1. Post-Graduate Diploma in Groundwater Resource Evaluation
2013 - 2014 :
India is a vast Country having diversified
geologically, climatologically and topographic set-up, giving rise to divergent
groundwater situations in different parts of the Country. The prevalent rock
formations ranging in age from Archaean to Recent, which control the occurrence
and movement of groundwater, are widely varied in composition and structure
throughout the Country. Similarly, not too insignificant, are the variations of
landforms from the rugged mountainous terrains of the Himalayas, Eastern and
Western Ghats to the Flat Alluvial Plains of the River Valleys and Coastal
tracts, and the Aeolian deserts of Rajasthan. The rainfall pattern too shows
region-wise variation and the topography and rainfall virtually control runoff
and groundwater recharge. Almost the entire Peninsular India is occupied by a
variety of hard and fissured formations, including crystalline, Trap basalt and
consolidated sedimentary rocks with patches of semi-consolidated sediments in
narrow intra-cratonic basins.
The climatic conditions of India are unique in the
sense that the Country has distinct rainy season. It is
estimated that the annual rainfall in India is
about 400 Million Hectare meter. Although there is plenty of water but still
many areas in the Country remain drought prone due to improper planning of
water conservation practices. In several parts of the Country groundwater
levels are perilously low including Andhra Pradesh.
Most parts of the State of Andhra Pradesh and
especially the parts of Telangana Region is drought prone and irrigation
projects are unable to meet the requirements of the agriculture requirements,
hence, the farmer is more depended on the groundwater. During the last ten
years dependency on groundwater and over exploitation of groundwater has led to
drastic changes in water levels in the State. Keeping in mind the scarcity of
available water resources, it has become imperative on the part of water
Scientists and Planners to adopt techniques for quantifying the available water
resources for Sustainable Development.
The P.G. Diploma in Groundwater Resource Evaluation
is one of its kind being offered by the Department of Geology, Osmania University.
The purpose of this course is to provide in-depth knowledge in hydrogeology with
emphasis on groundwater, groundwater-surface water interactions, geologic
controls, water chemistry, field investigations, and environmental
problems. At the end of this course the candidate is expected to locate
groundwater resources and evaluate qualitatively and quantitatively. The
candidate is expected to know and should:-
· know, understand, and master fundamental
qualitative and quantitative principles of hydrogeology
· know how to approach and solve basic problems in
field hydrogeology using latest techniques
· know locations of hydrogeologic data and how to
use them in hydrologic investigations, especially
groundwater exploration
· understand how hydrogeology is interrelated with
other natural and environmental science disciplines
Core syllabus of Post–Graduate Diploma in
Groundwater water Resource Evaluation includes; Hydrology;
Groundwater Hydraulics; Groundwater Exploration;
Hydrogeomorphology; Remote Sensing & GIS Modeling;
Hydro geochemistry & Watershed Management. The
Course will also contain project work with field
component on a micro-watershed basis.
