The date of application for M.A. and M.Phil Courses in the Department of Anthropology under the School of Social Sciences of Kannur University has been extended up to 2 July 2011.
The Department of Anthropology was established in 1986, under Calicut University and the M.A. Anthropology Programme was started in 1988. The Department was transferred to Kannur University in 1996. M.A. Anthropology Programme was brought under the Semester System in 2000, and under the Credit Semester System (CSS) in 2006. Starting from 2010, it has been under the Choice-based Credit Semester System (CCSS). Twenty one batches of students have passed out from the Department so far, and the twenty second batch is just passing out, and a majority of them have been well placed in various government departments, academic and research institutes and non-government organisations within and outside the state. Anthropology has been introduced as one of the combinations under Humanities at the Higher Secondary level since 2000.
The M.A. Programme in Anthropology exposes the students to its different branches such as Social and Cultural Anthropology, Biological Anthropology and Archaeological Anthropology as well as to the peoples and cultures of India, and to the Anthropological Methodology and Theoretical Perspectives. Supervised Fieldwork for one full month, residing in a Tribal/rural area is an essential component of the programme. Study tour involving Archaeological Field Visits, Community Visits and Institutional and Museum Visits also form part of the programme. The programme also offers specialized courses such as development anthropology, ecological anthropology and medical anthropology, thus facilitating the students to take up specializations in the respective fields.
The students in the Department are also exposed to multi-disciplinary perspectives by exposing them to scholarly presentations through the Department Research Forum, by experts from within and abroad. The UGC Special Assistance Programme, implemented by the Department since 2007, the only teaching Department to earn this credit under Kannur University, provides further opportunities for listening to scholars of international repute and for participating in National Seminars.
The Department seeks to provide a student-friendly atmosphere to develop well-groomed anthropologist with a humanistic perspective. The Department intends to transform the students into well-integrated and holistic personalities with a socially inclined and critical outlook and a relativist perspective that fits a professional anthropologist. For this, the pedagogy adopted would be based on a learner-centred approach involving lectures, group discussions, debates, seminars, assignment, field exposure, and social interaction.
The Department has a well-equipped and growing Laboratory to expose the students with biological anthropology techniques including Anthropometry, Craniometry, Somatometry and Somatoscopy. The Laboratory is also equipped with stone tools and artefacts to carry out practicals in Archaeological Anthropology. The Department of Anthropology has a small and well-maintained Museum with a good number of collections of artefacts and specimens, as well as of material and cultural objects associated with different economic and social niches. The department has a rich library containing more than 2800 books and monographs on a wide range of anthropological topics.
The Department also offers Ph.D programme and so far, about eight candidates have obtained Doctoral degree in Anthropology through the Department and presently about twelve other candidates have been pursuing their doctoral research on various topics of anthropological significance.
Anthropology would be the right choice for those candidates who want to explore and develop a holistic understanding of human existence, society, culture and communities across space and time
