The Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) 2013-14
scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India for
admission to Undergraduate Engineering Programmes in premier Technical
institutions in India has been notified. The Institute coordinating the DASA
admissions for this year is the National Institute of Technology Karnataka
(NITK), Surathkal Mangalore, Karnataka (www.nitk.ac.in
).
Under the DASA scheme, Foreign Nationals/ Persons
of Indian Origin (PIOs)/ Non-Resident Indians (NRIs) are eligible for admission
to the Undergraduate programmes in
Engineering/ Architecture/ Planning
for the Academic
year 2013-14 to
National Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of
Information Technology (IIITs) and other premier Centrally Funded Technical
Institutions (CFTI) in India DASA.
Eligibility:
Applicants should have been born on or after October 1, 1988. Applicants must
have passed the qualifying examination, the Senior Secondary (10+2) or
equivalent (as per the list given in Appendix-I of the Information Brochure available
at http://www.dasanit.org/ ) from any
system of education recognized by the Association of Indian Universities (www.aiuweb.org ) and should have completed
successfully Mathematics, Physics and one of Chemistry/Bio-technology/Computer
Science/Biology) in 11th and/ 12th as applicable to his/her Board, securing at
least 60% aggregate marks (average of all subjects of qualifying examination
taken together) or 6.75 CGPA (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent in the
qualifying examination. In case, CGPA on a different scale is awarded or if
only grades are awarded, percentage/CGPA equivalence provided by the principal
examination authorities will only be considered. Candidates appearing for the
qualifying examination with the above-mentioned subjects in the academic year
2012-13 and expecting their final results latest by September 15, 2013 may also
apply.
Applicants should also have a minimum total valid
score of 1440 in SAT Subject Tests (Subjects: Mathematics Level 2, Physics and Chemistry). SAT subject test
score has to be send directly through CollegeBoard to NITK (Institute Code:
6530). Internet downloaded score cards are not acceptable. Candidates at the
time of registration for SAT Subject Tests should indicate Institute code 6530
for sending their scores to NITK. Candidates who have taken multiple attempts
in SAT Subject Tests can send each valid score to NITK directly through
CollegeBoard, USA. The best valid score in each subject will be considered for
arriving at the total score which will be used for merit list preparation. SAT
Subject Test scores received till May 29, 2013 only will be considered for
preparation of the first, second and third merit lists. For more details on SAT

Registration/First Year Tuition Fee: An amount of
US$ 7,250/- has to be paid under Registration/First Year Tuition Fee, which
includes a non-refundable registration fee of US$ 250/- and first year Tuition
Fee of US$ 7,000/-.
Foreign Nationals from SAARC countries, eligible
for 50% Tuition Fee waiver provided they have passed the qualifying examination
in SAARC countries, need pay US$ 3,750/- along with the application form of
which US$ 3,500/- is the first year tuition fee and US$250/-, a non-refundable
registration fee.
Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan can pay their fees
either in US Dollars or in Equivalent Indian Rupees. In case of payment in
Rupee, they are required to get Exchange Rate Certificate from the bankers and
submit the same along with the application form.
Tuition Fee for Subsequent Years of Study: The
annual tuition fee of US$ 7000/ US$ 3500 (as applicable) for the subsequent
years of study is to be paid by the selected and admitted candidates, directly
to the concerned Institution, at the beginning of each academic year/ semester
as per rules of the Institution.

Payment of Registration/Tuition Fee: Applicants
have to pay the registration fee and first year tuition fee along with the
application form for admission under the DASA scheme.
The fee can be paid either through SWIFT Transfer
or Demand Draft or E-payment. Charges for fee payment, if any, should be borne
by the candidate. Payment can be made through bank transfer to Corporation Bank
as per the details given under clause 2.2.2 of the Information Brochure. Bank
transaction charges applicable, should be borne by the candidate for
transferring the money through SWIFT.
Payment can also be done through Demand Draft drawn
in favor of ‘NITK DASA’, payable at New York, USA. The DD should be valid for
at least 3 months from the date of issue.
For E-payment, applicant has to use the URL given
in the online application form for paying through their Credit/Debit card. On
successful completion of the transaction, a Transaction ID would be generated
automatically and will appear in the application form. Candidates should note
the Transaction ID separately for future reference.
Submission
of Application: The submission of application is a two stage process,
both of which are essential. The first stage is the online submission of
application at http://www.dasanit.org and submission of signed print copy of the
application along with required documents and payment details to DASA Office,
NITK Surathkal. The second stage is submission of SAT subject test score to be
sent to NITK Surathkal through CollegeBoard, USA (Institute Code 6530)
The Online submission of applications involves the
two steps, Registration and Application filling and submission (Stage A). In
Registration part, the applicant has to create an account at http://www.dasanit.org by entering the details asked for which
includes username (to be chosen by the candidate), Password for registration (at least eight
characters, to be chosen by the candidates), e-mail id etc. Once the correct
details are entered, applicant should click ‘Create an account’. If the account
is successfully created, the candidate will get an email, confirming the
username, applicant ID and password which should be noted down for future
logins, for completing the application form and checking the status of the
application etc.
Once an account is created, the applicant should
complete application filling and submission of application form. Applicant
should login using email-id and password. They should first upload their latest
passport size photograph in .jpg format with size below 1MB. Then the
candidates should click on ‘Fill the online application form’, to start filling
application. They have to fill the application by providing the details asked.
They should click ‘Preview Application Form’ button to preview the form and
ensure that all the required details have been provided correctly. In case,
there are some corrections to be made, candidates can click the ‘Edit the
Application Form’ button and edit the application.
After ensuring that all the data provided are
correct and in the required format, the candidate should click the ‘Submit the
online application Form’ button to submit the online application. The submitted
online application should be printed using the ‘Download Application Form’
button. Candidates should print two copies of the submitted online application
form and should use one copy for the remaining process in Stage B, and keep the
other copy for their own records.
Stage B involves the submission of hard copy of the
application along with required documents to DASA office. Copy of the print out
obtained at the end of Stage A should be duly signed by the candidate and
parent / guardian. Candidate should affix a recent Passport size photograph
(4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) in the hard copy of the printed application form and attach
the following supporting documents to the hard copy of the application.
(i) Copy of candidate’s Passport (Nationals of
Nepal who do not have a passport have to submit copy of Authenticated
Citizenship Card as envisaged in the Brochure)
(ii) Copy of proof for date of birth (Secondary
Education Board / University Certificate (Class X or equivalent) or any
certificate issued by the Government authorities)
(iii) Copy of Mark Sheet of 10th, 11th and 12th or
equivalent examination
(iv) Proof of completion of 11th and 12th standard
or equivalent from outside India (Certificate from School authorities), for NRI
Candidates
(v) Details and proof of fee payment. In case of
payment by SWIFT transfer or DD, the complete details should be attached with
the printed application form. If fee is paid by DD, the original DD should be
attached.
The completed and signed application form along
with required documents should reach ‘The Coordinator DASA 2013-14, DASA
Office, National Institute of Technology Karnataka, Surathkal, Mangalore,
Karnataka- 575 025, India, latest by May 29, 2013.
The applications of candidates whose SAT Subject
Test scores are not received by May 29, 2013, will not be considered for
allotment of seats in the first three rounds. However, their application may be
considered for allotment of seats in Spot admission on July 26, 2013 against
the seats remaining vacant, provided their SAT subject test scores are received
by July 25, 2013.
Appeared/appearing candidates (academic year
2012-13) are also required to submit the duly completed and signed application
form along with required documents, to reach DASA Office, NITK Surathkal latest
by May 29, 2013. Provisional admission given based on SAT score will be deemed
to be cancelled if the candidate is not able to produce the required documents
for academic eligibilities within the specified time.
The transcripts / marks / grade sheets of the
qualifying examination should be authenticated /attested by the head of the
school / Institution. A copy of the qualifying exam marks card is to be mailed
to the DASA office as soon as it is available, mentioning the full name of
candidate and DASA 2013-14 Application ID. Candidates should submit the
original marks card of the qualifying examination at the time of admission at
the allotted Institute or submit it within the dates specified by that
Institute.
Preparation
of Merit List: A merit list of all the eligible candidates would be drawn
on the basis of total SAT Subject Test scores. Only those candidates, whose
valid SAT Subject Test scores have been received by NITK, Surathkal, on or
before May 29, 2013 directly from College Board, will be considered for merit
list preparation and seat allotment. In case of candidates who have made
multiple attempts, the best of the valid individual subject scores communicated
by CollegeBoard will be used to compute the total SAT subject test scores.
If the SAT Subject Test scores (total) of two or
more candidates are same, the inter se merit of such candidate shall be
determined by considering the marks obtained in SAT Subject Test Maths Level 2 and
then Physics and then by percentile obtained in Maths level 2, Physics and
Chemistry in that order. In case the tie is not broken by the above
consideration then the date of birth of the candidates will be compared and
older candidate will be given higher merit.
Allotment of Institutions and courses: Based on the
merit list drawn, the allotment of Institution and course would be made as per
the choices indicated by the candidate in his/her application form. In case a
candidate is not allotted any seat, the message ‘choice not available’ will be
shown against the name of the candidate in the allotment list. In such cases
the candidates will be eligible for subsequent rounds against vacancies.
After display of each allotment in the website,
candidates would be informed of their seat allotment through email. After each
allotment, candidates would be required to submit their online confirmation for
acceptance of the provisional admission to a particular Institution/ courses
within the specified time limit, failing which the candidate would lose the
allotment and will also lose their right for any further seat allotment in
subsequent round(s). The seats so vacated would be available for re-allotment
in subsequent rounds.
Candidates while accepting the seat allotment, if
interested, can give their willingness for up gradation of Institute / course
as per their original choices given at the time of filling the application. If
in case no up gradation takes place due to unavailability of vacancies in their
higher choices, the previous allotment will be retained.
First List
of Allotment (Round 1): All eligible candidates would be considered for
first round of allotment. First list of allotments will be displayed on DASA
website on June 1, 2013. Online confirmation for acceptance of the provisional
admission to the allotted Institution/ courses has to be given latest by 1700
hrs (IST) on June 7, 2013.
Second List
of Allotment (Round 2): All candidates who were not allotted a seat in the
first round and all those who had opted for up gradation would be considered
for seat allotment in the second round as per inter se merit. Second list of
allotments shall be displayed on DASA 2013-14 website on June 8, 2013.
Candidates would be required to submit their online confirmation for acceptance
of the provisional admission to a particular Institution/ courses latest by
1700 hrs (IST) on June 14, 2013.
Third List
of Allotment (Round 3): All candidates who were not allotted a seat in the
first and second rounds and all those who had opted for up gradation would be
considered for seat allotment in the third round as per inter se merit.
Third list of allotments will be displayed on DASA
2013-14 website on June15, 2013. The candidates would be required to submit
their online confirmation for acceptance of the provisional admission to a
particular Institution / courses latest by 1700 hrs (IST) on June 18, 2013. The
seat vacated would be available for re- allotment in Spot Round of admission.
Provisional
admission letters and reporting to allotted Institutions: The list of
candidates, who are allotted specific Institutions/ courses as per the
allotment list and from whom the acceptance of the seat allotment have been
received within the specified time frame, will be forwarded to concerned
Institution for granting provisional admission. Provisional admission letters
for such candidates would be uploaded on the website, and also sent by email to
the individual candidates. After three rounds of allotment, provisionally
selected candidates have to report to allotted Institutes for admission during
July 15, 2013 to July 18, 2013. All admissions would be subject to the
verification of original
certificates / documents
and satisfactory physical
fitness as prescribed
by the concerned Institutes during the time of
admission.
Internal
Sliding: All the participating Institutes would be requested to conduct the
internal sliding process after completion of admission process. After the
internal sliding is completed, the participating Institutes will notify the
vacancy status to DASA Office at NITK Surathkal.
Spot Admission against vacant seats: Seats
remaining vacant after the internal sliding in respective Institutes will be
displayed on the DASA 2013-14 website on July 22, 2013. Candidates who have not
got any allotment in the earlier rounds and those who have become eligible
later or whose SAT scores were received later than the specified date would
also be eligible for Spot admission round.
The details of the Spot round will be announced in
the DASA 2013-14 website on July 22, 2013. Spot admission round is likely to be
conducted on July 26, 2013 at NITK Surathkal. Those candidates provisionally
selected for admission through the Spot admission round would have to report
for admission in allotted Institutes between July 29, 2013 and July 31, 2013.
