Basics of Epidemiology and Biostatistics

Scope of the short course
This course is intended to train researchers/medical professionals in basics of Epidemiology and Biostatistics as applied to research in medical field. The idea of the short course is to introduce a number of basic concepts and techniques that would help participants get initiated into the fascinating world of epidemiology and biostatistics. 

Statistical softwares used in the analysis of data will be introduced.

Venue
The course will be held at the Community Medicine Lecture hall, 3rd floor, College building, Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute, Puducherry – 605009

Course Duration: 15-16 September 2012 (9 AM to 4 PM)

Course Fee: Rs 1000. Payment should be made in full by cash or Demand Draft (DD) by 4 September 2012.
Those paying by cash should hand over the course fees to the office of Dept. of Community Medicine. DD should be in favour of “Finance Officer, IGMC&RI, Puducherry” payable at Puducherry and posted to the contact address mentioned in the brochure. Receipt for course fee will be handed over to the participants at the end of the course along with the certificate.

Who can apply?
Faculty; and post graduate students pursuing MD/MS/MDS/DNB/PhD

How to apply?
Please fill the attached application form and submit the same along with the course fee (cash/DD). The filled application and course fee should reach the office of Dept of Community Medicine, on or before 4 September 2012.

Study Material
Participants will be provided with study material. They are requested to bring their laptops for the course.

Note:
Last date for application is 4 September 2012. Once registered for the course, the fee will not be refunded. The number of participants for the course is limited to 20 and admission will be purely on first come first serve basis. Certificate and receipt for course fee would be provided at the end of the course.
Participants are requested to make their own arrangement for accommodation, breakfast and dinner

Course Content
The course will be divided into eight sessions. Detailed course schedule will be emailed to the final list of participants one week before the workshop.

Day 1 (15/9/12)

Session 1: Overview of study designs
This session is to enable the participant to confidently identify and comment on the choice of the type of study design used when they go through original articles in journals.

Session 2: Basics in epidemiology
At the end of this session participants will be able to clearly define the following concepts commonly encountered in epidemiologic studies- type 1, type 2 error, power of a study, effect size, one/two sided tests, confidence interval, internal validity, external validity and design effect.

Session 3: Sample size
At the end of this session participants would be able to understand the need for adequate and representative sample to conduct a study. Calculation of sample size for various study designs would be discussed.

Session 4: Hands on

Day 2 (16/9/12)

Session 5: Random sampling and randomization
Once sample size is decided, how to select the sample so that it is representative of the study population? This concept of random sampling will be covered. The process of randomization: dividing the study participants into study and control group(s), will also be covered in this session.

Session 6: Bias, Confounding and Chance
Is the result obtained truly an association? Is this association causal? These concepts would be covered in session 6.

Session 7: Common Statistical tests and introduction to Softwares for analysis

Session 8: Hands on Resource persons will be from Dept of Community Medicine, IGMCRI Puducherry and Dept of Community Medicine, PGIMER Chandigarh.
