NOTIFICATION
Ph.D. Registration July 2014
Applications
are invited from eligible candidates for registration for research leading to
Ph.D. Degree of this University as per the “Revised Regulations for Ph.D.
Registration and Award of the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy 2010/2012’’. The
PhD programmes is conducted by the university teaching departments, inter-university / inter- school centres*
and approved research centres of the university.
1. Eligibility for registration
Candidates
who have passed the Post-graduate Examination in any discipline of Mahatma Gandhi
University or of other Universities recognized as equivalent thereto securing
not less than 55% marks in the aggregate and have passed the Written Aptitude
Test (WAT) conducted by the University in May 2014 are eligible to apply for
registration for Ph.D. Those candidates who have passed the WAT 2014, but not
qualified the PG with the required percentage of marks on or before 31, July
2014 are not eligible to apply.
For SC/ST candidates, the minimum marks required
for registration is 50% in the aggregate in the Post graduate Examination.
MBBS, BAMS, BHMS and BDS degree holders who have
secured not less than 50% marks for their final examinations are also eligible
to apply for registration for Ph.D.
CA qualified candidates, that is, persons whose
names have been entered as members in the Register maintained either by the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of India or by the Institute of Cost and
Work Accountants of India are also eligible to apply for PhD registration.
The application should be accompanied by letter of
agreement from the Head of the Research Centre (The College Principal in the
case of an affiliated college centre) where the applicant proposes to do
research and letter of consent from the supervising teacher, who has sufficient
vacancy.
The application should also be accompanied by three
copies of the Research proposal in A4 size paper and in the following format :-
1)Title of research work, Research Area, Discipline, Name and address of the
candidate, Supervising teacher and research centre (All these details should be
on the facing page super scribed as RESEARCH PROPOSAL ) 2)Introduction
including related studies 3) Importance / Rationale of the study 4)
Objectives/Hypothesis 5) methodology including methods, sample and design of
work 6)Tentative work schedule ( Year wise)
7) Bibliography/References. The number of papers of
the research proposal shall not exceed five pages. The supervising teacher
should sign on the first and last page of the research proposal. Applicants of foreign nationality will be
considered for registration only if they are on visas issued for research
scholars/students and with the necessary clearance from the Government of India.
2. Mode of Admission
Admission to the Ph.D. programmes of those who have
passed written aptitude Test 2014 will be made on the basis of (a) marks of the
qualifying degree (b) marks of the WAT and (c) the interview d) letter of
consent of the supervising teacher showing vacancy position e) Letter of agreement
of the head of the research centre.
3. EXEMPTION FROM WRITTEN APTITUDE TEST
The following categories of candidates are exempted
from passing Written Aptitude test.
a. Candidates who hold a valid certificate having
qualified the Ph.D. entrance test (GAT) conducted before July 2010 by Mahatma
Gandhi University. (Validity of the certificate is for 5 years from the date of
issue).
b. Candidates who have become qualified in the
JRF/NET/SLET/GATE/GPAT or other Tests conducted by such Government bodies such
as UGC, CSIR, ICAR and ICMR/KSCST/INSPIRE.
c. Candidates who have M.Phil and M.Tech (all
disciplines), MD (Medicine) and MS(Medicine) in the subject of research
concerned.
d. Regular and permanent teachers of the Government
and aided colleges affiliated to the universities in Kerala and teachers of the
University Departments.
e. Scientists from Accredited R&D Institutions.
In the case of candidates having test exemption the
admission will be on the basis of (a) the marks of the qualifying degree (b)
the interview c) letter of consent showing vacancy position of the supervising
teacher d) Letter of agreement of the head of the research centre.
4. REGISTRATION FEE
The prescribed fee for PhD Registration is Rs.
750/- and the cost of the application is Rs. 25/-
The fee can be remitted at M.G.University Cash
Counter /Friends ( Janasevana Kedram) / SBT branches through M.G.University pay
in slip. DD is not accepted.
5. Registration for Research
All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. programme of
the University will be initially granted provisional registration as full time
research scholars.
Regular and permanent teachers of the Government
/Aided colleges of the State and Mahatma Gandhi University teaching
departments, will be granted provisional part time registration initially, if
they so desire.
Candidates admitted to Ph.D. programme shall join
the research centre immediately and their date of registration shall be deemed
to be the date of joining the next coursework succeeding registration ie. from
1st January of every year. However in the case of JRF candidates the date of registration
is the date of the order itself.
6. Course work
Students admitted to Ph.D. programme are required
to undertake course work comprising 3 Papers (Course a, Course b and Course c)
for a period of one semester.
The permanent teachers of the Government/Aided
colleges of the State and teachers of Mahatma Gandhi University departments can
pursue course work programme in two spells of three months each (April, May,
and June of every year). The course work shall not however exceed the first two
years.
All the candidates are required to qualify the
course work examination at the end of the course work programme for the
confirmation of the provisional registration.
7. Place of Research
Research shall be carried out by a Research scholar
in a University department/Inter University/ Inter- school centres/Research
Centre in an affiliated college/an institution recognised as a Research Centre.
8. Part-time Research
The following categories are eligible to apply for
conversion of their research to part time on successful completion of the
course work.
(a) Regular employees working in
Government/Quasi-government institutions.
(b) Teachers working in Government and Aided
educational institutions in the state
(c) Teachers working in the Institutions run by the
University
(d) Scientists working in accredited R&D
institutions and Clinical Psychologists attached to Government/Quasi-government
organizations.
(e) Contract lecturers who are employed in the
regular Departments of Mahatma Gandhi University, if the contract period is not
less than one year
(f) Teachers from unaided colleges affiliated to
Mahatma Gandhi University with a minimum two years of service.
9. Period of Research
(i) The minimum period of research will be 2 ½
years (inclusive of course work) for M.Phil, M.Ed., M.Sc (by research), Master
of Letters, M.Tech. and MD degree holders, if the research is in the subject in
which the candidate has taken the above qualifying degree.
In all other cases, the minimum period of research
will be three years (Inclusive of course work).
(ii) The maximum period of research will be five
years for full time and eight years for part time research.
10. Restriction on Employment
A full time research scholar shall not engage
himself/herself in any other employment except in imparting instruction in an
honorary capacity on a topic which forms the subject matter of his research in
the institution where he is working.
11. SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION
The application can be downloaded* from 01.07.2014 to
31.7.2014. The filled in application with the following documents should be
sent to the Deputy registrar I (Academic), Mahatma Gandhi University,
Priyadarsini Hills, Kottayam 686 560.

JRF/NET/SLET/GATE/GPAT/KSCST/INSPIRE
7. NOC from the employer
8. Agreement*

10. Eligibility Certificate for those who have
taken PG/Mphil degree from other universities.
