PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE COURSE IN MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT (PCCMHA)
COURSE TYPE: SELF-FINANCED, SHORT-TERM PROFESSIONAL COURSE
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: MINIMUM TWO YEARS OF UNIVERSITY EDUCATION
COURSE DURATION: 10 WEEKS
INTRODUCTION:
The increasing burden of mental health problems, although have seen a steady flow of policy interventions, the field of mental health care and prevention continues to reel under an overall deficit in meeting with our current demands. According to the government of Gujarat Mental Health care Policy, 2005, it is estimated that there are 2.8 million adults with common mental disorders at any point in time in Gujarat.
Among a number of factors that researchers and practitioners have come to point at for our gross under achievement in tackling the mental health situation, a persisting concern points towards lack of adequate training facilities in general and particular issues about inclusion and method of imparting skills.
Additionally, policy makers clearly point towards the urgent need to develop a network of such dedicated short-term professional training programmes with special emphasis for meeting mental health screening and assessment in primary health care set up besides being available for emergency service and care.
MENTAL HEALTH ASSESSMENT:
Mental health is a term used to describe either a level of cognitive or emotional wellbeing or an absence of a mental disorder. This includes an individual’s ability to enjoy life and achieve a balance between life activities and efforts to achieve psychological resilience.
Mental Health assessment gives the treating clinician an overall picture of how well a client feels emotionally and how well the person is able to think and remember (cognitive functioning) besides a systematic observation of any significantly perverse behaviour that is otherwise not explained in the light of client’s socio-cultural background and immediate life circumstances. Psychological assessment tools play a central role in aiding the clinician to reach at a diagnosis combining results from observation as well as case history.
