The IIFM stands in a position to meet the requirements of the changing scenario in the forestry, environment, development and allied sectors. It is constantly striving to update itself and accordingly respond to the needs of all concerned stakeholders. Given the emerging, and much-needed, emphasis on environmental sustainability, climate change, carbon trading, finance, corporate social environmental responsibility, biodiversity conservation and natural resource management, IIFM suitably modifies its focus, activity frame and course structure to successfully meet these needs. The origin of the institute can be traced to 1974, when the Government of
India (GOI), realizing the need for a managerial approach to the business
of forestry, accepted the recommendations of FAO and SIDA for the
establishment of an institute dedicated to forestry management. The vision was clear to equip the forestry sector with business management techniques, applied economics, feasibility studies, cost control and economics of timber harvesting. To achieve this end, SIDA was requested
to support a Business Administration Training Project.
Five years later, in 1979, the GOI signed an agreement with the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmadabad, to evolve the philosophy and raison d’être of the institute. In 1982, the institute was christened ‘Indian
Institute of Forest Management’. IIFM came into existence as an autonomous Institution of the Ministry of Environment and Forest, Govt. of India. Under the Memorandum of Association and Rules of the Society, the Minister, MoE&F is the President of the Society.
