering (or) M.Tech. / ME (Engineering) with three years research experience
Age : Below 40 years as on the prescribed last date. (Desirable below 35 years)
Emoluments : Fixed/consolidated at any stage in Range-2 with 5% annual increase in emoluments, if otherwise eligible.

Tenure of the appointments is initially for one year extendable by two more years and
further regular career avenues shall be considered depending upon merit and performance as per rules and procedures.


Discipline-wise requirement:
I. Post Codes: S-01 and S-02 (Two positions)
Discipline: Geophysics
Specialization: Electrical / Electromagnetic exploration methods Job Requirements: To carry out research in the area of ground and air-borne geophysical exploration. This would involve geophysical data acquisition, processing and development of interpretation tools.

II. Post Code: S-03 (One position)
Discipline: Geophysics
Specialization: Electrical / Electromagnetic data simulation using FD/FEM/BEM methods
Job Requirements: To develop new independent research initiatives in the area of 2/3D
geoelectrical field modeling using natural / artificial electromagnetic fields.

III. Post Codes: S-04, S-05 and S-06 (Three positions)
Discipline: Geophysics
Specialization: Seismic Exploration / Seismology with strong background in seismic wave field modeling
Job Requirements: Designing Geophysical experiments, seismic data acquisition, processing and modeling related to shallow and deep crust imaging.

IV. Post Code: S-07 (One position)
Discipline: Applied Mathematics / Physics / Geophysics / Mechanical Engineering
Specialization: Numerical modeling of large and complex systems
Job Requirements: To study Earth system processes using numerical approaches

V. Post Code: S-08 (One position)
Discipline: Geophysics / Physics / Mathematics / Engineering
Specialization: Non-linear dynamics and signal modeling
Job Requirements: To carry out research in the area of Geophysical modeling using the state-ofthe-art tools from non-linear dynamics and system theory.

VI. Post Code: S-09 (One position)
Discipline: Geophysics / Physics / Civil Engineering / Mechanical Engineering
Specialization: Rock Mechanics
Job Requirements: To undertake laboratory and field physical property measurements of rocks and correlation with other geophysical measurements to study Earth processes
VII. Post Code: S-10 (One position)
Discipline: Geophysics / Physics
Specialization: Paleo-Magnetism and Rock Magnetism
Job Requirements: To develop state-of-the-art research programs and facilities in the area of rock and paleo-magnetism

VIII. Post Codes: S-11 and S-12 (Two positions)
Discipline: Hydrology / Geophysics / Civil Engineering
Specialization: System modeling / Basin modeling
Job Requirements: Acquisition, interpretation and analysis of hydrological and hydrogeological data, numerical modeling of the system processes and response

IX. Post Code: S-13 (One position)
Discipline: Geology
Specialization: Structural Geology and Tectonics
Job Requirements: Field structural geology and mathematical modeling of geological structures along with surface geophysical data for tectonics and geodynamics

X. Post Codes: S-14 and S-15 (Two positions)
Discipline: Physics / Geology / Geophysics
Specialization: Mass Spectrometry and Electronics
Job Requirements: Operation and maintenance of analytical facilities, development of new analytical protocols for isotope research based on Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometer, Inductively-coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometers with Laser Ablation, Isotopic Ratio Mass Spectrometers and Electron Micro Probe. Participation in major geological research programs.

XI. Post Codes: S-16 and S-17 (Two positions)
Discipline: Geology / Geochemistry / Physics / Geophysics / Chemistry
Job Requirements: To design and undertake research in advanced Isotope Geochemistry and Geochronology integrating with geological, petrological and geophysical data.

XII. Post Code: S-18 (One position)
Discipline: Geology / Geophysics / Physics / Geochemistry / Chemistry
Job Requirements: Development of new analytical protocols for stable isotopic analysis of natural materials and to carryout research in the area of Paleo-climates and Climate Science.

XIII. Post Codes: S-19 and S-20 (Two positions)
Discipline: Electronics / Instrumentation Engineering
Job Requirements: Maintenance of sophisticated geophysical instruments, data acquisition in field and laboratory and participation in data processing and modeling.

The areas and the number of positions mentioned against each are inter-changeable depending upon the institutional needs and availability of talent.

Selection Procedure
The candidates will be required to make a formal presentation on their work and future plans at an Institute colloquium. This will be followed by an interview by a duly constituted Selection Committee.

Other benefits
Candidates selected for Scientist (FELLOW) positions shall be paid (i) House Rent
Allowance on the basis of the emoluments fixed, if official accommodation is not provided (ii)
Medical facilities/benefits as made applicable to CSIR-NGRI Scientists will be extended (iii) will be entitled for 30 days (15+15) leave as prescribed under CCS (Leave) Rules, 1972 and orders thereon from time to time.


General conditions
1. Relaxation of age and experience can be considered in case of exceptionally meritorious candidates with prior approval of the Competent Authority.
2. Applications (to be down-loaded from the website www.ngri.org.in ) from the candidates working in Govt. Departments/ Public Sector Organizations and Govt. funded Research Agencies will be considered only if forwarded through proper channel (advance copy of application should reach before the last date ) and with a clear certificate that no vigilance case is being pending/contemplated against him/her and the applicant will be relieved immediately/within fifteen days on receipt of appointment order.
3. Candidates those who are willing to apply for both Scientist (Fellow) Range-1 & 2, should apply in two separate applications.

4. Application duly filled in and duly supported by attested copies of all relevant Certificates including Community Certificate (in the case of SC/ST/OBC candidates), appropriate Certificate issued by the competent authority in case of physically challenged candidates, passport size photograph of the individual should be sent so as to reach the Controller of Administration on or before 27/05/2011.
5. Applications not accompanied by the relevant attested copies of certificates including semester-wise Memorandum of Marks sheet(s) will be summarily rejected.
6. Incomplete and unsigned applications as well as those received after the last date i.e.27/05/2011 will not be considered.
7. A lower standard of suitability consistent with efficiency will be applied in the interview in respect of SC/ST candidates.
8. Mere fulfilling the essential educational qualifications and experience will not vest any right on a candidate for being called for interview. The applications will be short-listed and the decision of the Institute will be final.
9. The candidates called for interview will be paid to and fro single second class rail fare, by shortest direct route, from the actual place of undertaking the journey or from the place of their residence whichever is nearer to Secunderabad Railway Station, on production of Bus ticket/rail ticket number, as per GOI/CSIR Rules.
10. Canvassing in any form, and/or bringing in any influence, political or otherwise, will be treated as a disqualification for the post.
