Institute of Physics, Bhubaneswar is an autonomous research institution funded by the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), Government of India. The research activity in the Institute centers around the areas of theoretical and experimental condensed matter physics, nuclear physics, and high energy physics.
One of the important objectives of the Institute has been to train and guide young scholars for research in physics. For this, the Institute has regular one year Pre-doctoral (post M.Sc.) course work and Doctoral research program for those who successfully complete the Pre-Doctoral course. The Institute campus has hostels for the Pre-doctoral and the Doctoral scholars.
The Institute of Physics invites application for the Pre-doctoral Program from Indian nationals having the following qualifications:
M.Sc. Physics with minimum 55% marks (in aggregate).
(A) GATE qualifiers with minimum score of 95 percentile and having current validity OR CSIR / UGC- NET qualifiers (for research fellowship) within last one year.
Candidates who have qualified JEST-2010 with a minimum score of 95 Percentile need not send any application. They will be contacted directly by the Institute. If a candidate has scored less than 95 percentile in JEST-2010 but satisfies any of the criteria for GATE/NET as above, he/she should also send the application.
Candidates appearing for the final semester/year of M.Sc., who have already qualified in GATE or CSIR/UGC-NET can also apply. They should submit the relevant proof before joining the pre-doctoral programme. In case of non-availability of the M.Sc. results at the time of joining, the admission will be treated as provisional.
Application in prescribed format (given below), should be sent only by E-mail as DOC or PDF file latest by 20th April, 2010 to admit@iopb.res.in.

Admission Procedure
All eligible candidates, whether through JEST-2010 or through application against this advertisement, will have to appear for a short written test on the morning of 3rd May, 2010. Result of the written test will be published on the same day and short-listed candidates will have to appear for a personal interview between May 03–05, 2010. Final merit list will be prepared based on the scores of both the written test and the interview.
