ISM-JRF [Ph D Programme, 2013-14, Phase-1]
Indian School of
Mines (ISM)-Dhanbad, a Deemed University (since 1967), established in the year 1926,
is fully funded by Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of
India. This is located in the heart of major Indian coalfields, in the state of
Jharkhand. The institute offers B Tech, M Tech (Regular and Dual-degrees), M
Sc/M Sc Tech, Integrated M Sc/M Sc Tech, MPhil, MBA, Ph D and D Sc in various
areas of Engineering such as; Computer Science, Chemical, Electrical,
Electronics, Environmental, Fuel, Industrial, Mechanical, Mineral, Mining, Mining
Machinery, Petroleum; and Sciences such as; Physics, Chemistry,
Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Computer Science,
Environmental Science, besides the Management and Humanities & Social
Sciences: Philosophy and English. It has been focusing its academic and
research activities on various aspects of industry. ISM has maintained its all
India character drawing faculty and students from all-overs the country. It
occupies a unique position, not only in India but also in Asia Pacific, and has
been contributing significantly ever since its inception to the development of
coal, mineral and related allied industries.
Institute
possesses world class faculties and state-of-the-art laboratory facilities in
all most all the
disciplines of
engineering, sciences and research areas. These include:
- A Modern Lecture Hall Complex
- Top class Library with over 1,25,000
books & Journals,
- Foreign language courses on German,
French, Spanish etc.,
- A computer centre equipped with
state-of-the-art internet facility (in addition to the departments its own
computer labs/internet facilities).
- An Executive Development Centre with
modern teaching aid facility.
- Separate hostels for boys and girls with
computer facility within the campus.
- Health Centre, Canteen, Captive
Generator, Sports, Recreational facilities etc. and also
- Part-Time Execute MBA programmes
Besides holding
collaborations with reputed international institutes for exchange of faculty
and students.
Ph D PROGRAMMES
To give an ample
opportunity for carrying out research that would lead to Ph D degrees, ISM provides
Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) to the deserving and eligible candidates who
get qualified through national level
tests. This scheme is currently available to all the above listed disciplines
holding graduate/post-graduate/M Phil M BA degrees in Engineering/Sciences and management
studies [listed in Table-1]. The selected JRFs are required to register for Ph
D programme within one month of their joining by paying the requisite tuition
fees and other charges on the date of their registration, failing which the
selection will stand, cancelled.
FELLOWSHIP (for
Ph.D.)
The selected
candidates will get a consolidated research fellowship of Rs.18,000/- per month
for first two years of their research and thereafter for the subsequent years
Rs.20,000/- per month for
the M Tech/M
Phil/MBA degree holders. B.Tech/ M.Sc. Tech/ M.Sc. or equivalent degree holders
will get a consolidated amount of Rs. 16000/- for first two years and
Rs.18000/- up to three years per month. Changes occurring in the fellowship
will be notified and intimated to the candidates.
The contingency
expenses up to Rs.30,000/- per annum will be allowed with the prior approval from
Guide & Head of the Department.
The work
performance of the JRF’s would be assessed as per the institute rules for every
six months for continuation of the fellowship. Their fellowship may be
withdrawn at any time if the work progress is found unsatisfactory.
ADMISSION
PROCEDURE
Interested
candidates should submit their application online ONLY, between 09.03.2013
to 06.04.2013. Details on application along with
information brochure containing eligibility criteria may be downloaded from the
ISM website http://www.ismdhanbad.ac.in/admissions
from 09.03.2013 onwards.
The last date for the submission of online applications is 06.04.2013. Syllabus
for written examination (for GATE/NET Not Qualified candidates) can also be downloaded
from the same site. The application fee for JRF programme is Rs. 1500/- for GN/OBC
candidates and Rs.750/- for SC/ST/PD candidates. The application fee is to be
paid through online bank challan of SBI.
A
hard copy of the completed application form along with requisite documents
(self-attested and
photocopies
on both sides, wherever, applicable) and copy of bank challan , should reach
Deputy
Registrar
(Academic & SW), Indian School of Mines, Dhanbad - 826004 latest
by 12.04.2013.
Please
mention on the top of the envelope, “APPLICATION FOR ISM-JRF (Ph D, 2013-14
PHASE-1)” in bold letters.
Under
no circumstance application fee once paid will be refunded.
ELIGIBILITY
· The subjects of
specialisations for written examination, code and eligibility qualifications
are
given in Table 1
Department-wise and for different disciplines in each Department.
· While filling
the qualifications candidates must ensure that they have the required
eligibility
qualification
and also a first class in the qualifying degree. Proof of class
awarded is a must
for considering the application
form.
· Candidates
appearing for final semester exams are also ELIGIBLE to apply. Appearing
candidates
should provide the information about their OGPA/percentage of marks upto
previous
semester.
· All JRFs will be
governed by the ISM’s Ph D rules (Full Time) prevailing at that time.
SUBMISSION
OF APPLICATION FORM
Application
forms duly filled in the prescribed format are to be submitted
online only. A copy of the same application should be printed and submitted
within the stipulated time (latest by 12.04.2013) after filling it,
accompanied by the following documents (option for printing of the application
is made available):
a) A
recent passport size photograph pasted on the space provided on application
form.
b) GATE
or NET NOT QUALIFIED/GATE-NET QUALIFIED EARLIER THAN 2011
candidates
are required to fill-in the verification card with recent passport size
photograph pasted on space provided. The verification card should also be
enclosed along with the application form. Admit cards will be generated
automatically and hosted on the website after due verification. Candidates
should print the admit card from the website and bring it during the
examination for verification (photograph pasted should be same as that of application
form).
c)
Self-attested requisite documents together with copy of bank Challan
Note:
Original certificates along with two sets of self attested copies of the
certificates and mark
sheets
(including valid NET/GATE score at the time of admission) starting from matriculation/school
final examination are to be produced at the time of counselling/interview and
admission.
The original GATE/ NET Card and Migration Certificate are to be submitted at
the time of admission compulsorily along with the programme fees for the
first semester. Caution money and security deposits are refundable only after
successful completion of the programme.
Fees
for subsequent semesters are to be paid before the commencement of the each
semester.
Application
forms received after the DUE DATE will not be considered and no query/communication
is entertained in this regard thereafter.

ADMISSION
PROCEDURE
1. Junior Research
Fellowship is open to candidates below the age of 30 years (35 years for women,
PC, SC, ST & OBC) as on 12th Aug, 2013 who have
obtained first class at the qualifying degree or equivalent grades in
the relevant discipline of Science/ Engineering/ Management/Humanities.
Physically Challenged (PC) candidates may not be considered for field related
research areas/Departments. The medium of instruction and research paper
publication/reporting will be only in English. Therefore, the scholars are
required to possess adequate knowledge of English.
2. Selection of
candidate for ISM-JRF, will be done as follows (important):
(a) For candidates with No
GATE/NET or for candidates qualified GATE/NET earlier than 2011.
· These applicants have to qualify
the ISM-JRF written test 2013-14 (Phase-1).
· Only the successful candidates
qualified in the written test will be called for the interview on scheduled
date · The weightages for written exam
and interview would be in the ratio of 50:50
· A weightage of 10 marks to be
given in the interview conducted for 50 marks to those candidates having M
Tech/M Phil with first class.
(b) For NET (Junior Research
Fellowship) qualified candidates (within validity period):
These candidates can directly
apply for Ph D programme as JRF to the Institute through respective departments
as their fellowship will be paid by the sponsoring agencies such as UGC/CSIR.
(c) For GATE/NET (Lectureship)
qualified candidates (qualified not earlier than 2011):
· All the GATE/NET qualified
candidates are eligible for direct interview with the following distribution of
marks :
o GATE/NET
Performance: Reduced to 50 marks based on criteria decided by ISM.
o Interview
would have 50 marks
§ For candidates with M
Tech/M/Phil with first class a weightage of 10 marks is given and the
interview would be held for 40 marks.
§ For candidates having only
GATE/NET without M.Tech./M.Phil would appear for 50 marks.
(d) Option for appearing in
ISM-JRF Written Test
GATE qualified candidates (not
earlier than 2011) having low GATE scores who are desirous to take the
ISM-JRF Written Exam may be allowed. In such cases the written exam marks will
be taken into consideration with due weightages as mentioned (para a above).

The All India written test for GATE NOT QUALIFIED/NET NOT QUALIFIED candidates
will be held on 12.05.2013 at Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Dhanbad,
Guwahati, Hyderabad, Indoor, Kolkata, Lucknow, New Delhi, Pune and Varanasi
from 9.00 AM -12.00 Noon. The medium of examination
is English.
Important:
If the number of candidates appearing for written exam in a particular centre
falls below a feasible cut-off number, ISM reserves the right to shift the
centres to the nearest centre.
RESERVATION FOR
ISM-JRF, Ph D Programme, 2013-14, Phase-1.
a) Reservation for
PC/SC/ST/OBC-NC candidates will be as per Government of India directive/guidelines
circulated from time to time, in each programme and will strictly apply.
b) For Physically Challenged (PC)
candidates subject to maximum of 3% within the respective category.
MEDICAL FITNESS
A candidate selected for a
programme will be offered admission, only if he/she is found fit as
per the norms & standards of
medical fitness set by ISM. An overview of the standards of medical
fitness set by ISM is presented
below.
A candidate
should have good general physique with:
- Chest
measurement: Not
less than 70cms with satisfactory limit of expansion and contraction.
- Vision:
Should
be normal. In case of defective vision, it should be corrected to 6/9 in both
eyes or 6/6 in
the better eye.
- Hearing:
Should
be normal. Defective hearing should be corrected.
- Heart
& Lungs: Should
not have any abnormality and no history of mental diseases or epileptic fits.
The candidate shall submit the
medical certificate in the prescribed proforma at the time of admission.
However, the candidates to be
admitted will be examined by a medical board set by ISM before
admission, whose
decision for medical fitness will be final.
IMPORTANT
POINTS TO NOTE
(a) FORM OF
CERTIFICATE (Annexure I) TO BE PRODUCED and submitted (in original) at
the time of admission
BY OTHER BACKWARD CLASSES (NON-CREAMY LAYER) APPLYING FOR ADMISSION TO CENTRAL
EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS (CEIs), UNDER THE GOVERNMENT OF INDIA AND should be
ISSUED ON OR AFTER 20.01.2013. Candidates with certificates earlier to this date would be
treated as General Category candidates.
(b) The ISM has the
authority to decide the qualifying score for each paper.
(c) The candidates have to
themselves ensure their eligibility and other requirements (age, qualification,
class obtained etc.) while applying. ISM will not be held responsible for
mistakes while filling the form identified at any stage and the applications
are liable for rejection. No correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
