Regional Mathematical Olympiad
in December 2013
The
Regional Mathematical Oympiad , which aims to spot talented students in
Mathematics, will be conducted on December 1. The centres in Kerala are
Thiru-vanathapuram, Kollam, Kot-tarakkara, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam,
Irin-jalakuda, Thrissur, Palakkad, Kozhikode, Malappuram and Kannur. Students
of standards XI and XII and a few “exceptionally talented" students of
Standard X are eligible to take part in the Olympiad, which is conducted by the
National Board for Higher Mathematics (NBHM).
Syllabus
The
syllabus will roughly be of the Plus Two level. Thrust areas will be Geometry,
Number Theory, Algebra and Combinatorics. There is no prescribed syllabus,
but the questions will be challenging.
Nearly
20 students will be selected for the Indian National Mathematical Olympiad,
which will be held on the campus of Cochin University of Science and Technology
(Cusat) in February 2014.
Some
30 national-level toppers and award winners will be invited for a training camp
to select an Indian team for the International Mathematical Olympiad 2014 to
be held in South Africa.
Application
There
is no prescribed application form.
Principals
of recognised schools should forward by October 15 lists of participants,
including details such as their names, class, residential address, phone
numbers, e-mail and the centre, along with a registration fee of Rs. 50 each by
demand draft (drawn in favour of Regional Coordinator, INMO payable at SBT
Cusat campus branch).
Prizes
on offer to the best performers include five cash prizes of Rs. 5,000 each sponsored
by the Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment, five
"Professor C.S. Venkatara-man Memorial Prizes" and many gifts. All
students selected for the National Olympiad will be awarded merit
certificates and be eligible for scholarships offered by the NBHM for higher
studies.
