Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar
Pre-Doctoral and Ph. D. Programme – 2013
Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution
within the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research
activities in the Institute centers around theoretical & experimental
physics in the areas of condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, high-energy
physics and quantum computation. The institute has a large number of
experimental facilities such as the 3 MeV Pelletron accelerator (and associated
beam lines for carrying out Rutherford back scattering/Channeling, proton
induced X- ray emission (PIXE), accelerator mass spectroscopy (AMS),
Implantation etc.), low energy negative ion implantation facility, high
resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), X- ray photoemission
spectroscopy (XPS), angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), X- ray
diffraction (XRD), X-ray reflectometry & standing waves, micro-Raman,
photoluminescence spectroscopy (PL), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy
(FTIR), UV-VIS spectrophotometer, scanning probe microscopy (SPM), molecular
beam epitaxy (MBE), ion beam induced nanopatterning facility, a
large area-high precision atomic force microscopy (AFM) with in-built
nanoindentation & nanolithography, a high-resolution scanning electron
microscopy (SEM) system, focused ion beam (FIB) system, surface profilometer, physical property
measurement system (PPMS), magnetic property measurement system (SQUID VSM),
etc. In the area of thin film and nanomaterials growth, new facilities such as
UHV e-beam evaporation system, DC/RF sputtering system with glancing angle
deposition facility to grow 3-D nanostructures and pulsed laser deposition are
being created. The Institute has also been actively involved in several
international collaborations, notable among them are experiments in
ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions at CERN, Geneva and BNL, USA.
One of the
important objectives of the Institute has been to train and guide young
scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular one year
Pre-doctoral (post-M.Sc.) course and a regular Doctoral (Ph. D.) research
program for those who successfully complete the Pre-doctoral course. The
Pre-doctoral program is designed to train fresh M.Sc. students for conducting
research activities. It is aimed at imparting a broad based training in
advanced physics and research methodology. The course work is planned with the
view that it should help a student not only in doctoral research, but also
enable him/her to become a good physics teacher irrespective of whether or not
he/she takes up doctoral research. The Pre-doctoral course runs from August to
June every year. The successful candidates are awarded certificates for
“Post-M.Sc. Course in Advance Physics” which has been recognized by the Utkal
University, Berhampur University, and Sambalpur University as equivalent to
their M.Phil degree.
On successful
completion of the Pre-doctoral course, the students are eligible to join for
research under the supervision of faculty members of the Institute, leading to
the Ph.D. degree awarded by Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a
deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy.
The Institute
provides hostel accommodation (on campus) for the Pre-doctoral and the Doctoral
scholars. During the Pre-doctoral and the first year of the Ph. D. program,
students are paid a fellowship of Rs. 16,000/- p.m. On satisfactory completion of the first year of the Ph. D.
program, students are placed in Senior Research Fellowship (SRF) grade and are
paid Rs. 18,000/- p.m. fellowship. In addition, there is a contingency grant of
Rs. 20,000/- per year to meet expenses on books and for domestic travel to
attend conferences and workshops. The HBNI also supports the students for
participating in an International conference once during the doctoral
programme. Medical facilities are also available to the students which are at
par with the regular employees.
The Institute invites application for
its regular Ph. D program and the Pre-doctoral program from Indian nationals
having the following qualifications:
1. M.Sc. in Physics with a minimum of
55% marks (in aggregate).
2. A valid GATE score with rank up to
200 *,
OR
CSIR-UGC- NET
qualifiers within the last one-year.
OR
Candidates
who are offered DST-Inspire fellowship for carrying out Ph. D program.
Candidates who have qualified
JEST-2013 with a minimum score of 25 marks (cutoff rank of 174) need not send
any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a
candidate has scored less than 25 marks (cutoff rank of 174) in JEST-2013 but
satisfies any of the criteria mentioned above, he/she may also send the
application.
Candidates
appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., who have already qualified in
GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET or have obtained DST-Inspire fellowship can also apply.
They should submit the relevant proof before joining the program. In case of
non-availability of the M.Sc. results at the time of joining, the admission
will be treated as provisional.
Application
in prescribed format, should be sent only by E-mail as a PDF/DOC file
latest by 15th May, 2013 to admit@iopb.res.in.
Admission Procedure
All eligible
candidates, whether through JEST-2013 or through direct application against
this advertisement, will have to appear for a short written test on the morning
of 28th June, 2013. Result of the written test will be published on
the same day and short-listed candidates will have to appear for a personal
interview between June 28th–30th, 2013. Final merit list
will be prepared based on the scores of both the written test and the
interview.
Travel and Accommodation
Candidates
called for written test/interview will be reimbursed to & fro train fare by
the shortest route in sleeper class including reservation charges.
Accommodation would be provided to outstation candidates on request for the
stay during the test/interview. All candidates will be paid Rs. 400/- to cover
local expenses.
