National Entrance Screening Test-2012 (NEST-2012)


The National Entrance Screening Test-2012 (NEST-2012), for admission to the 5-year integrated MSc Programme in Basic Sciences ( Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics) at National Institute of Science Education and Research (NISER), Bhubaneswar and for the Integrated MSc in Physics, Chemistry, Life Sciences and Mathematics, at University of Mumbai - Department of Atomic Energy Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences (UM-DAE CBS) Mumbai for the Academic Session, 2012-13 will be held from 2 pm to 5 pm on May 27, 2012 (Sunday).

The examination will be held at Agartala (Code 01), Ahmedabad (02), Allahabad (03), Bangaluru (04), Berhampur (Odisha) (05), Bhopal (06), Bhubaneswar (07), Calicut (08), Chandigarh (09), Chennai (10), Dehradun (11), Delhi East (12), Delhi North (13), Delhi South (14), Guwahati (15), Hyderabad (16), Indore (17), Jaipur (18), Jammu (19), Kochi (20), Kolkata North (21), Kolkata South (22), Lucknow (23), Madurai (24), Mumbai (25), Nagpur (26), Patna (27), Pune (28), Raipur (29), Ranchi (30), Sambalpur (31), Simla (32), Silchar (33), Udaipur (34), Varanasi (35), Burdwan (W. B) (36), Vishakhapattanam (37).

Applicants of general category and those belonging to Other Backward Castes (OBC) must be born on or after 1st October 1987. There is a relaxation of 5 years for SC/ST/PD candidates.

Applicants should have secured at least 60% marks (or equivalent grade) in aggregate in Class XII (or equivalent) examination from any recognized Board in India. For Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) candidates and for Persons with Disability (PD), the minimum requirement is 55%. Students who have passed Class XII qualifying examination in 2010 or 2011 or who are appearing for the qualifying examination in 2012 are eligible to apply.

Where only Letter grade is given by the Board, a certificate from the Board specifying equivalent percentage marks will be required to be produced by the applicant. In the absence of such a certificate the decision of the respective Admissions Committee will be final.

The details of number of seats and their break-up as per statutory government norms have been listed in respective websites of NISER, http://www.niser.ac.in and at that of UM-DAE CBS, http://www.cbs.ac.in . The total number of seats is 60 at NISER and 35 at UM-DAE CBS.

Application fee: Application fee for appearing in NEST is Rs. 600/- for general category and OBC Male candidates. For SC/ST/PD candidates and female candidates the amount is Rs. 300/-. The application fee may be paid by Demand Draft from any bank, drawn in the name of ‘NEST’ payable at Mumbai. It can also be paid by Electronic Mail Transfer to NEST account as per the following details: Bank and Branch name-Bank of Baroda, Kalina Branch, Account Name and Number- NEST, 06720100017374 IFSC code : BARB0KALINA.

Application can be submitted on-line, by filling up the application form at http://www.nestexam.in or by procuring a paper application form for NEST examination by writing to Chief Coordinator, NEST-2012.

On-line application: On-line applications are preferred. For this, candidates need to have a valid e-mail address. Applicant should first visit NEST-2012 website and register. Confirmation of registration will be sent to the applicant by email. On receiving the confirmation email, he/she can begin filling up of the form which can be done even in more than one sitting. They should carefully read the instructions for filling of the form given at the web-site. The applicant should save the filled form and keep a print-out for their reference. Applicants will have to upload their passport-size photograph and signature and fill in details of Draft or Electronic Mail Transfer, at appropriate places. Application without these details will be treated as incomplete and will not be considered.

If the candidate is paying the fees by Demand Draft, he/she should write his/her name and application number on the back side of the Draft and send it with a photocopy of printed application form to Chief Coordinator, NEST-2012, UM-DAE CBS, Health Center Building, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Mumbai 400 098.

The Last date for completing on-line application, including payment of fees is March 13, 2012.

Off-line Applications: Offline Application can be obtained from ‘The Chief Coordinator, NEST-2012, UM-DAE CBS, Health Center Building, University of Mumbai, Kalina Campus, Mumbai 400 098’, till February 13, 2012 by sending a request for the same. Photocopied application forms will not be considered.
Applicants should carefully read the instructions accompanying the application form before filling the form. On filling up the form, he/she should paste passport size photograph at appropriate place and sign his/her name in the box provided and also fill in correct payment details.

The filled application along with the Draft must reach the Chief Coordinator latest by March 13, 2012. Applicant should write his/her name and application number on the reverse of the Draft.

Candidates should mark their first and second preferences for Examination Centres at appropriate place in the application form. Every effort will be made to allot a center of their choice. However, allotment of an examination center by the Chief Coordinator, NEST 2012 will be regarded as final and any request to change the center will not be entertained. The address of the center allotted to a candidate will be mentioned in NEST admit card.

Admit Cards: Admit cards will be mailed to candidate’s postal addresses from April 15, 2012. Candidates will have an option of downloading their admit cards from http://www.nestexam.in . This procedure is recommended for the candidates who have filled the application form on-line. In case Admit Card is not received by May 1, 2012, the applicant may write to Chief Coordinator, NEST-2012 by Speed post or by e-mail (email address: nest@niser.ac.in ). Admit card of such candidates may be mailed electronically if an email address of the candidate is provided.

Question paper pattern: Language of the question paper will be English only. The question paper will have five sections. The first section, which is compulsory for all candidates, will include general questions. The next four sections will have questions from (1) Biology (2) Chemistry (3) Mathematics and (4) Physics.
Candidates may opt to answer any three of these four sections. All sections carry equal marks. The questions will be aimed at testing the comprehension and analytical ability of the candidates. The questions will be of objective type with four answers given for each question. Some of the questions may have one or more correct answers. For these questions, candidates are expected to mark all the correct answers and none of the wrong answers. For such questions, marks will be awarded if all correct answers and no wrong answers are marked. There will be negative marking for wrong answers.

Syllabus: Syllabus for the entrance examination is given in Appendix II of the Information Brochure. The syllabus is basically same as CBSE syllabus of 12th standard. Detailed syllabi of Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics are given here. There is no specific syllabus for the General section. This section is expected to test the candidate’s familiarity with (and not a detailed understanding of) major historical milestones in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. The questions based on Mathematics up to 10th Standard will be included in this section. In addition, there will be questions on given passages to test candidate’s ability of comprehension and application.

NEST Result: Results of NEST examination will be announced on June 18, 2012 on NEST web site. Candidates can get their result at NEST website ( http://www.nestexam.in ) by entering their application number or admit card number.

Dates of counseling for NISER and CBS will be announced on their respective web pages and the candidates will also be informed by email and letter.

NISER: NISER established by the Department of Atomic Energy, offers 5 year Integrated M.Sc Programme in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical sciences. At present, NISER functions from the campus of Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar, which includes an excellent library. Degrees at NISER will be awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), a deemed-to-be University within the Department of Atomic Energy. There are 60 seats, including reserved seats for SC/ST/OBC candidates and persons with disability (PD) as per Government norms.

CBS: The Department of Atomic Energy, Government of India, has an autonomous Centre for Excellence in Basic Sciences in Mumbai. The Centre is located in the Vidyanagari campus of the University of Mumbai. CBS offers 5 year Integrated MSc Programme in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. The degrees at CBS are awarded by the 150-year old University of Mumbai. Tentatively, there are 35 seats this year with reservations as per government norms, including reservation for persons with disability (PD). Those admitted to CBS and NISER are eligible for INSPIRE fellowship of Department of Science & Technology, Government of India.

Eligibility:
Eligibility for admission to Biological Sciences is 60% marks in Masters in any branches of Biology, life sciences and bioinformatics. Student with masters in any branches of natural or computer sciences with interest in pursuing career in biology can also apply for the course.

For applying to Chemical Sciences, candidates have to possess 60% marks in MSc or equivalent degree in Chemistry, Physics, Applied Chemistry, Biochemistry, Material Science, any one of the subject. For admission to Mathematical Sciences 60% marks is needed in MSc or equivalent degree in Mathematics.

Apart from the above qualification, the candidates should have qualified the CSIR-NET/ GATE / NBHM or equivalent examination valid for the current year in the relevant area of research. UGC-CSIR JRF qualified candidates can avail the fellowship directly from UGC or CSIR, whereas, students selected for PhD program based on GATE scores, are eligible for fellowship from NISER.

UGC-CSIR or any other JRF qualified candidates have to avail the fellowship directly from UGC or CSIR or any other whereas, students selected for Ph.D. program based on GATE/ GPAT/ JEST or any other scores, are eligible for financial aid (Assistantship / Scholarship) from NISER, Bhubaneswar.

How To Apply:
The form can be obtained by post or in person from the Academic Section, NISER Bhubaneswar. In case of request by post, please enclose a self-addressed envelope (A4 size, 21 cm X 30 cm) affixed with postage stamps of Rs. 25/-.

Candidates intending to apply for more than one program should use separate application form for each program with appropriate enclosures.

NISER does not demand any entrance fee from the candidates who apply for Ph.D program.

Send only attested copies (By Gazette Officer) of all supporting documents (mark sheets, certificates, age proof, caste certificate, etc.)

Enclose two letters of reference.
