About the course

The Hyderabad Academy of Psychology (HAP) has been founded by Dr. Diana Monteiro as a training academy to bridge the gap between formal psychological education and practical application of psychology in everyday life. As the first endeavor, the HAP is engaged in the training of individuals to ensure that adequate training in practical skills, theoretical knowledge and supervision is provided to those who are engaged in the process of helping others.

Course Content

The course is designed to be equally distributed between theory and practical skills. To aid in the development of counselors, supervision by trained psychologists/counselors is provided to ensure all round development of counselors. Training in counseling is inadequate without practical application. Thus, in addition to classes twice per week, students of the course seeking practical experience will be placed at different sites (schools, colleges or clinics) and clinical supervision will be provided.

One half of the course will focus on theoretical content including but not limited to, the basics of psychology, human development, personality, abnormal behavior, theories of counseling and wellness perspectives. The other half will consist of practical skill training achieved through role-plays, experiential learning, practicum, lectures and demonstrations, and other learning techniques. Clinical supervision (one on one meeting) will be conducted once per week for those who are undergoing practicum training at different placement sites.

Course Director

Dr. Diana Monteiro is the Director of the Academy and has a passion for training counselors. She obtained her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Southern Mississippi, USA and worked as a licensed psychologist before returning to India in 2008. After 10 years of training and experience in USA, Dr. Monteiro currently practices at Fillings Psychological Services in Secunderabad, teaches psychology and provides clinical supervision to psychologists-in-training.  She has also conducted seminars and workshops on various psychology based topics locally and internationally.
