Training on Disaster Mangerment

Geological Survey of India Training Institute (GSI), Hyderabad has invited applications for admission to sixth training course on "Application of Geoinformatics for Disaster Management" for four weeks from 27th June 2011 to 27th July 2011 at Hyderabad to be conducted in collaboration with ISRO.

The course will cover three modules viz:
(i) fundamentals of Remote Sensing,
(ii) Introduction to GIS and
(iii) Application of geoinformatics in disaster management.

The course content includes:
• Overview of environmental and natural disasters: causative factors, manifestations, analysis
• Study of various environmental disasters – recognition, mapping, zonation etc.; landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis,
cyclones, floods, mining hazards, soil and forest disasters
• Application of Remote sensing in disaster management
• Application of Geoinformatics in disaster management – Generation of DEM from aerial photographs, CARTOSAT
and SAR data
• Disaster management – mitigation measures, prioritization etc
• Case studies on individual disasters like landslides, earthquakes, tsunamis, cyclones, floods, mining hazards and drought
• Project work

The Course is targeted for faculty of different universities/colleges , geoscientists of State / Central govt. organizations, State Remote Sensing Centers, Institutes of disaster management, faculty of Administrative Staff Colleges and University, Officers of Border Security Force/ paramilitary organizations.

The candidate should be postgraduate in Geology/Geography/Geoinformatics/Environmental Science or graduates in Civil Engineering / Environmental Engineering or equivalent degree in the relevant field. Candidates who are familiar with using Remote Sensing & GIS techniques will be preferred.

There is no course fee. Limited fellowships, to the extent of covering Sleeper class return fare and living expenses in Training Institute Hostel, are available. Hostel facility is available in the GSI campus.
